PARIS, Nov 5 (Reuters) - France's far-right Rassemblement National (RN) elected Jordan Bardella as its new president on Saturday, overwhelmingly backing the 27-year-old European Parliament member to succeed Marine Le Pen in the post. It is the first time the party will be led by someone who is not a member of the Le Pen family. I will we there where the country needs me," Le Pen told Saturday's party convention. Bardella, who hails from a tough working-class neighbourhood, has said he will continue her efforts to attract voters beyond the party's far-right core. Bardella has become one of Le Pen's most recognised lieutenants in French media.
Florida's first lady, Casey DeSantis, is a close confidant to her powerful husband, several people told Insider. He added, "We would not see Ron DeSantis outside of press conferences if he did not have a wife and kids." Ron DeSantis began clawing his way into the national spotlight in 2017 as a member of the US House of Representatives. She smiled wryly and said: "Everyone knows my husband, Ron DeSantis, is endorsed by President Trump, but he's also an amazing dad. "Ron DeSantis would be a very good candidate for the St. Johns county commission if he did not have Casey DeSantis in his life," Schorsch said.

LONDON, Nov 2 (Reuters) - French battery startup Verkor has raised 250 million euros ($248 million) from investors to fund a battery "megafactory" on its way to building a much larger plant to produce batteries for its customer Renault (RENA.PA), the company said on Wednesday. Verkor, which is based in Grenoble, said investors in the funding round included French bank Societe Generale (SOGN.PA), German industrial company Siemens (SIEGn.DE) and the European Investment Bank, which put in 49 million euros. The funding round comes after the company raised 100 million euros from investors in 2021. Verkor said that so far the company has been making several batteries a day in its lab in Grenoble. As well as perfecting its battery chemistry, the megafactory will help Verkor master production at scale and train people to eventually run the Dunkirk gigafactory, Lemaignan said.

Kittredge began making more, and in the early 1970s founded Yankee Candle Company. By the late 1990s, Yankee Candle had become the biggest scented candle company in the county. With the flood of cash and a non-compete clause that prevented him from launching another candle company for years, Kittredge built his dream life.

CHISINAU, Oct 31 (Reuters) - Moldova declared a Russian embassy employee in the capital Chisinau persona non grata on Monday, and Russian news agencies quoted Moscow as saying it would respond to the decision. The Moldovan Foreign Ministry did not identify the employee in a statement issued after the Russian ambassador was summoned and informed that the employee must leave Moldova. Moldova, a former Soviet republic that is dependent on Russian energy supplies but has said it wants to join the European Union, said earlier on Monday that missile debris had landed in a Moldovan village after a Russian attack on Ukraine. "It is emphasised that attacks on the Ukrainian energy infrastructure also create increasing threats to the energy security of Moldova," it said. Russian news agencies quoted the Russian Foreign Ministry as saying Moscow would respond to Moldova's move but gave no further details.
Numbers don’t lie (Madonna is one of the bestselling pop stars of all time), but they don’t often tell the whole story. Without question, I view Madonna as someone who pushed the boundaries of overtly and unabashedly sexual performances in popular culture. But Black artists often get excised from predominating narratives about U.S. popular culture. But Black artists often get excised from predominating narratives about U.S. popular culture. The risks were much higher for the Black women and the Black and Latinx queer people across genders who chose to be sexually provocative entertainers.
WASHINGTON, Oct 28 (Reuters) - The United States on Friday imposed sanctions on an Iranian foundation it accused of issuing a multi-million dollar bounty for the killing of novelist Salman Rushdie, who was attacked at an event in August. Rushdie, 75, lost sight in one eye and the use of one hand following an attack on stage at a literary event in western New York in August, his agent said. Friday's action freezes any U.S. assets belonging to the foundation and generally bars Americans from dealing with it. Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, then Iran's supreme leader, 33 years ago issued a fatwa, or religious edict, calling on Muslims to assassinate Rushdie a few months after his novel "The Satanic Verses" was published. Rushdie, who was born in India to a Kashmiri Muslim family, has lived with a bounty on his head, and spent nine years in hiding under British police protection.
An Arkansas motorcyclist was engulfed in a "fireball" and is recuperating in the hospital after a state trooper deployed a Taser and it hit a gallon of gasoline in his backpack, authorities said. Christopher Gaylor, 38, was struck by the Taser after setting Arkansas troopers on a police chase after him in the early hours of Oct. 13 in Little Rock, state police said in a news release. A trooper tried to initiate a traffic stop, but Gaylor “refused to comply” and kept on driving, reaching speeds approaching 100 mph and ignoring traffic stop signs and lights along the way, state police said. Arkansas State PoliceGaylor eventually made his way toward Interstate 30 and jumped from the motorcycle at a residence along Chandler Street in North Little Rock and fled on foot with troopers following behind. One trooper then deployed his Taser to stop Gaylor.
ATLANTA — A federal jury on Wednesday returned a guilty verdict on six of seven charges against a suspended Georgia sheriff accused of violating the constitutional rights of people in his custody by unnecessarily strapping them into restraint chairs. Prosecutors said Victor Hill, who was suspended as Clayton County sheriff after his indictment last year, had detainees strapped into restraint chairs for hours even though they posed no threat and complied with deputies’ instructions. The use of the chairs was unnecessary, was improperly used as punishment and caused pain and bodily injury in violation of the civil rights of seven men, prosecutors argued. Defense attorneys asserted that Hill used the restraint chair legally to maintain order at the jail and didn’t overstep his lawful authority. Their verdict — guilty of violating the civil rights of six of the seven detainees — came Wednesday afternoon, news outlets reported.
Justice Samuel Alito once told the late Sen. Ted Kennedy that he respected Roe v. Wade's precedent. The NY Times previewed portions of Kennedy's journal in "Ted Kennedy: A Life" by John A. Farrell. Despite assurances from Alito, Kennedy was unconvinced and voted against his confirmation. The June decision overturned Roe v. Wade and made clear that Alito had long been a critic of the case. Long-held precedent, Alito wrote "does not compel unending adherence to Roe's abuse of judicial authorities.

“I think it’s going to be significant,” Chuck Coughlin, an Arizona Republican pollster, said of the third-party impact on key Senate races. Angela McArdle, the chair of the Libertarian National Committee, said it’s not her party's job to protect Republican candidates who are alienating voters. "If Republicans fear that Libertarians are going to be spoilers, Republicans need to run more liberty-minded candidates," McArdle told NBC News. Much attention has been paid to the level of support third-party candidates can wrestle from the major party contenders in recent election cycles, particularly on the presidential level. "We have to wait to see the melt on these third-party candidates," he said.
The jury in Kevin Spacey's sexual abuse trial found that the Oscar-winning actor is not liable for battery against “Star Trek: Discovery star” Anthony Rapp. Rapp alleged that Spacey climbed on top of him at a party in New York City in 1986, when Rapp was 14 and Spacey was 26. “I didn’t ask for him to do that,” he told jurors, referring to Spacey’s alleged sexual advance. Rapp alleged that sometime after that evening, Spacey invited him to a party at his apartment. Rapp testified that he did not recognize anyone at the party, so he went into a bedroom to watch television.

Companies Electricite de France SA FollowPARIS, Oct 18 (Reuters) - Strikes have affected 11 French nuclear power plants, an FNME-CGT power union representative said on Tuesday, delaying maintenance at 17 different reactors. Power production was also reduced by 1.8 gigawatts (GW) at three other nuclear reactors, data from operator EDF (EDF.PA) showed. Members of FNME-CGT have been staging rolling strikes at French nuclear power plants for several weeks over wages, heightening the risk of power supply shortages as the French utility struggles to get enough reactors back online for winter. Maintenance operations are continuing on the reactors that are currently shutdown despite the strikes, an EDF spokesperson said on Monday. The strike is part of a general strike on Tuesday that has affected train traffic, schools and other sectors.

After being the longest-serving health secretary in British history and stints running the foreign office and culture ministry, Hunt returns from government exile after two failed bids to become Britain's prime minister himself. "The appointment of Jeremy Hunt as Chancellor is a wise choice," Conservative lawmaker Bernard Jenkin said on Twitter. Ironically, though, while Truss has said she will press ahead with a cut to income tax, Hunt said at the time that could wait. Other critics said some of the problems that the state-run health service faced were a consequence of his role as health minister. During a trip to China in July in 2018, he mistakenly described his wife Lucia, who hails from China, as being Japanese.

Penny Smart is a personal trainer who owns a gym on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, New York. The current location of Dakota Personal Training and Pilates, which is my third gym, is very near Central Park on the Upper West Side. Number two would be to start at a commercial gym because that's where you could gain experience and get referrals. I'd only been on staff as a trainer for one year at a commercial gym before I became an independent trainer. From that point on I rented space at the training gym that I eventually bought from the owner.
Law enforcement in Ohio was aware of the case, Trick added, and they had to go to Indianapolis to retrieve tissue to be tested as part of a sexual assault investigation. In a prior statement regarding the initial lawsuit, Yost disagreed that the right to an abortion is protected under state law. “Aside from filing the wrong action in the wrong court, they are wrong as well on Ohio law. Abortion is not in the Ohio Constitution.”In the wake of the overturning of Roe, 13 states have put laws in place restricting most abortions. “Many patients broke down in tears in our office,” Sharon Liner, the medical director of Planned Parenthood Southwest Ohio, said in the affidavit.
At New York Fashion Week, veteran designer Vivienne Tam showcased a metaverse-themed collection featuring various NFT characters. Kerry Chrapliwy — CEO of a marketing agency representing Gemini, a cryptocurrency exchange platform that co-sponsored the show — said web3 world has a reputation for being geeky, insular, and male, which needs to change. A divide became clear, though, despite the overlap between the fashion world and the NFT world — like being environmentally disastrous and needing disposable income to participate — their communities do not easily merge, even in a space dedicated to facilitating just that. They didn't seem to know about the NFT element of Tam's collection, didn't care, or both. Their jobs involve a combination of working with the clothes, with models, and in the case of this collection, with people in the NFT world.

The welfare funds in question were part of the $86 million Mississippi is given each year by the federal government to lift families out of poverty. The state auditor uncovered $77 million in misspent welfare funds in February 2020. The text messages, which were part of a filing by New's attorney, do not establish that Favre knew the public funds discussed were welfare money. The newly released text messages indicate Bryant, a Republican, was much more involved in the project as governor than previously known. She would pay Favre $1.1 million in state funds directly and he would do a few radio ads.
