Businesses could cite their rising costs to justify price increases, leading to higher revenues that went toward higher wages for workers. There have been some promising signs: Big Japanese firms like Toyota have reported large profits and pledged the biggest wage increases for workers in decades. In March, the Bank of Japan raised its policy rate for the first time in 17 years, concluding that the economy had achieved the “virtuous cycle” between wages and prices it had envisioned.

Federal prosecutors have criminally charged the well-known short seller and analyst Andrew Left with securities fraud related to allegedly using his public platform to illegally profit to the tune of at least $16 million from manipulating stock market activity contrary to positions he presented to the public from 2018 through 2023. The indictment notes that Left is a frequent guest commentator on CNBC and other business cable news channels. Prosecutors said that Left used Citron's online platform to comment on publicly traded companies and claim that their stock was incorrectly valued by the market. Left, who previously lived in Beverly Hills, California, is charged in the indictment with one count of engaging in a securities fraud scheme, 17 counts of securities fraud, and one count of making false statements to federal investigators. If convicted, he would face a maximum possible sentence of 25 years in prison for the securities fraud scheme alone.

Bigger, more charismatic species like elephants and tigers usually come to mind when the illicit animal trade is mentioned. But a study published this month has revealed a flourishing black market in stuffed and mounted bats that, until now, has gone largely unnoticed. In the United States, especially, bats are openly sold, intact or as skeletons, on e-commerce sites like Etsy, eBay and Amazon. “Instead, they could be inadvertently supporting the population decline of this bat species in the wild.”

If the prospect of sharks lurking just off the beach wasn’t frightening enough, researchers in Brazil have discovered a new reason to be unnerved: Some of them have cocaine in their system. In a study published last week, researchers tested 13 sharks off the coast of Rio de Janeiro and found that all had traces of cocaine in their liver and muscle tissues. The levels of cocaine found in these sharks were reported to be as much as 100 times higher than in previously observed marine life. It’s the first time this data has ever been found for any top predator.”This was the first study to analyze cocaine in sharks, following various studies on smaller species, including mollusks, crustaceans and even eels. All 13 sharks examined were found to have unfiltered cocaine in much higher concentrations than in previous studies on other animals, indicating chronic exposure to the drug.
