Multibillion-dollar EV battery plants — and their thousands of expected workers — are crucial to the automotive industry's future and uniquely positioned to have wide-ranging implications for the UAW, automakers and President Joe Biden's push toward domestic manufacturing. But UAW leadership has made it a priority to ensure a "just transition" to EVs for auto workers, including the battery plants. Michael Wayland / CNBCEither side could use the battery plants as indirect leverage in the negotiations, according to current and past negotiators from both sides of the table. At GM's Ultium battery plant in Ohio, workers make between $16 and $22 an hour with full benefits, incentives and tuition assistance. Setting a standardThe UAW last week released a white paper detailing some reported safety issues and concerns at the Ultium plant.

Tesla is one of the few companies that make money on electric vehicles, and it dominates the U.S. and European electric car markets. As a result, the company is in a stronger position than other automakers who are losing billions of dollars on electric cars. The Cybertruck will be Tesla’s first new passenger model since the Model Y went on sale in 2020. Unlike the Model Y, a sport utility vehicle that had scant competition when it went on sale, the Cybertruck enters a crowded field. Ford Motor offers an electric pickup, the F-150 Lightning, as does Rivian, a fledgling carmaker that sells an electric pickup called the R1T.

Days later, Ford announced price cuts to its F-150 Lightning electric pickup by up to $10,000. Both signal that the world of electric pickup trucks is heating up. Ford said Monday morning it would slash the prices of its F-150 Lightning electric pickup trucks by up to nearly $10,000 just days after Tesla's rival Cybertruck finally rolled off the assembly line. The cheapest electric F-150 dropped nearly $10,000, from $59,974 to $49,995, while the most expensive trim option fell about $6,000, from $98,074 to $91,995. Ford raised Lightning prices several times over the past year.

Ford Motor on Monday reduced prices of its F-150 Lightning electric pickup truck by between $6,000 and nearly $10,000, the latest sign of sluggish demand for electric vehicles. The price cuts come as inventories of unsold electric vehicles are rising on dealer lots, and follow several rounds of discounting by Tesla, the dominant seller of electric cars. Ford is lowering prices after it temporarily halted production of the truck this year to upgrade its assembly line and increase output. By the fall, the company expects its Rouge Electric Vehicle Center near Detroit to be able to churn out 150,000 Lightnings a year, triple its current production capacity. Competition in the electric vehicle business is growing more intense.

LANSING, Mich. – General Motors on Monday revealed a redesigned version of its popular Chevrolet Traverse crossover with a more truck-like appearance that the company hopes will attract new buyers. The 2024 Chevy Traverse's exterior features a more sculptured design than the smoother outgoing model. Through the first half of this year, the larger crossover trailed only the automaker's full-size pickups, Chevy Malibu sedan and smaller Chevrolet Equinox crossover in sales. "Our new Traverse is designed and engineered to act and look more like an SUV," said Chevrolet Vice President Scott Bell in a release. "Led by the all-new Z71, the 2024 Traverse builds on the success of its predecessor and will undoubtedly enable us to be in more customer driveways."

Suffolk County Sheriff's Office/APHeuermann is charged with three counts of first-degree murder for the killings of Melissa Barthelemy in 2009, and Megan Waterman and Amber Costello the following year, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney. His father had built satellites for a living, Heuermann told the interviewer. They first connected him to the killings last year while conducting a review of evidence under a newly formed task force, which included the Suffolk County Police Department, the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, the New York State Police and the FBI. Speaking of the arrest, Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison said Friday: “Rex Heuermann is a demon that walks among us.

To some people, electric vehicles are a better option because they can serve multiple functions. Another big advantage: The battery in an F-150 Lightning or the electric Chevrolet Silverado pickup, which is expected to go on sale this year, can store a lot more energy than home batteries that are sometimes installed with rooftop solar panels. Pair an electric truck with a home solar system, the thinking goes, and a family could keep the lights on for days or even weeks. The use of electric vehicles as a source of power has intrigued electric utility executives, including Pedro Pizarro, who heads the board of the Edison Electric Institute, the industry’s main trade organization, and is the chief executive of Edison International, which provides power to millions of homes and businesses in Southern California. Mr. Pizarro’s company and other utilities are testing whether it is practical and safe to send power from electric vehicles to the grid.

On Friday, details began emerging about Rex Heuermann, who was arrested and charged with murder in the killings of three of the women. Mr. Heuermann, 59, is a married white man who works as an architect in Manhattan and lives in Massapequa Park, about 15 miles from Gilgo Beach. He owned a Chevrolet Avalanche truck at the time of the killings, prosecutors said. None of this proves that Mr. Heuermann is the serial killer, and experts noted that profiles are typically used to evaluate individuals who have already come to the attention of investigators. But the similarities did not go unnoticed by some of the experts who put together the 2011 profile.

U.S. regulators will soon decide on a petition filed by General Motors ' Cruise self-driving technology unit seeking permission to deploy up to 2,500 self-driving vehicles annually without human controls, a top auto safety official said on Wednesday. The petition, filed in February 2022, seeks government approval to deploy vehicles annually without steering wheels, mirrors, turn signals or windshield wipers. National Highway Traffic Safety acting Administrator Ann Carlson said Wednesday the agency "will issue a decision "in the coming weeks." Cruise wants to deploy its Origin vehicle, which has subway-like doors and no steering wheels. The NHTSA said Cruise vehicles "may engage in inappropriately hard braking or become immobilized."

Why GM is sunsetting the classic Chevrolet Camaro

Fans like Mercado have helped keep the Camaro alive since it was introduced as a competitor to the Ford Mustang in 1966. That makes the Ford Mustang the last vehicle in the segment standing in its current gas-burning form. By that time it was lagging far behind competitors: The Ford Mustang sold 72,489 units in 2019, and the Challenger, 60,997. Sedans and smaller calls made up 43% of all vehicle sales in 2010. Tesla is the most American car brand

Last year, Tesla only claimed the two top spots. Tesla may not have ads featuring American icons like the Wild West, bald eagle, or stars-and-stripes galore, but it's still the most American car brand, at least based on its manufacturing. The survey takes five primary factors into account: final assembly location, origin of parts, origin of engines, origin of transmissions, and manufacturing workforce. To qualify for a $7,500 tax credit, new EVs and their batteries must be mostly assembled in the US — something that's benefitting Tesla greatly so far. Tesla is set to receive billions in other credits, too, thanks to its early investment in manufacturing stateside as other automakers race to catch up.

As electric vehicles enter the market, misconceptions abound regarding the cars and how automakers can remain profitable while ditching the internal combustion engine, says Mark Reuss, General Motors' president. Companies need hybrids to bridge the gap to full EVsSome automakers have been making the transition to electric lineups with a pit stop: hybrids. Toyota, for example, has invested in hybrids in addition to electric products and has faced skepticism from the industry as a result. "We're not going to dilute our investment with hybrids," Reuss said, adding that the automaker expects its EV business to be profitable by 2025. This should enable the automaker to reap tens of billions of dollars in additional profit, according to Reuters estimates, before it shifts completely to zero-emission electric vehicles in 2035. It never said when exactly it would stop producing gasoline-powered trucks and SUVs, though suppliers and analysts expected it would be well before 2035. GM plans to run its heavy-duty combustion pickups at both plants until 2035, according to AFS, which provides data and analysis to vehicle manufacturers and suppliers. The automaker will gradually reduce annual production of its big SUVs in Arlington as it begins to introduce new electric companions, starting around mid-decade. By 2030, AFS forecasts Arlington production could drop to around 200,000 vehicles, which could still produce at least $2 billion in pretax earnings.
