Dutch regulator disputes Apple's commissions in dating app case
  + stars: | 2023-10-31 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
An Apple logo hangs above the entrance to the Apple store on 5th Avenue in the Manhattan borough of New York City, July 21, 2015. Although the case is limited to dating apps in the Netherlands, it is seen as having potential to set a precedent for other markets. Apple did agreed to make changes to the app store including opening it to alternative forms of payment for dating apps in the Netherlands. In February 2022 Apple cut commissions for dating app makers in the Netherlands to 27% from 30%. "Apple ... harms dating app providers by charging them an additional, and inexplicably higher, fee for the same services" it does other types of app makers, it said in the document.

CNN —It was billed as the first ‘affordable’ long-term cruise for people who wanted to live onboard while sailing the world. But a week before the original departure date, passengers who’ve signed up with Life at Sea cruises are still waiting to find out when they will hit the high seas. The company says it will arrange new tickets for those with non-refundable fares, “once the new embarkation date and location have been officially determined.”However, the company is adamant that the cruise will still depart – albeit late. Passengers have previously expressed their concerns that the cruise might be indefinitely delayed, or even canceled.

London CNN —The UK has abandoned a cap on bankers’ bonuses, in its latest push to boost the competitiveness of London’s financial industry following Brexit. “A bonus cap is not routinely imposed in other leading international financial centers outside the EU,” the regulator added, noting that the cap had been identified as “a factor in limiting labor mobility.”The UK government has long been opposed to the cap and believes that lifting it will help shore up London’s position as an international financial hub. Brexit made access to Europe’s vast market for financial services more difficult and costly for UK-based banks, and London has lost some business to cities such as Paris, Frankfurt and Amsterdam. Britain’s financial regulators have since echoed these concerns and the PRA said Tuesday that scrapping the cap would better align pay with performance. The UK government has come under increasing pressure to deliver post-Brexit benefits for London, the center of Britain’s hugely important financial services sector.

AMSTERDAM, Oct 25 (Reuters) - Several Dutch lawmakers on Tuesday challenged the Netherlands' Trade Minister over whether the U.S. has acted correctly in unilaterally imposing new rules regulating the export to China of another chipmaking machine made by ASML Holding (ASML.AS). The U.S. last week announced new rules giving Washington the right to restrict the export of Veldhoven-headquartered ASML's Twinscan NXT1930Di machine if it contains any U.S. parts at all. The deep ultraviolet (DUV) lithography machine can be used to help make both relatively advanced computer chips as well as mid-range and older chips. The U.S. has pressured the Dutch government not to export any of its most advanced machines to China since 2019, and in June the Dutch government introduced its own licensing requirement for slightly less advanced machines. ASML dominates the market for lithography equipment, used by chipmakers such as TSMC (2330.TW), Samsung (005930.KS) and Intel (INTC.O) to help create the circuitry of chips.

AMSTERDAM, Oct 19 (Reuters) - Making more products for China locally and buying chips from several suppliers are just two of the supply chain changes Dutch healthcare technology firm Philips is making due to rising trade tensions, its CEO Roy Jakobs told Reuters. Philips' China business boomed before the pandemic, but that trend is slowing, Jakobs said. The rate of combinations ramped up in the 1990s as the city came out of an economic crisis. “I’m not trying to begrudge folks who are trying to build a larger apartment as their families grow,” said Adam Brodheim, a preservationist who did the research. “I’m trying to bring attention to the way these actions across the entire city make a meaningful impact on our housing crisis.”On some streets, many buildings that were built a century or more ago as single-family homes and split during the 1900s into multiple units have once again become single-family homes. In the rowhouses on West 88th Street between Amsterdam Avenue and Columbus Avenue, there are about 173 units. That compares with more than 400 units on the same street in the 1950s and 1960s, according to Mr. Brodheim, who is also a member of Open New York, a nonprofit that advocates for more development.

ASML warns of flat 2024 sales as chipmakers slow orders

The company reported net profit of 1.9 billion euros ($2.01 billion) for the three months ended Sept. 30, in line with analyst expectations. Net bookings were 2.6 billion euros, compared with third quarter sales of 6.7 billion euros. "Consensus expectations still call for 7% sales growth next year, which should come down today," Stifel analysts said in a note. Dassen said ASML still had an order backlog of 35 billion euros and a strong 2025 would follow an uncertain 2024, given its customers' expansion plans in Asia, the United States and Europe. Dassen said the company did not expect any financial impact from an updated U.S. policy announced Tuesday restricting sales of semiconductor equipment to China.

Reuters fact-checking unit has identified numerous cases of social media posts using fake images and information about the Israel-Hamas conflict, and others in which confusion rather than deliberate disinformation appears to have heightened tensions. loading* A video of Russian President Vladimir Putin speaking about Ukraine last year was shared this month with fabricated subtitles warning the U.S. not to interfere in the Israel-Hamas conflict.
