New York CNN —Sam Bankman-Fried, the alleged crypto grifter, is about to learn which of two profoundly divergent paths he’ll take on the road to trial. One path allows him to continue his house arrest in the comfort of his parents’ California home. If his bail is revoked, Bankman-Fried will be immediately remanded to a notorious federal detention center in Brooklyn. Bankman-Fried, who has pleaded not guilty to multiple conspiracy and fraud charges, is set to go to trial in October. But the company came unglued in the span of a week last November — as concerns about its financial ties to Bankman-Fried’s crypto hedge fund, Alameda Research, spurred investors and customers to yank their funds.

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File PhotoNEW YORK, Aug 4 (Reuters) - Coinbase Global (COIN.O) on Friday asked a judge to end the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's lawsuit accusing the world's largest publicly traded cryptocurrency exchange of violating federal securities laws. Coinbase was sued by the SEC in June, and accused of operating illegally as a national securities exchange, broker and clearing agency without registering with the regulator. Firms are closely watching the litigation between the SEC and Coinbase, with some onlookers deeming it an "existential" clash. Coinbase leaned on the recent Ripple matter in Friday's filing, noting the SEC's lawsuit hinges on the type of transactions that the judge deemed outside of the regulator's jurisdiction.

Allies of former President Donald J. Trump have rushed to his defense since he was charged on Tuesday in connection with his efforts to overturn the 2020 election. They inaccurately attacked the judge assigned to oversee the trial, baselessly speculated that the timing of the accusations was intended to obscure misconduct by the Bidens and misleadingly compared his conduct to that of Democratic politicians. What Was Said“Judge Chutkan was appointed to the D.C. District Court by Barack Obama, and she has a reputation for being far left, even by D.C. District Court standards. Mr. Cruz is correct that Judge Tanya S. Chutkan, the trial judge overseeing Mr. Trump’s prosecution in the case, was appointed by President Barack Obama. While she has gained a reputation for handing down tough sentences to people convicted of crimes in the Jan. 6 riot, she is not the only federal judge who has exceeded prosecutors’ sentencing recommendations.

For Biden, Trump’s third indictment is undoubtedly the most personal. The White House declined to comment on Trump’s indictment Tuesday, referring questions to the Department of Justice. The White House learned of the indictment through media reports, a White House official said, as was the case with past indictments. After Trump was indicted in June, Biden was repeatedly pressed for comment on the historic first federal indictment of a former president. Ahead of Trump’s indictment Tuesday, a Biden campaign official said the campaign once again did not intend to fundraise off a Trump indictment, determining that the risks of fundraising off the indictment – which would feed Republican attacks of a politicized prosecution – outweighed the potential benefits.

So far, however, having reservations about Mr. Trump’s alleged wrongdoing does not appear to be leading Republican voters to reconsider their support for him. Views of Mr. Trump have long been remarkably stable, and the public’s views of his potential criminality are no exception. About half of all voters say they think he has committed serious federal crimes, nearly identical to the share that held that view last year. Much like the overall public, Democrats have held firm in their views on Mr. Trump: Nearly 90 percent of Democrats consistently say they think Mr. Trump has committed serious federal crimes. To be sure, nearly 75 percent of Republicans still say Mr. Trump did not commit any serious federal crimes.

Meanwhile, 83% of Fox News-watching respondents believe that after the 2020 election, Trump “was just exercising his right to contest the” results. And, perhaps most importantly, 85% of Republican-leaning poll participants who primarily watch Fox News say the GOP needs to “stand behind” Trump. The remarkable data underscores the grip that Trump continues to exert over the influential right-wing network’s audience. Even as he faces mounting legal problems, including potential charges stemming from his post-2020 election actions, Trump still commands the loyalty of the Fox News audience. “But,” Sargent wrote, “the role of Fox News and right-wing media in this disaster for democracy seems painfully clear.”

A dozen Republicans are campaigning to secure their party’s nomination in next year’s presidential election. But the race between them is not remotely close, according to a New York Times/Siena College poll that was released today. Donald Trump leads his next closest challenger, Ron DeSantis, by 37 percentage points. And no leading presidential candidate has ever faced the kind of federal and state charges that Trump currently does. Trump’s lead is thanks in large part to what Nate calls his MAGA base, which represents roughly 37 percent of the Republican electorate and is exceptionally loyal to Trump.

Perhaps Mr. DeSantis or another Republican will peel away a few of these voters, but realistically this group isn’t going anywhere, maybe not even if Mr. Trump winds up being imprisoned. This group is probably about the same as the voters — 37 percent — who supported Mr. Trump in the polls on Super Tuesday in 2016. Most of the Republican electorate either doesn’t strongly support Mr. Trump in the primary or doesn’t support him at all. electorate seemingly devoted to Mr. Trump, the path to defeating him is exceptionally narrow. It requires a candidate to consolidate the preponderance of the rest of the Republican electorate, and the rest of the Republican electorate is not easy to unify.

Still, businesses aren't feeling too optimistic, with most still expecting a recession this year. However, big companies are hiring, businesses are expanding, and lots of entrepreneurs are filing to open new startups. This was partly due to consumers spending more and business investment being way up. The main measure of business investment in the GDP report is well above pre-pandemic levels, and shows no signs of slowing down ahead of a hypothetical recession. Businesses also aren't feeling too optimistic according to the National Federation of Independent Business' Small Business Optimism Index.

No matter what the Fed seems to do, it's become a game of whack-a-mole — whether it be wages, home prices, creeping commodities, or Fed subsidies that are about to roar in. The idea that the Fed is driving the price of a house to further unaffordability has taken hold. The yield curve can't be wrong, so it remains a matter of time before Fed Chair Jerome Powell crashes the plane — and let's not forget that lurking, lurking election. And the multiple on those profits is going up not because of hideous expansion, but because of a triumph over the pandemic. CNN —Japan’s central bank kept interest rates unchanged Friday despite rising inflation but hinted that it could gradually abandon years of ultra-cheap money, sending the yen soaring and stocks tumbling. “No introduction of the policy rate guidance suggests that the Bank [of Japan] left open the near-term policy rate hike optionality, in our view,” UBS analysts noted. The Japanese yen surged by as much as 1% against the US dollar in response to the BOJ announcement. It has stayed above the central bank’s inflation target for the fifteenth straight month. On paper, the headline numbers suggest the BOJ’s inflation target has already been met.

Traditional CDs will not allow you to deposit money during a term; you'll have to wait to make additional deposits once a CD reaches maturity. Consider whether CD minimum balance requirements will factor into your CD options. For example, a Popular Direct CD requires at least $10,000, while an Ally or Barclays CD does not require a minimum deposit to open. Lengths of pipe wait to be laid in the ground along the under-construction Mountain Valley Pipeline near Elliston, Virginia, September 29, 2019. WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Thursday allowed work on a natural gas pipeline crossing federal land in Virginia to resume over the objections of environmental groups. The justices granted an emergency request filed by Mountain Valley Pipeline, meaning that final elements of the 303.5 mile pipeline running from the northwestern part of West Virginia to southern Virginia can be finished. The appeals court intervened despite Congress including language in the recently enacted Fiscal Responsibility Act backed by Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., that stripped courts of authority to review approval of the pipeline. "The court of appeals' stay orders flew in the face of this recent, on-point, and emphatic congressional command that the remaining construction of the Mountain Valley Pipeline must proceed without further delay," the lawyers added.

The "hawkish" part will please the bears, while the "hold" portion will appeal to the bulls.

The committee's first hearing comes as the Biden administration takes a range of steps to root out junk fees, which the CFPB says includes credit card late fees, overdraft fees and surcharges on ticket purchases. Among other actions, the agency recently fined Bank of America $150 million for charging its customers multiple overdraft fees. In his testimony, Brian Johnson, managing director of financial regulatory consultancy Patomak Global Partners, said the CFPB "has been the most enthusiastic among regulators" in targeting junk fees. Democrats argued the power to target junk fees fits within the CFPB's core duties. "And let's not forget, these are the same banks that are bankrolling the attacks on the CFPB," Warren added.

Fed Chair Jerome Powell said the central bank no longer forecasts a recession this year. It's a shift from previous meetings when the committee left the potential for a recession on the table. However, he punted recession concerns by saying that the Fed staff no longer forecasts a recession in 2023. This differs from previous Federal Open Market Committee meetings, during which the staff did leave a recession on the table. The most recent inflation data were quite encouraging."

During the movie’s July 4 opening, “Sound of Freedom” scored $11.5 million from direct box office sales and $2.6 million, or over 20%, from Pay It Forward ticket sales. A spokesperson for Angel Studios told CNN that these posts could be tied to group ticket sales. For individual tickets, Angel Studios’ system creates a code that allows another person to redeem a free ticket directly from theaters. “There is a pretty foundational bias against renters in American sociological and political life,” said Jamila Michener, a professor of government and public policy at Cornell. But the number of renters has grown steadily over the past decade to about 44 million households nationwide, while punishing housing costs have migrated from coastal enclaves to metropolitan areas around the nation. More salient to politicians, perhaps, is that renters are increasingly well-off — households that make more than $75,000 have accounted for a large majority of the growth in renters over the past decade, according to the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies. At the same time, the struggle to find something affordable has escalated from lower-income tenants to middle-income families that in past generations would very likely have owned their homes. In other words, renter households are now composed of families much more likely to vote.

Fed fines Deutsche Bank $186 million

London CNN —Deutsche Bank has been trying to leave its troubled past behind for years. The Fed found that Deutsche Bank (DB) has made insufficient progress since 2018 to tighten its anti-money laundering controls, improve customer due diligence and ensure compliance with sanctions, among other failures. The Fed had already fined the bank a total of $99 million in 2015 and 2017 over the same issues. Deutsche Bank exited the relationship in 2015. In November, Germany’s financial watchdog BaFin threatened Deutsche Bank with a fine if it failed to take action on money laundering and terrorist financing controls.
