CNN —A week into Ukraine’s surprise cross-border incursion into Russia, it’s becoming increasingly clear that Moscow does not have the situation under control. The incursion – the first time foreign troops entered Russian territory since World War II – is a major embarrassment for the Kremlin. The first reports of Ukrainian troops crossing into Russia’s Kurs region, just north of the Ukrainian border, started to emerge late last Tuesday. By Monday, Kyiv claimed to have control over some 1,000 square kilometers (386 square miles) of Russian territory. Analysts are not expecting Ukraine to attempt to advance much further into Russian territory.

Organizations are shifting to hybrid cloud and on-prem IT infrastructure for more control over data. The FBI said Monday afternoon that it is investigating what the Trump campaign has characterized as a successful effort to hack into its campaign and steal private documents. A Trump campaign spokesperson said Saturday that it had been hacked in June. The claim from the Trump campaign adds to what had already been a deeply antagonistic relationship between Iran and the former president. The apparent hack of Trump campaign files echoes the 2016 Russian campaign against Hillary Clinton, but so far seems notably less elaborate in distributing the hacked files. There is no apparent similar distribution system for the hacked Trump files, at least so far.

In conversations with nearly a dozen Democratic lawmakers and candidates running in competitive races across the country, a common theme emerged. But the move likely wouldn’t help many tipped workers, largely because a sizable share don’t earn enough to pay federal income taxes, experts say. Harris would couple her plan to eliminate taxes on tips with a push for Congress to raise the minimum wage, a Harris campaign official said. Many states and municipalities have higher minimum wages and minimum tipped wages, while some states have eliminated lower minimum wages for tipped workers. Just excluding tips from federal income taxes could reduce revenues by at least $107 billion over 10 years, according to the Tax Foundation. Just getting rid of federal income taxes on tips would lead to a loss of about half that size.

India's Bharti Enterprises said it would acquire a 24.5% stake in BT , worth about 3.2 billion pounds ($4 billion), buying out the British company's top investor, telecoms tycoon Patrick Drahi, as his Altice group struggles with high debts. The Indian company said it would buy an initial 9.99% stake before seeking to add the remaining 14.51% following regulatory approvals. Bharti said it supported BT's executive team and strategy as the group pushed forward with an "ambitious" transformation programme to deliver long-term sustainable growth. BT's shares have risen by 24% in the last six months as the fruits of its long-term investment plan to build the country's fibre network start to materialise. "This scale of investment from Bharti Global is a great vote of confidence in the future of BT Group and our strategy," Kirkby said in a statement following the investment.

AdvertisementHowever, for Trump, a Harris win in Arizona would be a huge blow in his attempts to win a second term. Biden's 2020 victories in Arizona, Georgia, and Nevada — as well as his wins in Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin — effectively cut off Trump's path to victory that year. Should Harris neutralize the border security issue — a feat that seemed unimaginable when Biden was still the presumptive nominee — it'll give her a major opening to win Arizona.

On Monday, stocks struggled ahead of this week's inflation data, which will likely set the tone for short term market action. The S & P 500 was little changed, the Nasdaq Composite made a small advance while the Dow Jones Industrial Average pulled back about a third of a percent. The first trade is a so-called tail hedge against a hotter-than-expected CPI print, i.e. buying S & P 500 put options. The value of the put contracts will increase if the S & P 500 falls on a surprising resurgence of inflation.

China supports Iran in defending its “sovereignty, security and national dignity,” Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi told Iran’s acting foreign minister in a phone call on Sunday, according to a statement by China’s foreign ministry. Iran and the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas have accused Israel of carrying out strike that killed Haniyeh. Wang told Ali Bagheri Kani, Iran’s Acting Foreign Minister, that the killing of Haniyeh had “directly undermined the Gaza ceasefire negotiation process and undermined regional peace and stability,” China’s foreign ministry said. “China supports Iran in defending its sovereignty, security and national dignity in accordance with the law, and in its efforts to maintain regional peace and stability, and stands ready to maintain close communication with Iran,” Wang was quoted as saying. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Sunday nominated Abbas Araqchi as the country’s foreign minister.

Her stance reflects a change in public opinion since Mr. Trump left the White House in 2021. China’s Great Wall of Villages China has moved thousands of people to new settlements on its frontiers. LAS VEGAS — At the largest hacker conference in the world this week, some turned out for a rare overtly partisan event: a fundraiser for presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris. Organizers said the “Hackers for Harris” event, held late Thursday afternoon in a convention center bar at DEF CON, brought in more than $150,000 in pledged donations — a small amount compared to Harris’ recent hauls, but the largest political fundraiser in the conference’s 31-year-history. The hackers’ enthusiasm for Harris contrasts with how much a different tech sector, the cryptocurrency industry, has embraced former President Donald Trump. Some of Trump’s allies drastically misrepresented DEF CON’s findings about election cybersecurity in their failed attempts to prove he had actually won the 2020 election. Last year, Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., introduced a failed amendment to stop paying the salary of a relatively unknown career CISA election cybersecurity official.

Underneath the blast door stands one of the most powerful weapons in the US inventory, a Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile. But unlike the other two parts of the triad – strategic bombers and ballistic missile submarines – the ICBM launch facilities are fixed positions. Last year, the commander of US Strategic Command told Congress that China has more land-based ballistic missile launchers than the US. Russia has been carrying out military exercises involving its tactical nuclear weapons, as President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly threatened to use nuclear weapons since invading Ukraine. That complexity, Schlabach argued, drives the need for modernizing the ballistic missile fleet.

Trump had previously pitched his plan to eliminate taxes on Social Security, writing on his social-media platform Truth Social on July 31: "SENIORS SHOULD NOT PAY TAX ON SOCIAL SECURITY!" Trump has vowed not to cut Social SecurityTrump has previously taken a strong position on Social Security — one at odds with many members of his own party who have faced criticism from Democrats for calling for Social Security cuts.
