Chirag Bahri worked as an engineer on merchant vessels during a nearly decade-long career at sea. In 2010, his chemical tanker was held hostage by pirates for eight months. I had just joined the crew and I really needed to be on the ship to earn money. I was in the engine room when I got the call that pirates had boarded the ship. I still cherish the time I spent working onboard ships and I would encourage people to look at seafaring as a very positive, rewarding profession.

But the coach of Maccabi Ra'anana believes continuing his team's tour against NBA clubs while his country is at war was the right decision. “We are the first team that is playing since the war started and nobody will break Israel, because we are a strong nation,” Orland said before the game. The team from the Israeli National League was playing the first of three games during its tour. The ensuing Israeli bombardment has killed more than 1,530 people in Gaza, according to authorities on both sides. Orland and team sponsor Jeffrey Rosen said one player had chosen to return home, though didn't specify a reason.

CNN —A split-second decision to run and hide in an orange grove could be the very thing that saved 22-year-old Gal Katz’s life, after Hamas militants unleashed a harrowing assault on an Israeli music festival in the early hours of Saturday. As gunmen approached, festival-goer Katz and a friend fled for the nearby grove, where they hid for around six hours. Katz’s other friends at the festival, however, did not survive — killed by terrorists who found them inside a security shelter. I figured if it was something serious, [music festival security] would end the party and tell us what to do. The terrorists aren’t interested in orange groves — they’re looking for houses, they’re looking for cities, they’re looking for settlements.

I came to help my people however I can," said Harapetyan, who was born in this southern corner of Armenia but holds only Russian citizenship. Armenia’s government said on Wednesday that more than 50,000 Karabakh refugees so far had crossed the border, out of a total estimated Karabakh Armenian population of 120,000. The sudden influx has strained resources in Goris, the border town where Armenian authorities have booked out hotels for refugees with nowhere to go. With Jamaica on the ropes following a 2-0 defeat in Kingston, Olympic champions Canada return home for the second leg in control of their own destiny but coach Bev Priestman warned her players not to get complacent. I am demanding that we do that again, that we don't take our foot off the gas and we're only going one way," Priestman said on Monday following a Canada team practice.
