CNN —A 19th-century shipwreck packed with crates of unopened champagne has been found in the depths of the Baltic Sea. The long-forgotten vessel was brimming with bubbly, according to the team of Polish divers who made the discovery off the coast of Sweden. “The whole wreck is loaded to the brim with crates of champagne, mineral water, and porcelain,” Tomasz Stachura, the leader of the Baltictech diving team that found the wreck, said in a press release sent to CNN. The divers said the wreck was in very good condition. While the champagne certainly provided cause for celebration, it was the bottles of water that perhaps shed most light on the vessel’s history.

Prince Harry’s marathon quest against Britain’s tabloids produced a “monumental victory” in the courts, he said in a TV interview that will air Thursday, but it was a “central piece” of the bitter rift between him and other members of the British royal family. Speaking for the first time since winning hundreds of thousands of pounds in damages from Mirror Group Newspapers over his claims that it had wrongfully invaded his privacy, Harry, 39, said that he had been vindicated by the judge’s ruling, even if the price to his relations with his family was high. “I’ve made it very clear that this is something that needs to be done,” Harry said in excerpts released by ITV News, part of an hourlong documentary about the phone-hacking scandal. But he added, “It would be nice if we, you know, did it as a family.”Harry, the younger son of King Charles III, did not explain exactly how his legal battle had further ruptured relations with his father or brother, Prince William. In his memoir, “Spare,” he attributed the rift to multiple causes, including his family’s treatment of his wife, Meghan Markle, a biracial American former actress.

CNN —Prince Harry said in an interview on ITV that despite feeling “vindicated” after a “monumental victory” last year against a major British tabloid, he believes his battle against the press was a “central piece” of the rift that formed between him and members of the royal family. In December last year, Prince Harry was awarded £140,600 after the UK High Court ruled he was the subject of “extensive” phone hacking by Mirror Group Newspapers (MGN) from 2006 to 2011. Justice Fancourt ruled that 15 stories published about Prince Harry by MGN used unlawful information gathering methods such as hacking of voicemail messages and the use of private investigators. Prince Harry described it as a “David vs Goliath situation,” in the ITV documentary. While Prince Harry said he feels vindicated by the Mirror phone hacking decision, he added that he wished his family would have joined him in pursuing the court case.

Although the thought of saving $1 million or more by the time you reach retirement age may seem overwhelming, the process doesn't have to be — especially if you start early. Instead of focusing on the total, try paying attention to your savings rate, which is the percentage of your annual pre-tax income you're contributing to your retirement investment account. But your savings rate is something you can control. Fidelity recommends a savings rate of at least 15%, inclusive of any employer match. To that point, you can begin your retirement savings journey by setting aside just $10 a day, or $70 a week.

CNN —Princess Diana’s letters to her family’s former housekeeper are going on sale, providing an “insight” into her life behind closed doors, including wedding preparations to the then-Prince Charles, and details of Prince Harry and Prince William’s childhood relationship. “[Collison] was a constant in Diana’s life, and remained so all her life,” Luke Macdonald, head of art and estates at Sworders, told CNN Thursday. “They were very close,” said Macdonald, adding that the two would correspond for birthdays, Christmases, and even before Diana’s wedding to then-Prince Charles. One letter dated July 8, 1981 – three weeks before the royal wedding – was handwritten by Diana on Buckingham Palace stationary, telling Collison about the pre-wedding preparations. Another letter, written 10 days after the birth of Prince Harry in 1984, thanks Collison for a gift she sent the newborn.

The inquiry detailed a litany of abuses in state and faith-based care, including rape, sterilisation and electric shocks, which peaked in the 1970s. More than 200,000 people are estimated to have been abused by state and religious organizations in New Zealand that had been entrusted with their care, according to the final report from a landmark independent inquiry released on Wednesday. The abuse included sexual assault, electric shocks, chemical restraints, medical experimentation, sterilization, starvation and beatings, said the report from the Royal Commission of Inquiry Into Abuse in Care. Many of the victims were children who had been removed from their families and placed in state, religious or foster care. “For some people this meant years or even decades of frequent abuse and neglect,” the report said. “For some it was a lifetime; for others it led to an unmarked grave.”In a statement accompanying the release, Coral Shaw, the inquiry’s chair, described the abuse as an “unthinkable national catastrophe.”

LONDON — Britain's King Charles III is set for a bumper £45 million ($58 million) pay raise after profits at the sovereign's public estate more than doubled, according to official records. Profits of The Crown Estate — a portion of which funds the monarchy — increased 148% from £443 million in 2022-23 to £1.1 billion ($1.4 billion) in 2023-24, an annual report showed Wednesday. The Crown Estate, the national portfolio of historical and commercial land-holdings, is owned by the British monarch but managed independently and its revenues are given to the government. In exchange, the monarchy currently receives 12% of Crown Estate profits — a proportion calculated on funds two years in arrears. Staffing the royal household cost £27.9 million in the last financial year, while property maintenance was £47 million amid continued renovations of Buckingham Palace.

And, fittingly, in the first full year of his reign, the British monarchy introduced a slew of measures to tackle its rising carbon emissions. The King’s two Bentleys will also be modified within the next year to run on biofuel, according to Britain’s PA Media. The Royal Household aims to transition to an “almost fully electric” fleet of vehicles eventually, the accounts said, without providing a target date. Whether biofuels used for vehicles reduce carbon emissions is contentious and depends on many factors, including their source. Crown Estate profits soared in the 2023-24 financial year to a record £1.1 billion ($1.4 billion), boosted by revenue from offshore wind projects.

New reports on the finances of Britain’s royal family and its ancient property portfolio have revealed a double dose of good news for the household, which has been destabilized by illness and injury in recent months. Profits from the Crown Estate, which oversees the royal family’s massive land and property holdings, jumped to £1.1 billion (about $1.4 billion) from £442.6 million in the previous year, according to the estate’s annual report, mainly thanks to deals involving the leasing of seabed sites to offshore wind producers. As a result, the money the royal family receives from the government — known as the sovereign grant — will rise to £132 million in 2025-2026, up from £86.3 million in recent years. For centuries, net profits from the Crown Estate have been passed to the government, in return for a fixed yearly payment to fund the royal family and its duties. Since 2012, this payment has taken the form of the sovereign grant, which is calculated as a percentage of the estate’s profits.

CNN —A British-Canadian couple who were attempting to sail across the Atlantic have been found dead on an island off the east coast of Canada. The couple left Halifax Harbour, Nova Scotia on June 11 en route to the Azores, a group of Portuguese islands in the mid-Atlantic, around 2,000 miles away. It is not clear why the couple abandoned the Theros and got into a lifeboat. They stayed in touch after Clibbery moved back to Canada and Packwood visited him in Salt Spring Island near Vancouver, where the Theros was docked, in spring 2016. “He took me on my first ever yacht trip and I loved it,” Packwood told The Guardian.

The bodies of two sailors who planned to sail from Nova Scotia to the Azores using green energy were found washed ashore at a Canadian national park this month, four weeks after they were last seen, the authorities said. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police responded to calls on July 10 that a 10-foot inflatable lifeboat containing human remains had been discovered on Sable Island National Park Reserve, according to a news release from the agency. The authorities did not identify the remains, but said they believed they were those of a 70-year-old man and a 60-year-old woman from British Columbia. A Facebook post by the man’s son, James Clibbery, later identified them as James Brett Clibbery and his wife, Sarah Justine Packwood, who had left Halifax Harbor in Nova Scotia on June 11 bound for the Azores. “The past few days have been very hard,” the younger Mr. Clibbery said in the post, adding that DNA tests would be carried out to confirm their identities.
