Read previewSouth Florida residents recently noticed an unusual new neighbor in their artificial lake: a manatee. Some Florida manatees travel through the ocean around the US, from Texas to as far north as Delaware. Experts have seen manatees in this area for the past few years, so the big visitor isn't totally unique. How to help your local, neighborhood manateeSometimes people can be a little overzealous in trying to help manatees, Howell said. At The Wall Street Journal's Global Food Forum in June, Joe Erlinger, the president of McDonald's US, detailed the company's missteps in meatless burgers and salads. Over the years, McDonald's has been able to fold in some noncore items — namely, coffee and chicken. It's not just consumer demand that's keeping McDonald's menu limited to the more-traditional, less-than-body-boosting items — it's its franchisees, too. And no one goes to McDonald's looking for greens. And no one goes to McDonald's looking for greens.

“If people really want salads from McDonald’s we will gladly relaunch salads,” said Joe Erlinger, the president of McDonald’s USA, in a June interview at the Wall Street Journal’s annual Global Food Forum. For McDonald’s, putting salads on the menu was likely a way to avoid the veto vote and stay atop recent healthy food trends. McDonald’s salads were “one likely source of these infections,” the CDC said at the time. McDonald’s removed salads from national menus in 2020 to help simplify restaurant operations, the company said. Another menu item that’s not coming to McDonald’s any time soon?

“We demand that our friends in Mother Nature Cambodia, and all political prisoners, be released immediately,” said Fridays for Future, the youth-led global climate strike movement founded by Thunberg, in a statement. “Like what we are seeing with dictators in other countries, Cambodia is becoming more repressed,” said Alejandro Gonzalez-Davidson, a Spaniard who co-founded Mother Nature Cambodia over a decade ago, alongside local Cambodian activists. Video footage showed activists Mother Nature Cambodia activists Ly Chandaravuth, Long Kunthea, Thun Ratha, Phuon Keoraksmey and Yim Leanghy surrounded by dozens of armed police officers and dragged away into waiting cars, bound for prisons across the country. “This week, a new generation of Cambodian activists was born – one that did not exist back in 2012,” he said.

Between abandoned coal mines and an engine plant scheduled for closure, a gleaming new factory hovers like a phoenix over Billy-Berclau, a small industrial town in northern France. Inside, 700 newly hired workers are making next-generation electric vehicle batteries for the Automotive Cells Company — part of a grand project to revive the wider region’s flailing fortunes. A “Battery Valley” is rising here from the remains of industries that shuttered during a wave of globalization. “Industry is an anti-National Rally weapon, because in places where anger has risen, we’re restoring hope,” Roland Lescure, Mr. Macron’s deputy industry minister, said earlier this year. Billy-Berclau, and nearly every other town in this region of Pas-de-Calais handed a resounding victory last week to National Rally in parliamentary elections — a trend that is likely to be repeated in a final voting round on Sunday.

Spain thought they had beaten Germany after Dani Olmo’s 51st-minute finish to a fine team move. Having beaten the hosts in dramatic fashion, some will now consider Spain the favourites to win Euro 2024. Spain had never previously beaten a host nation in a knockout tie at either a World Cup or European Championship. What Germany had to remember was that De la Fuente’s Spain are far more versatile in the way they play. His final game in professional football was mixed.

The Shell logo is displayed outside a petrol station in Radstock on February 17, 2024 in Somerset, England. Energy giant Shell on Friday said it expects to record a post-tax impairment hit of up to $2 billion mainly linked to its Singapore and Rotterdam plants, while also saying trading in its key gas division will decline on the quarter. This comes after Shell on Tuesday announced it would temporarily suspend on-site construction at its 820,000 metric tons a year biofuels facility in Rotterdam amid current market conditions. The oil major also anticipates a second non-cash post-tax impairment of $600-800 million after agreeing to divest its Singapore refining and chemicals plant back in May. On the downside, RBC flagged "higher corporate costs and a neutral result from the chemicals division."

Read previewCutting back on processed meat in your diet may reduce the risk of serious diseases, including some cancers, a new research analysis predicts. Processed meat has long been thought to be a culprit in chronic illnesses like heart disease. Specifically, there would be about 352,900 fewer cases of diabetes, 92,500 fewer cases of heart disease, and 53,300 fewer cases of colorectal cancer, according to the estimate. However, more research is needed on unprocessed red meat like steak, as some studies have suggested that, in moderation, it may be less harmful than processed meat. One important caveat to the study is that the potential health benefits of cutting out processed meat also depend on what you replace it with.

China's BYD opens its first electric vehicle (EV) factory in Southeast Asia, a fast-growing regional EV market, in Rayong, Thailand, July 4, 2024. China's BYD opened an electric vehicle plant in Thailand on Thursday, the automaker's first factory in Southeast Asia, a fast-growing regional EV market where it has become the dominant player. "Thailand has a clear EV vision and is entering a new era of auto manufacturing," BYD CEO and President Wang Chuanfu said at the opening ceremony. The BYD plant is part of a wave of investment worth more than $1.44 billion from Chinese EV makers who are setting up factories in Thailand, helped by government subsidies and tax incentives. Other EV rivals in the local market include Great Wall Motor, which also has a production facility in Thailand, and U.S. automaker Tesla.

"For nearly two decades we have worked under the same basic hot dog exclusivity provisions," the MLE said in a statement in June. This photograph taken on April 6, 2022, shows a general view of the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) plant in Dadri. The mounds of jet-black coal shimmering under the afternoon sun at the Dadri power plant are a raw illustration of India's coal dependence -- a habit that despite increasing pressure, the country is finding hard to kick. India has asked power companies to order equipment worth $33 billion this year to fast track capacity additions of coal-fired power in the years ahead, as the South Asian nation struggles to meet booming electricity demand, two government officials said. India is rushing to add fresh coal-fired plants as it is barely able to meet high power demand with the existing fleet in non-solar hours. Post pandemic, the country's power demand scaled new records on the back of the fastest rate of economic growth among major economies and increased instances of heatwaves.

CNN —Buried deep in an Australian cave, archaeologists have uncovered evidence that an Aboriginal ritual may have been passed down 500 generations and survived 12,000 years, making it the oldest known continuous cultural practice in the world, according to a new study. They cut it, and used carbon dating to determine it’s 12,000 years old, from towards the end of the last Ice Age. Normally they just disintegrate.”They also uncovered another wooden stick which, though 1,000 years younger, was remarkably similar. Indian labor officials visited a Foxconn factory in the country's south this week and questioned executives about the company's hiring practices, Reuters reported. Narasaiah said Foxconn told the labor officials the factory employs 41,281 people, including 33,360 women. He added that the labor inspectors interviewed 40 married women inside the plant, who raised no concerns about discrimination. “This discovery is important because it shows that after the extinction of the dinosaurs, grapes really started to spread across the world.”Much like the soft tissues of animals, actual fruits don’t preserve well in the fossil record. How ancient forests changedWhen the dinosaurs went extinct, their absence changed the entire structure of forests, the team hypothesized. “In the fossil record, we start to see more plants that use vines to climb up trees, like grapes, around this time,” Herrera said. Meanwhile, as a diverse set of birds and mammals began to populate Earth after the disappearance of the dinosaurs, they likely also helped spread grape seeds. Several fossils are related to modern grapes and others are distant relatives or grapes native to the Western Hemisphere.
