China is expected to keep benchmark lending rates unchanged on Wednesday, grabbing the spotlight in Asia as the relentless rise in oil prices toward $100 a barrel seeps deeper into investor sentiment globally. Rates futures markets are pricing in a 30% likelihood of a quarter point hike in November or 40% chance it will be in December. China's central bank is expected to stand pat on rates as fresh signs of economic stabilization and a weakening yuan constrain put the brakes on further monetary easing efforts, at least for now.

SEATTLE (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers clinched the NL West title for the 10th time in 11 seasons with a 6-2 win in 11 innings over the Seattle Mariners on Saturday night. Evan Phillips (2-4) pitched the 10th inning and Joe Kelly got the final three outs. There was debate before the season if San Diego might be ready to take over the NL West from the Dodgers after its heavy offseason spending. After nine scoreless innings of terrific pitching on both sides, each team got a key at-bat from a pinch-hitter in the 10th. KERSHAW RETURNSClayton Kershaw pitched four innings in his return to the mound for the Dodgers following an extended rest between starts.

Inflation fell every month for a year, but in July that trend ended with housing prices rising along with the prices for oil and gas. WSJ’s Dion Rabouin digs into August’s CPI inflation report and explains what’s really happening with prices. Photo: Stefani Reynolds/Agence France-Presse/Getty ImagesRising diesel prices are inflating the bills Brett McMahon is getting from the companies that truck in the plywood, rebar and other supplies his concrete-contracting business needs. Asking his clients to renegotiate contracts to ease that pain, he said, has been “hit or miss.”

Think Sweden, where a nosedive in the local crown currency over the past 18 months is proving a blessing for used-car dealers and other exporters. Companies like KP Energy, which imports solar panels to sell to trade buyers, cite the damaging effects of higher purchase costs and rising interest rates, which hit household spending. "It impacts us a huge amount when the crown weakens against the euro and when the demand picture changes," its CEO Filip Wiqvist said. A Demoskop poll this week showed 42% would vote "No" to joining the euro, while 34% would support it. Believing the crown is around 20% undervalued, the Riksbank has hedged its own foreign currency exposure in anticipation of future strengthening.

CNN —Wall Street’s optimism has edged up in recent weeks after an August slump to levels not seen since the collapse of several regional banks earlier this year. CNN’s Fear & Greed Index, which tracks seven different barometers for market sentiment, has oscillated between “neutral” and “greed” territory this month after plunging to a “fear” reading mid-August. The broad-based S&P 500 index has roared 16% higher this year, propped up by Wall Street’s infatuation with artificial intelligence that’s driven a powerful rally in tech stocks. While the Fed’s policy meeting is taking place next week, there’s a laundry list of factors stoking uncertainty in the market. September has historically been the worst month for stocks, and it could live up to its reputation this year.
