New York CNN —Conn’s HomePlus, a 134-year-old furniture and electronics retailer with locations primarily in the southern United States, has filed for bankruptcy and is closing nearly half of its 170 stores. The 73 Conn’s HomePlus stores closing are listed on its website. Other states where stores are closing include Arizona, Colorado, North Carolina and Virginia. Badcock, another home goods retailer that operates in the southeast US under the “Badcock Home Furniture & more” name. That purchase increased the company’s total retail footprint to more than 500 stores among the two brands, however 35 Badcock stores are also closing.

New York CNN —A toxic mix of surging rental rates and vanishing support for renters has catapulted evictions above pre-pandemic levels in some major cities. Evictions have increased most significantly in Sun Belt cities where housing affordability has worsened and where renters often have fewer protections. Other cities, including Minneapolis (+44%) and Columbus, Ohio (+37%), are also experiencing higher levels of evictions than before the pandemic. Three-quarters of the 34 cities tracked by the Eviction Lab had evictions increase between 2022 and 2023. The vast majority of evictions are for issues related to nonpayment of rent, according to the Eviction Lab.

The company said it was compelled to set aside more money to cover the cost of repairing customers’ vehicles. That badly missed analysts’ forecasts of earnings per share of 68 cents a share. It was the nearly 50% drop in operating profit in Ford Blue, which includes traditional gasoline-powered cars and truck sales to consumers, that hurt its bottom line. Since its launch in June, the limited time offering is “resonating with our millions of customers,” and the company claimed the move was siphoning off business from its competition, according to an internal McDonald’s memo obtained by CNN. McDonald’s launched the “$5 Meal Deal” in late June intended to be for one month only. The meal includes a McDouble cheeseburger or a McChicken sandwich, small french fries, four-piece Chicken McNuggets and a small soft drink. Diners are not going out to eat as often and spending less when they do, causing fast food sales to slow and restaurant traffic to dip.

Washington, DC, public transportation services — including trains and buses — begin experiencing delays, according to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. At 5:30 a.m., US cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike tells customers that it was “aware of reports of crashes” of its software on Microsoft Windows operating systems, according to a company advisory viewed by CNN. Australian lenders ANZ and Westpac were also impacted, according to Downdetector, a website that tracks cyber outages. Other states also report impacts to their driving services, including Georgia, North Carolina, Texas and Tennessee. CrowdStrike would take steps “to prevent anything like this from happening again,” according to a statement on the company’s website.
