Karen Bass, Mayor of Los Angeles, waves the Olympic flag as Thomas Bach, President of International Olympic Committee, applauds during the Closing Ceremony of the Olympic Games Paris 2024 at Stade de France on August 11, 2024 in Paris, France. After a successful 2024 Olympics and Paralympics in Paris, the bar has been set high for the next summer Games in Los Angeles in 2028, something that key stakeholders in that event say the city will be ready for. LA 2028 President Casey Wasserman attended the Paris Games, an event that he told Ross Sorkin "reminded people why they fall in love with the Olympics," and one he said organizers will look to build upon in Los Angeles. Wasserman said Los Angeles got a glimpse of that with the Olympic Torch handover ceremony, when Tom Cruise scaled the Hollywood Sign and the Olympic Rings replaced the "OO"'s in the sign — which Wasserman noted was done with CGI. Actress Jessica Alba, who is on the Los Angeles 2028 board of directors, said the Games will present all different aspects of the city's culture, from Hollywood to fashion to food, as "a global platform to showcase what they got."

watch nowYoung adults face financial obstaclesOver decades, attitudes about marriage and parenthood have changed. More recently, experts say, the overall cost of living has become a contributing factor in decisions to forgo parenthood. Between 1991 and 2024, the costs for child care rose at nearly twice the pace of overall inflation. But parenthood and related child care costs are not just personal financial issues, he added. "The cost of child care is really an economic growth and productivity issue as well," House said — and that affects all Americans, not just those with young kids.

CNN —Former first lady Melania Trump has begun inching more back into the political spotlight on the final few months of the 2024 presidential campaign with a series of politically pointed social media videos. The memoir itself is an exception to a pattern Melania Trump has largely stuck to for the 2024 presidential cycle, as former President Donald Trump has been running to become president again. At the Republican National Convention, Melania Trump did not deliver a speech but appeared on stage during the final night of the convention. “This morning, ascend above the hate, the vitriol, and the simple-minded ideas that ignite violence,” Melania Trump wrote in the July 14 statement. Even so, Melania Trump herself has repeatedly described herself as a private person.

Police in Springfield, Ohio, said Monday they had received no credible reports of immigrants harming pets, contradicting a claim by Republican vice presidential nominee Sen. JD Vance. They added that they had no information to support similar assertions about immigrants squatting or disrupting traffic. There is a long history of conservative politicians and pundits denigrating Haitian immigrants in particular, including with baseless allegations of cannibalism, according to historians who have studied the former French colony. “Please vote for Trump so Haitian immigrants don’t eat us,” Cruz wrote on X, as a caption on a photo of cats. “Haitian immigrants are here legally, under the Immigration Parole Program,” the website says, referring to a federal humanitarian program for migrants.

But a new study has found that a particular group of chemicals called metabolites, which are tested for as part of routine newborn screenings, could identify babies with an elevated risk. The researchers compared the results of newborn screening tests for 354 infants who died of SIDS with 1,416 infants who did not. “Maybe we’re looking at some food sensitivities,” she said, but added that much more research is needed into the link between SIDS risk and metabolism. Dr. Joanna Parga-Belinkie, a neonatologist at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia who also wasn’t involved, similarly questioned whether newborn screenings can provide enough answers. “But every baby that’s born isn’t going to get a deep-dive genetic evaluation — they do get newborn screenings,” she added.

Whereas he gave himself only six months from the idea for the first Fyre Fest to its attempted execution, McFarland said, he has spent a full year working on Fyre Fest II, with more than seven months to go. The first iteration of Fyre Fest promised ticket buyers luxury villas and gourmet food at what was supposed to be an extravagant music festival in the Bahamas. In August 2023, the first drop of 100 presale tickets for Fyre Fest II (at $499 apiece) sold out within a day, even though its website at the time offered no lineup, no specific location and no details about accommodations.

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Monday suggested the Federal Reserve will make a rate cut at its meeting next week, a move that investors have eagerly awaited for some time. We're almost certain to get a rate cut at next week's meeting." The market seemed to recover on Monday following its worst week of 2024 so far, with investors hopeful a rate cut will aid the economy. Cramer reviewed the recent market action, saying Wall Street had not been behaving as it should with rate cuts just on the horizon. "Rather than trying to figure out what's driving these irrational moves, you should focus on buying dips in high-quality stocks," he said.

“Teens need our support now more than ever.”Significant socioemotional development occurs during adolescence, along with substantial changes to brain structure and function. The researchers originally intended to track ordinary adolescent brain development over time, starting with MRIs the authors conducted on participants’ brains in 2018. The study revealed accelerated cortical thinning in the post-pandemic brains of teens — occurring in 30 brain regions across both hemispheres and all lobes for girls, and in only two regions for boys. The prevalence of the thinning amounted to 43% and 6% of the studied brain regions for girls and boys, respectively. The regions affected in boys’ brains are involved in processing objects in the visual field as well as faces.

“The second reason that breast density is important is because having dense breast tissue raises a woman’s level of risk of developing breast cancer,” Feigin said. Breast cancer survivor JoAnn Pushkin, 64, has advocated for more than a decade that there be a national requirement for women to be notified of their breast density. Now I have lymphedema, and all because it was detected at that later stage,” said Pushkin, who has testified before the FDA about breast density and co-created the website DenseBreast-info.org, which features resources on breast density. The new FDA changes require facilities to provide patients with information about their breast density and include specific language in the mammogram result letter to explain how breast density can influence the accuracy of a mammogram. A study published in 2022 found that the breast cancer death rate dropped by 43% within three decades, from 1989 to 2020, translating to 460,000 fewer breast cancer deaths during that time.

CNN: What exactly are PFAS chemicals? They are in nonstick surfaces; they’re used in firefighting foams, protecting packages from grease, and waterproofing of carpets and your clothing. CNN —Plain water is the only thing visitors are allowed to consume inside the huge cavern at Carlsbad Caverns National Park in New Mexico. Cheetos are a no-go, and the recent park visitor who dropped a bag full of them created a “huge impact” on the cave’s ecosystem, park rangers said Friday in a Facebook post. “The processed corn, softened by the humidity of the cave, formed the perfect environment to host microbial life and fungi. Let us all leave the world a better place than we found it,” the post urged park goers. The Big Room at Carlsbad Caverns National Park is the largest single cave chamber by volume in North America.

During my three-day visit in August, I stayed at a tiny home by Tiny Away for one night. AdvertisementLaunched by a Singaporean tiny home startup called Big Tiny in May 2023, Tiny Away features five tiny houses that measure around 139 square feet each — or slightly smaller than an average parking space. Tiny Away is currently the only option for those who want to try tiny house living without going abroad. For one, there's a glamping resort on Lazarus Island that offers stays for a similar price to Tiny Away. But Tiny Away strikes me as ideal for guests looking for some solitude or a chance to experience the city-state minus all the high rises.
