Costco adds platinum bars to its precious metals lineup
  + stars: | 2024-10-02 | by ( ) www.nbcnews.com   time to read: +1 min
Costco continues to chip away at the gold mine that is the precious metals market. The wholesaler is adding Swiss-made platinum bars to its selection. Costco on Wednesday announced the 1-ounce platinum bars, on sale for $1,089.99 on its website alongside its now-famed gold bars and silver coins. Gold bars launched at Costco in August 2023, and not even two months later were selling out within hours of a restock. Analysts at Wells Fargo reported in April that Costco was selling as much as $200 million worth of gold bars a month.

The start of October is bringing little relief to parts of the western United States, where 36 million people are under heat alerts and sweltering temperatures are setting records into the fall. Excessive heat warnings are in place in Arizona, California and Nevada, where high temperatures are expected to be 10 to 25 degrees Fahrenheit hotter than normal. On Tuesday, Phoenix reached 113 F, making it the hottest October day in the city’s recorded history. Before this week, Phoenix had never recorded a high temperature over 110 F in the month of October. Further north, San Francisco reached 94 F on Tuesday, which was the city’s hottest day in two years.

“Pinoy Pride” slogans, meals with community members, in-language ads and recruiting Filipino Americans for the campaign. With just over a month before the election, Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign has been courting a group of Asian American voters, Filipino Americans, that may play a decisive role in the crucial swing state of Nevada. While Asian Americans make up almost 12% of Nevada’s electorate, well over the previous margin of victory, Filipino Americans constitute by far the largest ethnic group in that demographic. The ad blitz follows several other efforts made in the past few months to mobilize the Asian American community. With a month to go, Abby Herrera, a 19-year-old Filipino American organizer with grassroots nonprofit One APIA Nevada, said more can always be done to attract Filipino American voters.

"Thanks for showing up for us," Erik Hooks, the deputy administrator at the Federal Emergency Management Agency told her. Harris plans to visit areas smacked by the storm “as soon as possible without disrupting emergency response operations,” a White House official said. In North Carolina, recent polls from CNN and Marist showed Harris and Trump tied at 49-49%. Looking to capitalize on the moment, Trump has tried to paint Harris as inept in her response to the hurricane. Then there were reports that he once asked officials if he could use a nuclear bomb to destroy a hurricane.

Disputes across the country are brewing over the role of local election boards and how much power they have to question – or even throw out – election results. In Georgia, for instance, Trump-backed members of the state election board recently passed controversial rules that could allow local election boards responsible for certifying results to conduct investigations that threaten to delay certification. One of the Georgia rules, the “Reasonable Inquiry Rule,” would allow election officials to conduct a “reasonable inquiry” before certifying election results. The petitioners in the case argue that the rule would give partisan board members a wide ability to cast doubt on, or even reject, election results. In some cases, the threat of legal action has been enough to deter officials from pursuing challenges to the certification process.

This week's small business tour is the Harris campaign's latest effort to quell Trump's gains. Harris is adopting that argument for her own campaign, working to draw a similar contrast with her Republican opponent. "Vice President Harris has proven that she will be a champion for small business," Richard Garcia, the Harris campaign's small business engagement director, wrote in a statement Tuesday. Over the next week, the Harris campaign will extend that pitch specifically to small businesses in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania. So far, Harris has proposed giving small businesses a $50,000 tax deduction for their startup expenses, a tenfold expansion from the current $5,000 deduction.

LAS VEGAS — Vice President Kamala Harris said Sunday that she would "double" Justice Department resources to crack down on cartels and cut the flow of fentanyl into the U.S., just hours after former President Donald Trump repeated his false claim that she wants to legalize the drug. At a rally Saturday, Trump also discussed fentanyl, baselessly claiming Harris wants to legalize it. "She's so radical she even wants to legalize fentanyl right away," he told a crowd Saturday in Wisconsin, a claim he repeated Sunday before a crowd in Pennsylvania. More than 100,000 people died of drug overdoses last year, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Sunday's rally was Harris' second in Nevada since she launched her presidential bid.

Rose was one of baseball’s greats – a winning-obsessed sparkplug who topped MLB’s all-time hit list with 4,256 over a 24-season career. It wasn’t until 2004 that Rose publicly admitted betting on baseball and the Reds, though he denied ever betting against his own team. Sometimes, on the weekend of baseball Hall of Fame inductions in Cooperstown, New York, he also would hold autograph sessions at a nearby bookstore. While Cooperstown didn’t admit him into its Hall of Fame, the Reds got him into theirs with the commissioner’s permission. That was the perfect way to capture Rose, said Johnny Bench, the Hall of Fame catcher.

Rupert Murdoch looks on as he walks on the day of the hearing on the contentious matter of succession of Rupert Murdoch's global television and publishing empire, in Reno, Nevada, U.S. September 23, 2024. British real estate portal Rightmove rejected a sweetened $8.29 billion takeover bid from Rupert Murdoch's Australian property listing firm REA Group on Monday, saying the fourth bid still undervalued the company. That gave Rightmove an implied value of 781 pence per share, about a 3% increase over the previous bid. Rightmove said that during the discussions, REA had requested to extend the deadline to allow it to consider a potential fifth proposal. The U.K. company looks primed for a steady recovery from a property market downturn as the potential for more rate cuts boosts sentiment in the U.K. housing sector.

Pete Rose, who holds the Major League Baseball record for hits and games played, has died at the age of 83, according to a spokesperson for the Clark County Office of the Coroner/Medical Examiner in Nevada. The hard-charging Rose, nicknamed “Charlie Hustle,” broke Ty Cobb’s 57-year-old hits record in 1985. After his playing career, Rose continued as manager of the Reds. In 1989, Rose was banned from baseball for life after an investigation concluded that he had bet on games while he was both a Reds player and manager. Over the years, Rose applied for reinstatement as well as possible inclusion into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

No ballot will have a gun-related initiative led by voters this fall. Among the four proposed reforms, voters in Washington state wanted to ban assault weapon sales, while voters in California proposed requiring trigger locks on firearms and annual gun license renewals. Heyne said it is a sign that state and federal legislators are enacting gun laws, meaning voters no longer have to take matters into their own hands. In a landslide, voters in California greenlit proposals that strengthened gun laws. In May, the state passed a law preventing local governments from enforcing red-flag laws.

CNN —The Supreme Court on Friday rejected a request from Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to appear on New York’s presidential ballot even though he suspended his campaign last month and backed former President Donald Trump. The high court turned away Kennedy’s longshot appeal without comment and there were no noted dissents. I want you to vote for Donald J. Trump,” Kennedy said. It’s the second presidential ballot access appeal to reach the Supreme Court in recent weeks, underscoring the spoiler role third party and independent candidates can play in tight elections. On Friday, the Supreme Court denied an emergency request from the Green Party to ensure presidential candidate Jill Stein could appear on the ballot in the battleground state of Nevada.

Which Battleground State Voters Could Sway the Election? It says that in order for Democrats to win, Black voters must make up 30 percent of all voters and at least 30 percent of white voters must vote Democratic. Black voters, who cast nearly a third of the ballots in 2020, overwhelmingly favored Mr. Biden — by almost 90 percent. That’s because educational attainment divides mostly white voters, and many of Nevada’s less-educated voters are not white. Even so, that wasn’t enough for him to overcome the coalition of white voters with a college degree and voters of color who delivered Mr. Biden a victory.

By comparison, from Ohio’s March primary through August, Democrats held the edge, dropping $78.5 million on ads to Republicans’ $59 million. “Bernie’s special interest allies are dumping hundreds of millions of dollars into this race to try and defeat Sherrod because they know Sherrod will always stand up to them to do what’s right for Ohio,” Brown spokesperson Matt Keyes said in a statement. Democrats, who hold a one-seat majority in the Senate, are growing increasingly nervous about Sen. Jon Tester’s re-election bid in Montana. Democrats had a clear advertising advantage coming out of a contentious March primary that cost Moreno’s campaign millions of dollars to win. Close behind is WinSenate, a political action committee affiliated with the Democrats’ Senate Majority PAC, which has spent more than $22 million this month.
