Doha, Qatar CNN —There have been 21 editions of the men’s World Cup since its inauguration in 1930 but Qatar 2022 is set to be a tournament like no other. Since it was announced as the host city almost 12 years ago, it was always destined to be a World Cup of firsts. Seventy percent of the squad that won the trophy came through the academy, and that number has only increased heading into the World Cup. Female officialsQatar 2022 will also see female referees officiate a men’s World Cup match for the first time. Referee Yoshimi Yamashita will make her debut at the men's World Cup.

On Saturday, 32 national soccer teams are gathering in Qatar for the start of the FIFA World Cup. That same year, Mahshid Razaghi, who played for the Olympic soccer team, was executed for selling anti-government newspapers. In 1984, Habib Khabiri, a member of the men’s national soccer team, was executed by firing squad for membership in an anti-regime organization. Preventing Iran from participating in the World Cup would send a concrete message that regimes that persecute their own athletes have no place in world sporting organizations. While such a ban would mean Iranian athletes can’t participate in this World Cup, many in Iran believe the team isn’t representative of the people of Iran in the first place but only represents the Islamic regime.

In fact, it’s really two coaching gigs disguised as one. The squads are broadly made up of the same players, but the requirements are vastly different.

Four years after watching the World Cup from home, the U.S. Men’s National Team revealed which players it’s sending to Qatar—with a couple surprises and major questions about how the squad will line up in less than two weeks. The Americans, who begin the tournament on Nov. 21 against Wales, will be led by Chelsea’s Christian Pulisic, who has for years been the pride of U.S. soccer. The 24-year-old is part of perhaps the deepest and most talented section of the roster, its attacking unit. It also features 19-year-old Giovanni Reyna, who plays his club soccer for Borussia Dortmund in Germany; Timothy Weah, a 22-year-old with Lille in the French league; and fellow 22-year-old Brenden Aaronson who has hit a good run of form for the English Premier League’s Leeds United.

In a video message produced by Professional Footballers Australia (PFA) and released Wednesday, 16 Socceroos called on Qatar to recognize same-sex relationships and improve the rights of migrant workers. The PFA also released an open letter to Qatar expressing need for reform. “No country is perfect, and every country – hosts of major events or not – has its challenges,” the spokesperson said. The report – “categorically” denied by tournament organizers – did not connect all 6,500 deaths with World Cup infrastructure projects and has not been independently verified by CNN. The World Cup kicks off on November 20 and runs through to the final on December 18.

New York CNN Business —The Major League Baseball Players Association is joining the AFL-CIO, the nation’s largest labor federation that includes unions representing a total of 12.5 million members. Recently, it announced plans to add about 5,400 minor league players, the majority of whom have signed cards requesting union representation. The announcement was made Wednesday by Tony Clark, a retired Major League player and executive director of the players union, and Liz Shuler, president of the AFL-CIO. The union also won the right to binding salary arbitration for players who haven’t yet qualified for free agency. The MLBPA will join several other sports unions in the AFL-CIO, including the National Football League Players Association, the National Women’s Soccer League Players Association, the United Soccer League Players Association, the US Women’s National Team Players Association and the United Football Players Association, which was recently organized by the United Steelworkers, another AFL-CIO affiliate, to represent members of the upstart US Football League.
