REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File PhotoNEW YORK, Nov 11 (Reuters) - Roger Ng, the former Goldman Sachs (GS.N) banker convicted for helping loot Malaysia's 1MDB sovereign wealth fund, on Friday sued the government's star witness Tim Leissner for more than $130 million, alleging fraud. BOSTON — The former Yale University women’s soccer coach whose cooperation with authorities helped blow the lid off the nationwide college admissions bribery scandal by leading the FBI to the scheme’s mastermind was sentenced Wednesday to five months in prison. Federal prosecutors and Meredith’s defense lawyers had recommended no additional prison time beyond the one day he had already spent in custody. But U.S. District Court Judge Mark Wolf said Wednesday that Meredith’s greed and his victims warranted a stiffer sentence. Before he was sentenced, Meredith, his voice shaking, issued an apology and said he had ruined his reputation and his career because he was driven by greed and the desire to provide for his family. In addition to the prison term, Meredith was sentenced to a year of probation, fined $19,000 and ordered to forfeit more than $550,000.
BOSTON, Nov 9 (Reuters) - A former Yale University women's soccer coach who cooperated with authorities investigating the U.S. college admissions scandal was sentenced on Wednesday to five months in prison for accepting bribes to help parents get their children into the Ivy League school. The prison sentence Wolf ordered came despite prosecutors' recommending Meredith, 54, receive a non-custodian punishment after becoming a key witness in the "Operation Varsity Blues" investigation. The investigation centered on William "Rick" Singer, a California college admissions consultant who admitted in 2019 to facilitating college entrance exam cheating and bribing coaches to secure his clients' children's admission as phony athletes. The investigation led 51 people to plead guilty, including actors Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman, two of the many wealthy parents Singer counted as clients. I can always write an awful lot that I can’t draw,” Jony Ive , the mastermind behind Apple ’s most revolutionary products, says as he holds up a Space Age–style coffee cup. “If I draw this, it only captures certain attributes.”Ive is sitting in the garden of a Pacific Heights carriage house high in the San Francisco hills, a building he converted into a private studio and occasional crash pad for friends. Apart from the cup—devised by Ive’s business partner and fellow designer, Marc Newson, and made by the Japanese brand Noritake—Ive designed nearly every indoor and outdoor element of this deceptively simple space, down to the gray marble bathroom sink and the garden’s round, rough-hewn stepping stones.
PESHAWAR, Pakistan — The oldest prisoner at the Guantanamo Bay detention center was released and “reunited with his family” in Pakistan, the country's foreign ministry said in a statement Saturday. “We are glad that a Pakistani citizen detained abroad is finally reunited with his family,” the statement said. The Pentagon said in a statement Saturday that Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin had “notified Congress of his intent to repatriate Saifullah Paracha to Pakistan” last month. Following Paracha’s release, 35 detainees remain in Guantanamo Bay and 18 have been cleared for release, according to Amnesty International. The most high-profile prisoner held at Guantanamo Bay prison is Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the alleged mastermind of the 9/11 attacks.
After more than six months of ping-ponging, second-guessing, whistleblowing, arguing and mud-throwing, Elon Musk on Thursday closed his $44 billion deal to buy Twitter (TWTR.N). The social media firm, its employees, its new owners, its creditors and the rest of the world are probably worse off. If Twitter shares had followed the same trajectory as social media rival Snap (SNAP.N) since March 31, losing more than 80%, its investors would be some $38 billion worse off. If capitalism is about maximising value for the almighty shareholder, regardless of the consequences for other stakeholders, the Twitter saga upholds that primacy. loadingCONTEXT NEWSElon Musk completed his deal to buy social media firm Twitter for $44 billion on Oct. 27.
In the world of celebrity spirits, few famous names appear to have the same passion for their business that Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul have for their Dos Hombres mezcal. Unlike in their hit AMC drama, where Cranston's Walter White was the mastermind fueling the show's massive meth-dealing operation, it was Paul who was instrumental in launching Dos Hombres. The duo have worked hard together to promote their brand, touring the country to create awareness and excitement around Dos Hombres, even stopping by Costco locations to surprise shoppers by pouring samples. Eric Herschmann, a former White House lawyer, was concerned about a sworn statement Trump ultimately signed. An email obtained by Axios shows the lawyer warned against signing off false claims of voter fraud. The message concerned a lawsuit Trump and his legal team were preparing to file against Georgia Gov. In a statement to Axios Herschmann said, "I am not discussing my conversations with the president or the surrounding circumstances." "The Court finds that these emails are sufficiently related to and in furtherance of a conspiracy to defraud the United States," Carter wrote.
This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Sarah Huff, a 38-year-old BabyQuip Quality Provider. Now I make an average of $5,000 a month renting out baby gear to traveling families. Babierge, which was just starting to branch out, had created a platform like Airbnb, but instead of showcasing houses, it showcased baby gear. After years of answering emails from new BabyQuip Quality Providers and running classes, in July 2020, I joined the BabyQuip corporate officeI now manage the BabyQuip Quality Providers. I earn a salary, but I still wanted to keep my BabyQuip business because I love it so much.
The records show he made regular payments, totaling at least $30,000 in payments this year, to another law firm, Wiley Rein, for legal consulting. Other numbers publicly listed for Troupis Law Office appear disconnected or are inoperable. Phone, email and text messages left with Johnson’s campaign were not immediately returned. On May 11, Chesebro donated $5,800 to Johnson’s campaign, the maximum amount an individual can contribute during the primary, under FEC rules. That lawsuit alleges that Troupis was a link between the Trump campaign and the fake electors.
People take part in a protest march on the fifth anniversary of the assassination of anti-corruption journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, in Valletta, Malta October 16, 2022. REUTERS/Darrin Zammit LupiVALLETTA, Oct 16 (Reuters) - Demonstrators in Malta marked five years since the car bomb murder of anti-corruption journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia on Sunday, two days after two brothers admitted to her killing and were each sentenced to 40 years in prison. Many of those present carried pictures of Caruana Galizia and Maltese flags. She said Caruana Galizia was: "A Woman of Steel, because she was a woman of principle, a woman who could tell right from wrong". No government representatives were present at the demonstration but Prime Minister Robert Abela said earlier that Caruana Galizia's death was a dark episode "that we must learn from".
Even in their first efforts, the GAN images were quickly on par with those made by any other, less intelligent software. You can find the results on the Generated Photos site, where you can filter by ethnicity, age, sex, eye color, and other attributes. Generated Photos' GANs tend to match conventional beauty standards, a product of the models that have been fed to the software. I'm not sure anyone would be surprised to find fake images accompanying testimonials on an Estonian bitcoin exchange or an online CBD seller. Are they real people deploying fake images, or fake people deploying fake images?
Showtime’s five-part docuseries about The Lincoln Project, the super PAC founded by multiple well-known Republican strategists and operatives with a shared contempt for Donald Trump, reminds me a lot of the organization’s work in 2020: noisy but not necessarily all that effective in realizing its stated goals. It’s not that The Lincoln Project founders shouldn’t be proud of the house they built. We also definitely didn’t need so much footage of various fans — including celebrities — and Lincoln Project members talking about how cool, popular and great the organization is. At the time of that revelation, not even The Lincoln Project disputed it. And while I won’t deny the coverage The Lincoln Project garnered during and after the 2020 election, is it all that hard to troll someone like Trump?

The CIA on Saturday unveiled the model of Ayman al-Zawahiri’s safe house in Kabul used to plan the U.S. drone strike that killed the Al-Qaeda leader last month. The scale model of Zawahiri’s house was shown to reporters as part of a tour of a newly refurbished museum at the agency's headquarters. “This was the model that was used to brief President Biden on the Zawahiri mission,” said Janelle Neises, deputy director of the CIA museum. Zawahiri was struck by a Hellfire missile as he stood on the balcony of the house, U.S. officials say. “He carved a trail of murder and violence against American citizens, American service members, American diplomats and American interests,” Biden said.
Bringing the highest-grossing film of all time back to theaters has two purposes for Disney: drum up excitement for "The Way of Water" and fill a vacant spot on the theatrical calendar. The rerelease of the original film is a sort of litmus test for whether audiences still want to visit its eco-conscious science fiction world. But it never captured the cultural relevance that Star Wars or the Marvel Cinematic Universe – both also owned by Disney – have enjoyed. "Avatar" captivated audiences more than a decade ago, in part because of the technology that Cameron helped develop to film and animate the movie. Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, "Avatar: The Way of Water" tells the story of the Sully family.
Oracle's marketing team "imploded" following layoffs and the departure of its CMO this summer. A source told Insider that means salespeople will be selling products to sectors they never had before, including healthcare, which is now a key focus with Cerner. Plus, products like Oracle's cloud infrastructure face competition from tech giants like Amazon, making marketing a key lever in that fight. That morning, nearly 50% of some marketing groups received phone calls that they were being laid off, including Kelman's senior staff, multiple sources told Insider. Oracle's marketing structure, as it once was, is gone.

American Made Media Consultants became the source of consternation for President Donald Trump's campaign staff, who were kept in the dark about its operations. Despite its $617 million spending through AMMC, the Trump campaign publicly disclosed little information about the company, including how it used the money. Insider independently verified details of this person's account with other people close to the Trump campaign. The shell company — incorporated as American Made Media Consultants Corp. and American Made Media Consultants LLC — allowed Trump's campaign to skirt federally mandated disclosures. "Nothing was done without Jared's approval," the former Trump campaign advisor said.
It’s July 1, which for New York Mets fans means it’s Bobby Bonilla Day. The deal is part of a contract negotiated by Bonilla’s agent Dennis Gilbert, which will pay Bonilla $1,193,248.20 every year until 2035. Bonilla, a former All-Star who last played with the Mets in 1999, will be 72 when his contract with the team expires. The Mets wanted to part ways with Bonilla in 1999, but he had $6 million left on his contract. Madoff was the mastermind of the most notorious Ponzi scheme in history.

One of the perks that comes with The Platinum Card® from American Express is access to exclusive events and dining reservations via the By Invitation Only program. In 2017, Amex doubled down on this by relaunching its famed Platinum Card. Facing fierce competition in the premium space from JP Morgan's Chase Sapphire Reserve rewards credit card, American Express boosted its travel and experience platforms. "Now in 2018, we see that our Platinum card members are passionate about travel, entertainment, superior service, and have evolved in how they undertake that." I've written before about how the Amex Platinum Card offers a ton of value, easily enough to outweigh its annual fee.
