PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Philadelphia 76ers team president Daryl Morey expressed optimism on Friday that reigning NBA MVP Joel Embiid would return from a knee injury in time for a possible postseason run. “We're hopeful,” Morey said before the 76ers hosted the Atlanta Hawks and three days after Embiid underwent surgery on his left knee. The initial report from the 76ers said that Embiid would be “re-evaluated” in four weeks. Morey declined to describe the exact procedure that Embiid had, which would have provided a clue to the significance of the injury. “Our priority was to get a big, but we wanted to add to our playoff rotation this year,” Morey said.

Five Black Romantic Movies to Stream
  + stars: | 2024-02-09 | by ( Robert Daniels | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Much like Blackness is not monolithic, neither is Black love. The relationships in this collection range from young passions to midlife romance, and the types of movies range from glossy studio pictures to vital queer indies. That prospect would be easier if Harper, a writer, didn’t base his new book off his friends’ lives. Composed of a deep ensemble — Terrence Howard, Sanaa Lathan and Regina Hall included — the film follows multiple relationships as these adult friends confront their romantic futures through biting humor and unflinching honesty. And thankfully, it kicked off a charming romantic film and TV franchise.

ATLANTA (AP) — Bill Belichick made no demands for additional authority during his two interviews with Atlanta in the coach search that led to the hiring of Raheem Morris, according to Falcons owner Arthur Blank. Speaking for the first time on Friday about the search, Blank said Belichick did not request control of player personnel, as was widely speculated. Belichick had player personnel control in New England. Blank said he was impressed by the experience Morris, a former Atlanta assistant coach, gained with the Rams. “I would never, ever feel slighted ... for what people would feel about coach Belichick, right?”Blank was ill and did not attend Monday's news conference.

Zyn is selling their nicotine pouches like hotcakes

New York CNN —Move over vapes, Americans appear to have a new addiction: Zyn, a tobacco-free nicotine pouch product, that has exploded in sales over the past year. Philip Morris announced Thursday that it shipped about 350 million cans of Zyn in 2023, a whopping 62% growth compared to the previous year. Nicotine is very addictive and can harm young people’s developing brains, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. However, like Juul, the popularity and growth of Zyn might face difficulties, in particular from US government. “Zyn is the next battle.”Despite the growth, shares of Phillip Morris declined 2% in early trading because of lower demand for cigarettes.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The National Guard still has enough money on hand to complete the training of Ukrainian pilots on F-16 fighter jets despite the U.S. running out of funds to send additional weapons and assistance to Kyiv, the head of the Guard Gen. Dan Hokanson said Thursday. President Joe Biden announced in August that the U.S. would begin training Ukrainian pilots on the F-16, as part of a multi-national effort to provide Ukraine the advanced fighter jets. Pilot training began in October at Morris Air National Guard base in Tucson, Ariz. But the pilot training has been able to continue, Hokanson said. “We do have the resources to continue the training that’s already started,” Hokanson said, and get that initial tranche completed this year.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The slumping Philadelphia 76ers have acquired guard Buddy Hield from the Indiana Pacers for Marcus Morris Jr., Furkan Korkmaz and three second-round draft picks, a person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press on Thursday. The Sixers also sent Daniel House and a 2024 second-round pick to the Detroit Pistons, the person said. The House trade creates $4.3 million in cap space as part of the traded player exception. The trades have opened salary cap and roster space for the Sixers to pursue a player on the buyout market. Hield has been one of the top 3-point shooters in the NBA for years in both volume and makes.

“As there is no factual basis that could reasonably justify requiring opposing counsel and other employees to be a witness in the case, the State respectfully requests that the Court quash each of the subpoenas served,” Willis wrote. Among the Fulton County staff subpoenaed are Executive District Attorney Daysha Young and Deputy District Attorneys Sonya Allen and Dexter Bond. An attorney who represented Wade in his divorce proceedings as well as Wade’s personal and business records were also subpoenaed, according to Willis’ filing. Last month, Trump co-defendant Mike Roman and his attorney filed a motion to dismiss the case over allegations Willis had an improper romantic relationship with Wade and financially benefited by hiring him as a special prosecutor on the case. Because Defendant Roman cannot establish the necessity of any of the testimony or documents he has demanded, the subpoenas should be quashed,” she wrote.

It's a story increasingly familiar in the energy industry: Some utility companies don't properly assess the risks wildfires pose to their operations. The primary purpose is to prevent power lines from igniting a wildfire during periods of high fire danger. The lawsuit also alleges the company "inexcusably kept their power lines energized during the forecasted high-fire danger conditions." A PG&E utility worker locates a gas main line in the rubble of a home burned down by wildfire in Paradise, California, Nov. 13, 2018. NEW YORK (AP) — Kyrie Irving scored 36 points in a dazzling return to Brooklyn exactly one year after he was traded to Dallas, leading the Mavericks to a 119-107 victory over the Nets on Tuesday night. Luka Doncic had 35 points, 18 rebounds and nine assists as the Mavericks' guard tandem took turns hitting some deep 3-pointers in the second half when the Nets were trying to make a run. Doncic quickly shed the mask he began the game with to protect a nasal contusion and just missed his 10th triple-double of the season. Ben Simmons had nine points, nine rebounds and seven assists after sitting out a loss to Golden State on Monday. Rather, the Nets showed photos of Irving, Seth Curry and Markieff Morris on the overhead videoboard, welcoming the three former Nets back to Brooklyn before starting lineups were announced.

Like, ‘Oh, are you being serious or are you not?’ No; I am deadly serious when I’m doing these things. I’m just chasing this strange feeling.”Leith’s way of talking about music is a lot like his actual music: blurry and discursive, but also precisely evocative. Take his opera “Last Days,” which receives its U.S. premiere on Feb. 6 in Los Angeles as part of the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Green Umbrella series. Jason Redmond | AFP | Getty ImagesWhen Satya Nadella replaced Steve Ballmer as Microsoft CEO in February 2014, the software company was mired in mediocrity. Many tech industry analysts and investors would say that, thanks largely to Nadella, Microsoft is now set up to be a powerhouse for the foreseeable future. In a 2020 interview, Pat Gelsinger, then CEO of VMware, said offering his company's software on Microsoft's Azure cloud was akin to a "Middle East peace treaty." Nadella is perhaps best known in the tech industry for pushing Microsoft deeper into cloud computing. While some in the younger generations have Microsoft software at work, it's not necessarily what they grew up using and may not be what they prefer.
