CNBC's Jim Cramer on Tuesday discussed consumer behavior, saying many are fed up with high prices of certain companies' products and services, such as those in the airline or retail business. They are pushing back on high prices, they are demanding bargains," he said. To Cramer, the travel and leisure bull market might be over, noting that many airlines have recently reported disappointing quarters. Cramer suggested that consumers maybe "aren't flocking to cruises as much as they're fleeing from higher hotel prices." And she's exacting, not revenge travel, but revenge against all who've kept prices high."'

It found that people generally have a strong preference for a brick-and-mortar experience when buying luxury items. Online luxury sales picked up during the pandemic but have since come back down to earth. The overarching theme is that many consumers haven't warmed up to shopping luxury — namely, ultra-luxe items and brands — online. AdvertisementWe try to treat luxury with the same e-commerce experience we use for paper towels, and that just doesn't work. For the most part, luxury brands prefer that customers would rather shop in-store.

This year, the Chicago-area house from "Home Alone" and the iconic "Full House" townhouse in San Francisco hit the market with asking prices in the millions. In June, CardRates.com examined 25 iconic houses featured on screen. Using Zillow's estimated home values and Bankrate's mortgage calculator, the report determined the monthly mortgage rates and the annual income required to afford each property. The mortgage rates were determined assuming a 20% down payment, a 30-year fixed loan, and the current interest rate as of June 2024, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. Some of the properties in CardRates.com's report are currently on the market and the amounts indicated are the current list prices.

The Biden administration is pausing student loan payments for eight million borrowers enrolled in its new repayment plan, known as SAVE, after a federal appellate court issued a ruling temporarily blocking the program. “Borrowers enrolled in the SAVE plan will be placed in an interest-free forbearance while our administration continues to vigorously defend the SAVE plan in court,” Miguel Cardona, the secretary of education, said in a statement. “The Department will be providing regular updates to borrowers affected by these rulings in the coming days.”For now, borrowers are unable to apply to the SAVE repayment plan, and applications for other income-driven repayment plans are also unavailable. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eight Circuit, based in St. Louis, granted a request by Missouri and other Republican-led states for an administrative stay, which prevents the Biden administration from “implementing or acting pursuant” to the rule that created the SAVE program last summer, according to the court filing.

For Europe, the prime concern is tariffs," wrote Goldman analysts. "If the entire impact came in 2025 this would be enough to eliminate any growth that year (our current top-down forecast is 4%)," Goldman wrote. Pay down balances early to avoid a high utilization ratioAnother important credit scoring factor is your credit utilization ratio — a comparison of your revolving accounts' credit card balances and credit limits from your credit reports. Closing a card might also hurt your credit scores if it was your only credit card. There are a lot of misconceptions about how closing a credit card can impact other aspects of your credit scores. New York CNN —US stocks sold off broadly Thursday as Wall Street continued to shed tech stocks. The Dow fell 464 points, or 1.1%, retreating from a record high reached a day ago. Investors have this week moved out of the Magnificent Seven tech stocks that powered the market to repeated record highs this year. Shares of smaller companies that tend to do well in a lower-rate environment began rallying last week, helping the Dow reach fresh highs. Tech stocks also took a hit this week after Bloomberg reported Tuesday that the Biden administration is mulling plans to impose more sanctions on Chinese tech firms and to heighten semiconductor trade restrictions between the US and China.

CNN —A prominent North Korea expert and former CIA analyst has been indicted by a New York grand jury on charges of secretly working for the South Korean government in exchange for designer goods, Michelin star meals and $37,000 for a fund that she controlled. The indictment alleges Terry acted as a “valuable source” of information for the South Korean government. She has authored reports for both American and South Korean news outlets. South Korea is a key US ally in the Asia-Pacific, though Terry’s indictment is not the first case of alleged collusion to test the two countries’ friendship. Internal Pentagon documents leaked last year described, in remarkable detail, private conversations between two senior South Korean national security officials, whom the US had allegedly wiretapped.

This Is Literally Your Brain on Drugs
  + stars: | 2024-07-17 | by ( Andrew Jacobs | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
The image, as it happens, comes from dozens of brain scans produced by researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis who gave psilocybin, the compound in “magic mushrooms,” to participants in a study before sending them into a functional M.R.I. The kaleidoscopic whirl of colors they recorded is essentially a heat map of brain changes, with the red, orange and yellow hues reflecting a significant departure from normal activity patterns. The blues and greens reflect normal brain activity that occurs in the so-called functional networks, the neural communication pathways that connect different regions of the brain. The scans, published Wednesday in the journal Nature, offer a rare glimpse into the wild neural storm associated with mind-altering drugs. “Psilocybin, in contrast to any other drug we’ve tested, has this massive effect on the whole brain that was pretty unexpected,” said Dr. Nico Dosenbach, a professor of neurology at Washington University and a senior author of the study.

It wasn’t until his brain morphed into a computer, however, that he knew for sure he was on a psychedelic trip. “We found that psilocybin desynchronizes the brain,” said co-senior author Ginger Nichols of the study published Wednesday in the journal Nature. “When psilocybin is on board, the brain is disconnecting from its typical pathways and reconnecting to different parts of the brain,” said Nichols, an associate professor of psychiatry at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. “Science doesn’t fully understand the brain yet, but I felt as if I suddenly knew exactly how the brain works. Sara Moser/Washington University School of MedicineA window for changeScans showed that in the days after the psilocybin trip, most brain networks returned to normal.
