League backtracks on controversial Pride tape ban

Mandatory Credit: Aaron Doster-USA TODAY Sports Acquire Licensing RightsOct 24 (Reuters) - The National Hockey League (NHL) has reversed its ban on players supporting social causes on their equipment, including the use of rainbow-coloured Pride tape on their sticks. The NHL had instituted the ban via a league-wide memo sent to its 32 teams ahead of the 2023-24 regular season, drawing criticism from players, fans and a number of prominent organizations. "After consultation with the NHL Players' Association and the NHL Player Inclusion Coalition, players will now have the option to voluntarily represent social causes with their stick tape throughout the season," the NHL said in a statement on Tuesday. The decision by the NHL comes three days after Arizona Coyotes defenseman Travis Dermott became the first player to defy the ban with colourful tape wrapped around the shaft of his stick during his team's home opener. When Alex Rodriguez's teen daughters make mistakes, he wants them to feel comfortable enough to come clean to their parents. The 48-year-old former Major League Baseball All-Star, who retired in 2016, has made his own share of high-profile mistakes. It felt particularly important for Rodriguez, whose father left his family when he was 10 years old. It can help relieve anxiety, teach that no one is perfect and model the good behavior of taking responsibility for your actions. It's unrealistic to expect your children to never make mistakes, Rodriguez adds: If his daughters never messed up, he'd worry "they're not pushing hard enough."

HOUSTON (AP) — Houston reliever Bryan Abreu has appealed the two-game suspension he was given by Major League Baseball for what the league said was intentionally throwing at Adolis Garcia of the Texas Rangers during Game 5 of the AL Championship Series. Because of the appeal, Abreu will be eligible to pitch in Game 6 on Sunday night, when the Astros can advance to the World Series for a third straight season with a win. MLB said Saturday that all six umpires decided Abreu’s pitch was intentional. Abreu, who was also fined for the incident, is one of Houston's top relievers and has a 1.42 ERA in seven appearances this postseason. The defending World Series champion Astros were again felled by a subpar start from Framber Valdez and lackluster play at home. Josh Sborz walked Alex Bregman to start the Houston eighth and struck out Alvarez before José Abreu singled with one out. Abreu singled on a grounder to right field before Tucker grounded into a force out that left him out at second and sent Alvarez to third. Laphonza Butler, who was appointed 18 days ago to fill the Senate seat left vacant by Dianne Feinstein’s death, said on Thursday that she would not run for the office next year, clearing the way for a truly open race in California that features three Democratic congressional members and a former Major League Baseball star. In an interview with The New York Times, Senator Butler said that she intended to be “the loudest, proudest champion of California” in the 383 days remaining in her term in office, but that she had realized “this is not the greatest use of my voice.”Ms. Butler has never been elected to office and was appointed by Gov. Gavin Newsom less than three weeks ago, helping him to fulfill his promise to name a Black woman to complete Senator Feinstein’s term. Even without Ms. Butler in the running, Californians will have a wealth of candidates to choose from. Springboks delay naming team as they ponder bench options

The Springboks have been regimented in naming their team four days before a test, but director of rugby Rassie Erasmus says there are still deliberations over whether to go with a 5-3, 6-2 or 7-1 split between forwards and backs on the bench. In some cases we are not even sure who is the best," Erasmus told reporters on Tuesday. "We are keeping our options open for a 7-1, 6-2 or 5-3 (bench split) with both Handre and Manie being available. I think having everybody fit and seeing what the French team looks like may influence us going 7-1 or 6-2." "I have been in World Rugby meetings where we break into little groups and he's a very interesting character with the way he looks at the game," Erasmus said.
