The cheese, worth over $390,000, was taken from London cheese specialist Neal’s Yard Dairy on Oct. 21, the company said in an Instagram post. Three cheeses from three different suppliers were stolen: Hafod Welsh organic cheddar, Westcombe cheddar, and Pitchfork cheddar. Neal's Yard Dairy said that "despite the significant financial blow," they've paid each of their artisan cheesemakers in full for their products. Oliver said that as the world’s most consumed cheese type, a cheddar theft affects exports to 20 different countries. The whereabouts of the stolen cheese have yet to be determined.

The bitter nationwide debate over transgender rights is playing out on a very personal level in a federal court lawsuit filed in Virginia by a former Liberty University employee. She was fired by the evangelical Christian school after disclosing her identity as a transgender woman. The lawsuit on behalf of Ellenor Zinski was filed in July by the American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia and the Richmond law firm of Butler Curwood. Earlier this month, the conservative legal organization Liberty Counsel filed a brief on behalf of the university asking the federal district court to dismiss the lawsuit. Wyatt Rolla, the ACLU of Virginia’s senior transgender rights attorney, rejected the claim of a set-up.

PHILADELPHIA — Elon Musk’s legal team filed court papers that delayed a potential ruling on a lawsuit over his super PAC's $1 million lottery-style giveaways. The federal court filing automatically blocked any immediate action in state court, where Judge Angelo Foglietta had already scheduled Thursday’s hearing. Summers said he planned to argue in federal court to have the case returned to state court. “We will proceed to federal court, and we will address the issues there and seek to have the matter remanded back to the state court,” he told reporters outside the state courtroom Thursday. “Let’s be serious.”“If anyone could land a rocket ship in Philadelphia, it’s Elon Musk,” Summers replied.

Rent costs have long weighed on lower-income households — now it’s coming for the middle class. A cost-burdened household is defined as one paying 30% or more of pretax income on rent and housing costs. This figure is widely used as a threshold for affordability: the Census Bureau measures housing costs against it, and the Department of Housing and Urban Development has used it for decades. While nearly 40% of middle-class renters are burdened by costs nationwide, in Tennessee that figure is 37%, placing it among the upper half of states with the largest share of cost-burdened middle-class renters. The growing pressure on middle-class renters may finally be spurring political action.

Turning Point Action is one of several outside groups that have taken over the work of canvassing on behalf of Republicans. Some churches and pastors promoted Turning Point events during worship services and in social media posts, NBC News found. Training churches to serve as unofficial Trump campaign surrogates fits into a broader campaign by Turning Point to mobilize evangelicals. With Republicans favored to win the Senate, Harris may have few opportunities to pursue an ambitious legislative agenda, shifting the Democratic ideological fight to key personnel decisions. “It’d be a strategic blunder for Harris to pick an ugly fight over Lina Khan’s future when there’s already strong consensus among Democrats. Moderate senators like Bob Casey and Jackie Rosen are actively campaigning on the FTC’s work to lower prices,” said a Senate Democratic aide, who was granted anonymity to discuss a sensitive subject. Removing her would not only infuriate the left but it could provoke a confirmation fight with Senate Republicans over her replacement. Some in the progressive movement believe Harris should simply leave her there without going through confirmation again in the Senate if need be.

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. — The longtime music director at a northern Michigan church said he was fired just a few months before retirement after officials learned that he was in a same-sex marriage, a dismissal that has angered members and led to sidewalk protests by the choir. “He’s extremely talented, he’s perfect on the piano, he has perfect pitch and because of him, I look forward to going to church every week,” said Bob Holden, a chorister at St. Francis Church in Traverse City. The Catholic Church teaches that marriage is a lifelong union between a man and a woman. “We take employee privacy very seriously and are not able to disclose details about individual personnel matters,” the Diocese of Gaylord, which oversees St. Francis, said in a written statement. In 2020, Asian American turnout in Georgia surged by 84% compared with the previous presidential election, playing a larger role than ever in an election that Joe Biden won by a very narrow margin. And much has been made of the local Asian community since then. Many are also newer immigrants, so specific ethnicity — Korean or Vietnamese, for example — is more of an identity than simply being Asian American. “National identity matters a lot more than their pan ethnic or racial identity,” said Karthick Ramakrishnan, founder of AAPI Data, a research group. Many Asian Americans are small-business owners or work in health care or the service industry or for international companies.

Desperate rescue efforts were underway across southern and eastern Spain on Thursday after torrential rain brought devastating floods that killed at least 95 people — a figure expected to rise. Stunning images emerged from Valencia, Spain’s third most populous city, showing dozens of cars wedged atop one another after being carried by a wave of mud and debris into the walls of the narrow city streets. “Unfortunately, there are dead people inside some vehicles,” said Transport Minister Óscar Puente. A year's worth of rain fell in just eight hours in areas around the city, meteorologists said, fueling the worst natural disaster in the country's modern history.

The sickle, the padlock and certain types of wood found at the grave site were all believed at the time to hold magical properties protecting against vampires, according to the Nicolaus Copernicus team. Among the other bodies found at the site was a “vampire” child, buried face down and similarly padlocked at the foot. “It’s emotional to watch a face coming back from the dead, especially when you know the story about this young girl,” Nilsson says.
