North Korea holds rallies denouncing US, warns of nuclear war

[1/5] People attend a mass rally denouncing the U.S. in Pyongyang, North Korea, June 25, 2023 in this photo released by North Korea's Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). About 120,000 working people and students took part in the rallies held across the capital on Sunday, state news agency KCNA reported. Nuclear-armed North Korea has been testing various weapons including its biggest intercontinental ballistic missile, ramping up tension with the South and the South's main ally, the United States. In a separate foreign ministry report, North Korea said the U.S. was "making desperate efforts to ignite a nuclear war," accusing Washington of sending strategic assets to the region. North and South Korea remain technically at war because their 1950-53 conflict ended in a truce, not a treaty.

CNN —Kyriakos Mitsotakis, leader of Greece’s center-right New Democracy party, has won a second four-year term as prime minister. During his election campaign, Mitsotakis vowed to further extend a 35-kilometer fence at the Greek-Turkey border, to block migrants trying to enter Greece. Fueled by May’s initial election results, Greek bonds and stocks have rallied with optimism that a pro-investment government could prevent financial backsliding. Other fringe far-right entries to the race included the nationalist party Greek Solution and the ultra-religious, anti-abortion Niki. “But despite the populist cacophony, Mitsotakis’ strong victory provides the new government a clear mandate to govern.”

Furby, the ’90s toy phenomenon that divided kids and parents into opposing camps when it first hit stores and quickly became a craze, is making yet another comeback. The latest iteration of the animatronic toy launched on Amazon Thursday and rolls into stores nationwide on July 15 after a nearly 10-year gap. Still, Hasbro said it sold more than 40 million Furby toys globally in the first three years after they launched. In 2016, Hasbro launched Furby Connect, a version of the toy that incorporated Bluetooth for content upgrades via an app and an off button. “There’s a saying in the toy industry that what’s old is new again,” he said.

Three teenage girls were found slumped in a car in the parking lot of a rural Tennessee high school last month, hours before graduation ceremonies. Two were dead from fentanyl overdoses. The third, a 17-year-old, was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Two days later, she was charged with the girls’ murders. Prosecutors cited a Tennessee law that permits homicide charges to be brought against someone who gives fentanyl to a person who dies from it.

WASHINGTON, June 21 (Reuters) - U.S. Senate Majority Chuck Schumer on Wednesday will call for "comprehensive legislation" to advance and ensure safeguards on artificial intelligence (AI). In remarks planned Wednesday at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, Schumer will reiterate the need for bipartisan congressional action. Congress is narrowly divided and has not reached any consensus on AI legislation. "AI is unlike anything that we've dealt with before, and it may be exceedingly difficult for legislation to tackle every single issue," Schumer will say. Congress should encourage not stifle innovation, Schumer will argue: "But if people don't think innovation can be done safely, that will stifle AI's development and even prevent us from moving forward."

Reports say the US is expected to send Ukraine depleted-uranium tank rounds along with M1 Abrams tanks. The rounds do what other tank rounds don't, like sharpening on impact and starting fires. Two, depleted-uranium tank rounds are pyrophoric, which means they burst into flame under intense heat and pressure. Explosive reactive tank armor "kind of increases the chance that the penetrator will not hit at the correct angle," Spoehr said. Tank rounds, of course, aren't the only way to defeat an enemy tank.

The killing of a powerful governor in Darfur, in western Sudan, has heightened worries that fighting between the country’s warring military factions is pushing a region blighted by genocide two decades ago into a new ethnic civil war. Since April, Sudan’s military has been battling the Rapid Support Forces, a well-armed paramilitary group that until recently was part of the national armed forces. The fighting has razed parts of the capital, Khartoum, and also engulfed Darfur. Peace talks led by American and Saudi diplomats have failed to broker a durable cease-fire. The United Nations mission to Sudan said in a statement that “compelling eyewitness accounts attribute this act to Arab militias and the Rapid Support Forces.”

The Federal Reserve enacts monetary policies to stabilize prices and maximize employment in the U.S. economy. These dueling goals are known as the dual mandate. For example, if prices are too hot, the Fed may vote to raise interest rates to influence a decrease in borrowing. Other experts argue that the dual mandate remains key to keeping the U.S. economy safe and stable. Watch this video to see how the Fed tries to strike a near-impossible balance to promote both parts of the dual mandate.

The Gadsby show was developed in response to an invitation extended to several institutions by the Musée Picasso to mark the 50th anniversary of Picasso’s death in part by considering what the artist and his work mean today. “It seemed necessary to think about that question in terms of the culture shift brought about by feminism over the 50 years since his death,” Small said. “We wanted to foster dialogues about the myths and tropes of the male-dominated Modernist canon that Picasso exemplifies,” the curator added. Thomas and Minter declined to be interviewed. “I celebrate and congratulate the Brooklyn Museum for trying to begin that conversation.”

Hong Kong CNN —For days, images of New York choking in smoke have stunned the United States, as residents struggle to deal with the unfamiliar challenge of severe air pollution. That means its people are exposed to high levels of fine particulate matter, or PM2.5, a widely used indicator of harmful air pollution. It culminated in the infamous 2013 “air-pocalypse,” when the air quality index hit 755, smashing what was supposed to be the top of the scale at 500, according to the US Embassy in Beijing that kept a daily air quality monitor. In 2021, Beijing recorded its best monthly air quality since records began in 2013; photos now show mostly blue skies in the city. It’s an encouraging sign, and evidence that the right policies and investment can help fix air quality.

The Apple headset is expected to cost about $3,000 and will look like ski goggles, according to current and former employees familiar with its development. Eventual hits like the iPod, iPhone and Apple Watch started in niche markets that grew into big businesses. But even Apple executives have been skeptical about the company’s prospects in virtual reality, which, they say, may still not be ready for its mainstream moment. That drop-off cuts recent metaverse start-up investment to about a quarter of its peak in the first half of 2022, PitchBook said. “The metaverse investment fad — it came and went, and now people are focused on A.I.,” said Doug Creutz, an analyst at Cowen & Company.

BEIJING, May 27 (Reuters) - Economic and trade development in the Asia-Pacific still faces many disturbances and challenges, China's commerce minister Wang Wentao said. Wang made the comments at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) conference in Detroit, where he met with several leaders and exchanged views on multilateral and bilateral economic and trade issues amid wider global trade rifts and uncertainties. "The Asia-Pacific region has always been the region with the most growth vitality, development potential and economic resilience in the global economy, but economic and trade development still faces many disturbances and challenges," Wang said, according to a statement from the Chinese Ministry of Commerce. Wang also discussed China's positions on supporting the multilateral trading system and promoting sustainable and inclusive trade development. World leaders have been looking for ways to fortify global supply chains, which are still wobbly in the post-COVID world.
Are the travails of the bond market, like Macbeth expounds, a "tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing?" The billionaire class — so incorrectly sought after by the media — so often seems to use the bond market as a sort of intellectual cudgel. That's why I always start my discussion on bonds with the simple query of "where are the layoffs, not forget about stocks, think fixed income." Here the bond market polices only those companies that haven't pivoted to making a profit. They, among all sectors, could be pummeled by the bond market freeze and by the consumers' paralysis.

The persistent discord between the Fed's policy signals and investors' interest-rate expectations is unusual and unsettling, Mohamed El-Erian said. It could lead to a surge in market volatility or end up eroding the central bank's credibility, the top economist said on Twitter. Money-market prices reflect expectations for lower borrowing costs by year-end, but the Fed hasn't signaled any rate cuts. The Fed has been persistent in its war against inflation, and raised interest rates for the 10th time in a row this month. "It is also unsettling as its resolution will involve either a bout of market volatility or further erosion of Fed credibility," he added.
