Josh Shapiro, Democrat of Pennsylvania, wrote in his college newspaper three decades ago that Palestinians were “too battle-minded” to achieve a two-state solution in the Middle East, prompting criticism as Vice President Kamala Harris considers him to be her running mate. Mr. Shapiro, 51, has embraced his Jewish identity and been one of the Democratic Party’s staunchest defenders of Israel at a moment when the party is splintered over the war in Gaza. But he says his views have evolved since publishing an opinion essay as a college student at the University of Rochester in New York, when he wrote that Palestinians were incapable of establishing their own homeland and making it successful, even with help from Israel and the United States. “They are too battle-minded to be able to establish a peaceful homeland of their own,” he wrote in the essay, published in the Sept. 23, 1993, edition of The Campus Times, the student newspaper. “They will grow tired of fighting amongst themselves and will turn outside against Israel.”

She is not one of us. When former President Donald J. Trump challenged Vice President Kamala Harris’s racial identity at a public forum on Wednesday — and again on social media the next day — that was the message at the core of his remarks. It is a tactic that has long been part of the underside of American politics: presenting an opponent as somehow “other” or “not one of us” — someone who cannot be trusted or truly known. But while this has been a recurrent theme in American campaigns for at least a century, Mr. Trump has taken it to a new level, historians and analysts said. Mr. Trump has personally led the effort, explicitly falsifying the biography of his opponent and invoking race and gender in ways no modern major-party leader has done before.

A federal grand jury is set to begin hearing evidence this month in the scam to steal the Graceland estate from Elvis Presley’s family, sources say. It involved a company called Naussany Investments, which claimed that Lisa Marie Presley, Elvis’ only child, owed millions of dollars in unpaid loans before she died. To collect on that debt, Naussany Investments sought control of Graceland through a foreclosure sale of the historic mansion. The documents Naussany Investments filed turned out to be forged, and a judge tossed out the case. More than half a dozen links seemed to separately connect Holden with the foiled scam at Graceland, NBC News found.

New York CNN —Donald Trump on Wednesday took the stage before a divided National Association of Black Journalists conference. Trump unleashed a barrage of vicious attacks on Kamala Harris, absurdly questioning her Black identity (she is indeed Black). And his hostility toward Black journalists asking tough questions is also nothing new. That was not the case on Wednesday at the NABJ conference. Ms. Harris told The Washington Post in 2019 that she had long been comfortable with her racial identity. Ms. Harris joined Alpha Kappa Alpha, a sorority for Black women, at Howard University, a historically Black university. Ms. Harris failed California’s bar exam on her first attempt in July 1989, according to her autobiography, and received a letter in November that she had failed, “to my utter devastation.” While she did not address her subsequent exams in the book, Ms. Harris was admitted to the bar in June 1990. Mr. Trump is taking outsize credit. It is also worth noting that Mr. Trump did not request the increased funding that the schools received.

In an unusual move, a British court on Thursday named the 17-year-old suspect in a stabbing rampage that left three children dead and eight injured in northwestern England early this week. The suspect, Axel Muganwa Rudakubana, appeared in a court in Liverpool to face three counts of murder, 10 counts of attempted murder, and possession of a bladed article. Although the police said repeatedly that the suspect had been born in Cardiff, Wales, misinformation spread rapidly on social media claiming that he was an undocumented immigrant. The proliferation of those erroneous reports persuaded the judge, Andrew Menary, to lift the typical restrictions on the news media’s ability to report the identity of an underage suspect. “Continuing to prevent the full reporting has the disadvantage of allowing others to spread misinformation, in a vacuum,” Judge Menary said, according to the Press Association.

I think it’s totally reasonable for the president to call that out, and that’s all he did,” Vance said. Trump’s remarks are false – Harris, who was born in Oakland, California, and attended the historically Black Howard University in Washington, has never downplayed her racial identity. “And I think it’s because bad guys all over the world recognize Donald Trump’s about to be back in office, so they’re cleaning house. It would not have solved any of the problems that Kamala Harris has caused.”He said the Biden administration should instead take executive action. “They just need to empower Border Patrol to tell people who want to come in illegally, ‘You’re not allowed to do that.’ They just need to use the authority that the border czar, Kamala Harris, has.”

When former President Donald J. Trump questioned Vice President Kamala Harris’s racial identity on Wednesday, he lifted a longstanding and false line of attack from the fringes of political discourse to the very center of a presidential campaign. For years, rivals and critics have lodged accusations that Ms. Harris shifts her personal identity to her political advantage, and that she is, in fact, not who she claims to be. Those attacks, based on falsehoods, misinformation and conspiratorial notions, have increased dramatically in the week and a half since she emerged as the Democrats’ all-but-certain standard-bearer. Just hours after President Biden announced that he would not seek a second term, the right-wing agitator Laura Loomer posted on the social media site X that Ms. Harris “pretends to be black” as part of what she called a “delusional, Democrat DEI quota.”The next day, Tucker Carlson, the former Fox News host who spoke at the Republican National Convention last month, said on his popular interview show that the vice president was “sort of Black, sort of Indian.” The rapper Lil Pump, a Trump supporter who has some 20 million followers across Instagram, TikTok and X, said on Sunday that “Kamala Harris isn’t even black…she’s Indian.”

Mr. Trump’s combative and disrespectful appearance before an audience of Black journalists displayed the decades-old obsession with racial identity that helped catapult him into national prominence and that continues to define his appeal to the prejudices of some of his most loyal supporters. Disparaging his opponents’ name, appearance, intelligence and gender has always been Mr. Trump’s signature weapon in his grievance-dominated political career. Roger HirschbergSouth Burlington, Vt.To the Editor:Donald Trump’s appearance at the National Association of Black Journalists was a huge success — for him. In trademark fashion, he made outrageous comments not to persuade but to change the focus from the surging candidacy of Kamala Harris onto him. It worked when he questioned Barack Obama’s birth certificate, as it is working now with his questioning of Kamala Harris’s racial identity.

When former President Donald J. Trump questioned Vice President Kamala Harris’s racial identity in Chicago on Wednesday, he neglected a reality: that the country’s demographics have changed in recent decades, as more than 12 percent of Americans now identify as multiracial. Beneath that fact is another, lesser-known shift. They are part of a jump in multiracial Americans that demographers have tracked for decades, a marked rise that reflects the steadily increasing diversity of the U.S. population. The numbers of Latino and Asian people have risen sharply since the 1990s, and so has the rate of marriage between people of different races. This has resulted in more multiracial children.

Just hours after former President Donald J. Trump made false assertions about her racial identity, Vice President Kamala Harris had an extraordinary opportunity to respond. With careful precision, the vice president acknowledged his statements, made at the annual meeting of the National Association of Black Journalists, and condemned his behavior. But although she often casts herself as a fighter eager to confront Mr. Trump, she showed restraint on Wednesday, refusing to engage in a debate with a white man critiquing her Blackness. “It was the same old show,” she said. And let me just say, the American people deserve better.”

Donald J. Trump continued to raise false and incendiary questions about Vice President Kamala Harris’s racial identity for a second day on Thursday, as Republicans watched the former president drive his campaign into a divisive and potentially damaging direction. A day after telling an audience of Black journalists in Chicago that Ms. Harris had “all of a sudden” decided to become “a Black person,” Mr. Trump posted a photo on his social media site of Ms. Harris dressed in a sari with a caption stating: “Your warmth, friendship, and love of your Indian Heritage are very much appreciated.”Mr. Trump also amplified posts from Laura Loomer, a right-wing activist, who had posted copies of Ms. Harris’s birth certificate and had spread false accusations that Ms. Harris has lied about her race. Ms. Harris, whose father is from Jamaica, and whose mother was Indian American, has long identified with both her Black and South Asian heritage.

Wednesday’s interview-turned-confrontation with reporters at a convention of Black journalists in Chicago made perfectly clear that nothing has changed. Trump’s remarks, he told donors in Maine Wednesday, put on display “a worse version of an already horrible person.”But he also cautioned against focusing too narrowly on the former president’s words. His reaction – his attack on Harris – was largely unprompted and strayed from the reporters’ line of questioning. North Dakota Sen. Kevin Cramer took a different tack, dismissing Trump’s remarks as “satire,” but also suggesting it was “not wise” politically to raise the issue. He promised he’s gonna have a woman of color.”Biden pledged to choose a woman as his running mate in 2020, not a woman of color.

Many people consume alcohol to relax and relieve stress, which are some of the top reasons people travel, too. How is sober travel discussed on TikTok? Sentiment in the past year shows that among social media interactions 32% is positive, 38% is neutral and 30% is negative. The ranking, however, isn't a list of countries where alcohol sales are banned — places like Brunei, Saudi Arabia and Iran. Costa Rica ranked high on the list of "sober travel" destinations, in part, because of its outdoor activities and national parks.

Rather than condemn his party’s increasingly troubling language on the topic, Mr. Trump took the opportunity to question Ms. Harris’s racial identity. “She was always of Indian heritage, and she was only promoting Indian heritage,” he said. “I didn’t know she was Black, until a number of years ago, when she happened to turn Black, and now she wants to be known as Black.
