A Hurricane Milton tornado tore through a Florida retirement community Wednesday, killing multiple residents and leaving a level of destruction not seen locally for decades, officials said. Four people died in St. Lucie County, on Florida’s east coast, and more than one of those fatalities came at the Spanish Lakes Country Club Village, a neighborhood designed for residents 55 and older, county spokesman Erick Gill said. “I can’t confirm that all of them [the four deaths] were from the Spanish Lakes neighborhood that was hardest hit,” Gill told NBC News. “I’ve worked for St. Lucie County for 21 years. “We’re not going to stop until we double-check, triple-check to make sure that anyone in there that needs to be rescued is rescued,” St. Lucie County Sheriff Keith Pearson said in a video message to the community.

Davis Jones looks out the door of the hotel where he is riding out Hurricane Milton, in Tampa, Florida on October 9, 2024. Julio Cortez/APThough authorities and meteorologists had feared Tampa would bear the heaviest brunt of Hurricane Milton, it appears the city has avoided the kind of devastating 15-foot storm surge that had been forecast, said CNN Correspondent Brian Todd. “I’ve never really seen sheets and walls of water coming down from a hurricane,” he said, speaking from Tampa. Now, several hours after Milton first made landfall, the eye of the storm has moved east through central Florida. Earlier in the night, the storm pushed the water out of Tampa Bay, leaving it looking almost like “a dry riverbed,” he added.

Ron DeSantis and Vice President Kamala Harris over hurricane recovery before he praised him as “gracious” in a news conference Wednesday, a source familiar with the situation said. NBC News first reported Monday that DeSantis refused to take Harris’ call when she reached out about Hurricane Helene’s impact on Florida. A reporter then asked Biden whether DeSantis should be taking Harris’ phone calls. CNN —Two federal judges have rejected requests to immediately reopen voter registration in Georgia and Florida as the southeast continues to grapple with significant storm damage ahead of the November election. Brian Kemp and Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger — both of whom are Republicans — argued there would be a significant “administrative burden” on the state’s elections offices if the voter registration deadline were to be extended. Ron DeSantis told reporters that there’s “nothing inhibiting” unregistered voters from registering ahead of the deadline later that day. But we’re not going to change any registration deadline. You can register today, and there doesn’t need to – there’s no reason to open that up,” the governor said.

Hurricane Milton is battering Florida days after Hurricane Helene wreaked havoc on several states. The two events are the latest sign that hurricanes are becoming more frequent, more ferocious, and more costly. They're also hitting employment and economic growth, at least in the short term. They estimated that a Category 5 storm could lower fourth-quarter annualized GDP growth by 0.14 percentage points, from a forecasted 2.3% to below 2.2%. "Rebuilding should provide a boost to economic activity in those affected regions in subsequent months, and potentially years," Sweet told BI, quoting from his recent note.

As myths about Milton and Helene spread, interest in chemtrails increased too on Google search and social media. Despite the lack of evidence to support it, the so-called chemtrail conspiracy theory has endured for decades. Some of the promotion of the conspiracy theory has taken on a distinctively antisemitic tone. Peters previously promoted the unhinged conspiracy theory that ballots were flown from Asia as part of a plot to steal the 2020 election from President Trump. Friedrich suggested the conspiracy theories blaming weather manipulation for the devastation caused by Hurricanes Helene and Milton is a way to distract from the real effects of climate change.

Oil prices rise on Israel-Iran conflict fears and U.S. storm

Oil prices rose in early Asian trade on Thursday on concerns about potential supply disruptions in the Middle East, with Israel planning to strike oil-producer Iran, and on spikes in fuel demand as a major storm barreled into Florida. The world's largest oil producer and consumer has been hit by a second major storm, Hurricane Milton, which made landfall on Florida's west coast, spawning tornadoes and threatening surges of seawater. The storm has already driven up demand for gasoline in the state, with about a quarter of fuel stations selling out of supplies, which has helped support crude prices. Further underpinning prices, investors remained wary of a potential escalation in tensions between Israel and Iran, with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant promising an Israeli strike against Iran would be "lethal, precise and surprising". Even with threats to the oil-producing Middle Eastern region top of mind, weak demand continues to underpin the fundamental outlook.

That was far different from on X, which previously used to be the best place to get live news.

President Trump — former President Trump — get a life, man. But, he warned, it has only been hours since Hurricane Milton made landfall and it was still too early to fully assess damages across the state. “Vice President Harris and I have been in constant contact with state and local officials,” the president added. Federal officials warned that in some cases the rumors are designed to prevent people who need help from seeking it. Biden has also spoken with numerous other lawmakers, including staunch Trump supporter and Florida Republican Rep. Anna Paulina Luna and Florida Republican Sen. Rick Scott.

This rapid spend rate is a reflection of just how many earlier disasters the agency is dealing with in addition to Milton and Helene. Here’s what to know:How did FEMA spend $9 billion so quickly? That gave FEMA about $20 billion worth of funding to tap into as it responded to Helene and Milton. “In August, we had paused obligations for recovery projects for all of those other open disasters,” Criswell told reporters. Last year, the US had a record 23 disasters costing at least $1 billion by September – with 28 such disasters in the calendar year, the most ever recorded.

Hurricane Milton made landfall late on Florida's West Coast Wednesday night as a Category 3 hurricane. Though downgraded from earlier forecasts, the storm still produced multiple tornadoes and caused major flooding throughout the Florida Peninsula. Local and federal governments urged residents to evacuate, but not everyone had the resources or ability to escape the storm's path. Residents in some affected areas are still recovering from Hurricane Helene, which left at least 220 people dead earlier this month. As recovery efforts get underway, these organizations are providing assistance to those affected by the storm.
