The FBI said Sunday that the shooter at Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania acted alone and that it is still actively investigating the shooter’s background – including working to gain access to his phone. “We are working to get access to the phone,” Kevin Rojek, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Pittsburgh field office, said Sunday. Rojek confirmed the gun used in the shooting was an AR-style rifle that was purchased legally. FBI Deputy Director Paul Abbate also said the FBI is “seeing that tick up in the aftermath of this event. “The violence we saw yesterday is an attack on democracy itself,” Garland said.

"This counter-sniper made an amazingly quick decision and clearly saved Trump's life," said Bill Pickle, the former special agent in charge of Al Gore's vice-presidential Secret Service detail. The Secret Service has advance teams that scope out sites and make staffing recommendations ahead of major events, one expert said. The CS team returned fire, long-gun-toting counter-assault agents in black jumpsuits and helmets rushed the stage, and business-suited agents on the rally platform hurried Trump off stage. "The worst nightmare for the Secret Service has always been a lone gunman who hasn't been announcing his views publicly and is ready to die."

CNN —A local police officer saw the gunman on the rooftop during former President Donald Trump’s Pennsylvania rally on Saturday but was unable to engage him, Butler County Sheriff Michael T. Slupe told CNN’s Pamela Brown on Sunday. Slupe said that Butler Township officers received calls about a suspicious person outside the perimeter of the rally and went looking to find that person. The initial calls did not indicate the suspicious person had a gun, he said. During the search for the suspicious person, officers with township police discovered that the gunman was on the roof, and one local officer hoisted another to get up to the ledge. Had he known there were any threats of a gunman, Slupe said, he would have done “everything to stop him (Trump) from coming out.”

CNN —The dramatic dismissal of the involuntary manslaughter case against actor Alec Baldwin over withheld evidence could mean the release of convicted “Rust” movie armorer Hannah Gutierrez Reed from a New Mexico state prison, legal experts say. But the Baldwin case imploded on Friday – just two days after the trial began – with the sudden and shocking twists and turns of a nail-biting legal thriller. “I fully expect Hannah Gutierrez Reed to make the same argument for her conviction to be overturned,” Neama Rahmani, a former federal prosecutor, told CNN. Her ruling regarding the failure to disclose the ammunition should carry significant weight in the Gutierrez Reed case, CNN legal analyst Joey Jackson said. Hannah Gutierrez Reed will go free as well.

Donald Trump will arrive at the 2024 Republican convention — his Republican convention, finally and completely, without the dissent of 2016 or the pandemic that overshadowed 2020 — closer than ever to a second term. But the likelihood of a Trump restoration has not yet brought clarity about what it would actually usher in. With Trump there is always the whipsaw, the forays toward normalcy and the reversion to a darker mean. Asked on the debate stage whether he would spend a second term seeking revenge on his political enemies, he promised that “my retribution is going to be success. Instead there are Trumpist scenarios and Trumpian personae — whose interactions, if he wins, will give his second term its shape.

However, the technician testified the items were catalogued separately from Baldwin’s case and were not included in the “Rust” case inventory or tested to see if they matched the lethal round. Baldwin’s team argued prosecutors did not properly disclose this evidence to the defense and asked for the case to be dismissed. In response, prosecutor Kari Morrissey said investigators determined the ammunition was not a match to those found on the “Rust” set and had no evidentiary value to the case. The judge has ordered additional witnesses to testify before she renders a ruling on Baldwin’s motion to dismiss the case. At opening statements Wednesday, prosecutors alleged Baldwin was reckless with firearms on set and violated the “cardinal rules of firearm safety” with his actions.

It went far beyond what even the most pessimistic court observers expected; the dissenters, if anything, responded with restraint.) “Nobody’s suggesting that.” (Reality check: That is precisely what Idaho was suggesting, by arguing that federal law doesn’t pre-empt the state ban.) “Some courts have misunderstood the methodology of our recent Second Amendment cases,” the chief justice wrote, explaining why the lower court had been wrong. For a gun law to be compatible with the Second Amendment, the decision said, the government “must demonstrate that the regulation is consistent with this nation’s historical tradition of firearm regulation.” In other words, if the American founders didn’t pass a specific gun law in the 18th century, then we in the 21st century can’t either.

NRA lawyers pointed to his sudden, mid-trial resignation as welcomed proof of a "course correction." The NRA also hasn't ruled out the possibility of paying for LaPierre's continued legal fees, James' lawyers said. Biden, for his part, came off as chastened during the news conference and was less defiant than in previous appearances. The leader of a New York City suburb is recruiting 75 armed citizens, many of them former police officers, for a force of “special deputies” to be activated whenever he chooses. Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, a Republican who has allied himself with former President Donald J. Trump and thrust himself into the culture wars, posted a call in March for residents with gun permits and an interest in becoming “provisional emergency special deputy sheriffs.”The posting called the initiative a strategy to assist in the “protection of human life and property during an emergency” such as a hurricane or blackout — and perhaps, Mr. Blakeman later added, “a riot.”The new force has drawn vocal opposition in this well-to-do Long Island county, which is one of the country’s safest, protected by one of the largest police departments. It has plunged Nassau into a national debate about authoritarianism in an election season that some see as a fork in the road for American democracy.
