He said access to investing can help solve this conundrum, while also pondering if the expectation for everyone to receive Social Security benefits at age 65 has become archaic. Worsening the outlook is a Social Security system that's said it will not be able to pay full benefits by 2034. The 71-year-old believes the American retirement system has entered such a deep crisis that it has become a once-in-a-generation issue. That's because this both can benefit individuals and help ensure the long-term health of Social Security. Increasing lifespans create further difficulties when trying to improve the retirement system, Fink said.

His only other insurance cost is renters insurance for his apartment, since he receives free health insurance through the state. More people over 65 are working as pensions disappear, people live longer, and Social Security benefits are seemingly always in peril. Business Insider spoke with several Americans of retirement age about why they are still trading their time for money. "I think older people become very invisible, and maybe it's going to take other older people to help heighten that visibility." On average, Americans who have pensions receive $25,000 annually from them; the average estimated annual Social Security benefit is $38,418 for 2024. Indeed, BI's analysis of retirement data has found that nearly 80% of retirees have Social Security income.

In 2019, Urias-Roy and her husband started URATX, a delivery service based in Austin that uses independent contractors for large food deliveries, such as catering orders. The problem these stores had was that they were getting a lot of business orders, but drivers weren't equipped to handle it. That basically allowed me to start a delivery business instead of working as a contractor for the big apps or local delivery services. Who will buy TikTok from ByteDance?
  + stars: | 2024-03-14 | by ( Allison Morrow | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
At $100 billion, there are few companies that could afford to buy TikTok outright. Citing people familiar with the matter, the Journal wrote that Kotick “floated the idea of partnering to buy TikTok to a table of people that included OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.”CNN couldn’t independently confirm the report. Its one go at the social media scene, the buggy and short-lived Ping, was one of Apple’s biggest flops. And any tech executive or private equity investor thinking of buying TikTok would need to be prepared to enter the social media quagmire. A key question in assessing the value of a TikTok deal is whether China would allow ByteDance to export its algorithm — the secret sauce that keeps TikTok users glued to their phones.

Facial recognition frequently misidentifies people of colorMIT Media Lab researcher Joy Buolamwini found that facial recognition technology misidentified black women up to 35% of the time, the New York Times reported in 2018. When fewer photos of people from other racial and gender groups are used, facial recognition tech is less accurate at identifying people of those backgrounds, the study said. In some cases, it's possible to opt out of using facial recognition technology — and its high error rate. But sidestepping facial recognition often isn't possible, said Gideon Christian, a law professor at the University of Calgary who has written about the legal and societal aspects of facial recognition technology. One of the leading emerging use cases for artificial intelligence could be automating customer support requests, according to Barclays. At a time when some investors are beginning to doubt the AI momentum, some companies are now experimenting with AI for customer support and consumer-facing features. These support levels involve escalations from solving simple customer service problems, and can entail trouble-shooting with support technicians and the involvement of engineers, if needed. Lyft stands to be the biggest beneficiary of AI automating customer support requests, assuming that it can move just over a third of its Level 2 and 3 human-based customer service requests to AI. To be sure, it's still early days for companies that could benefit from deploying AI as part of their customer support, Barclays found.
