House Republicans keep calling it quits, even though they're in the majority. Republican Rep. Mike Gallagher of Wisconsin announced his retirement on Friday after facing backlash over his vote against it. But like other retiring Republicans, they've apparently decided it's just not worth it. Taking those factors into account, you're left with eight retiring Democrats and 15 retiring Republicans. — that I can go campaign on and say we did," said Republican Rep. Chip Roy of Texas in a November floor speech.

LONDON (AP) — Before there was John and Yoko — and after — there was just Yoko Ono. Yet that period forms just a small part of an exhibition opening this week at the Tate Modern gallery in London. One of the largest shows of Ono’s work ever mounted, it includes seven decades of work by the artist, who turns 91 on Sunday. In her landmark 1964 performance “Cut Piece,” she gave gallery visitors scissors and invited them to snip away at her clothes. For an exhibition at New York’s Museum of Modern Art in the 1970s, Ono falsely claimed to have released hundreds of flies soaked in perfume for gallery visitors to find.

Two climate activists on Tuesday targeted Botticelli’s masterpiece “The Birth of Venus” hanging at Florence’s Uffizi Gallery, attaching images of recent flood damage in the Tuscany region on the protective glass. Authorities immediately cleared the room and the two protesters were brought by carabinieri for questioning. Under a new law, the protesters risk up to six months of jail time. The protest materials were easily removed from the glass without leaving a trace, and the room where the painting hangs was reopened within 15 minutes. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.

Johnson isn't buying arguments from the bill's Republican backers that she didn't inspire the proposed change to a longstanding law. Republican state lawmakers who favor the ban have argued that winning twice often means abandoning the lower office, creating a costly special election. Johnson narrowly escaped expulsion last year for her role in a pro-gun control protest inside the Tennessee House chamber. Republican lawmakers are considering changes that target Jones and Pearson, too. In California, a judge ruled Republican state Assemblymember Vince Fong could run for Congress and reelection to his state seat at the same time.

CNN —Countless creative ideas have been born in the kitchen of Charleston House, the bohemian modernist farmhouse inhabited from 1916 by painters Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell in a rural part of southern England. Courtesy Osman Yousefzada“What I do is try and tell working class stories in highbrow institutional spaces,” Yousefzada told CNN in a phone interview. “Even now, generations on, Charleston is still a very aspirational and very privileged space, but I try and subvert that.., to open the space for working class voices,” said Yousefzada. “A warning, caution.”"Unless you're signposted that having a creative life is OK, it's not an easy path to take," said Yousefzada. I grew up in a restricted monoculture and so it took me a long time to find those (artistic) spaces.

Brazilian police investigating the murder of Brent Sikkema, a prominent New York art dealer who was found stabbed to death last month in his Rio de Janeiro apartment, are now seeking the arrest of his husband, Daniel Sikkema. It was a shocking twist in a case that has captivated the art world. WINSLOW, Maine (AP) — Peyton Brewer-Ross was the life of the party, with wraparound sunglasses and an outlandish Randy “Macho Man” Savage Slim Jim jacket. Brewer-Ross, one of the 18 people killed in the deadliest mass shooting in Maine history, was remembered during a weekend art exhibit dubbed, “There Goes My Hero: Chapter One: Peyton Brewer-Ross.” The 40-year-old was playing cornhole with friends when he was gunned down on Oct. 25 in Lewiston. “Twin Flames: The George Floyd Uprising from Minneapolis to Phoenix" features about 500 artifacts that protesters and mourners left at the intersection of 38th Street and Chicago Avenue, where Floyd was killed. The George Floyd Global Memorial is hopeful of bringing the exhibit to other cities after it leaves Phoenix in July, but there are no plans yet. Other museums around the country are also delving into themes explored at the ASU Art Museum. In Louisville, Kentucky, the Speed Art Museum last year honored the life of Breonna Taylor, who was killed by police officers there after they illegally entered her apartment in March 2020. “Our purpose is to be able to create spaces that remind people that the work is not over,” said Austin, the director of the George Floyd Global Memorial.

The proposal is in response to a Nashville elementary school shooting where a shooter killed six people including three children last year. To date, the Republican-dominant Legislature has rebuffed calls to enforce stricter gun control measures in response to the shooting. Bill Lee called in the wake of the tragedy at The Covenant School, but the Senate refused to consider the bill. As House members debated the bill, families whose children survived the shooting at The Covenant School stood in the front row of the public gallery. CNN —Two decades ago, the photographer David LaChapelle staged apocalyptic scenes for the pages of “Vogue Italia” — images that proved so controversial that they nearly became his final editorial shoot. The Vogue Italia editorial was photographed before Hurricane Katrina, but published shortly after the natural disaster. “Some people thought that they (the photographs) were exploitive of Katrina,” LaChapelle said; among the glamorized ruins and designer shoes showcased, one image in particular featured models handing off sandbags. Now, though, “The House at the End of the World,” has become an important touchstone in LaChapelle’s portfolio. The end of the world will not be glamorous, but the urgency of his work has come to pass.

"Ultimately, I spent more time home alone doing nothing than ever before," Epstein, CEO of the still-in-beta social networking app Kndrd, told Business Insider. "I spoke to a thousand strangers" — many who also felt a lack of community, companionship, or friendship, she added. But while investors may want to see viral, overnight growth for an app like Kndrd, Epstein hesitates at that strategy. In the future, Kndrd also plans to incorporate AI into its user experience — something on nearly every investor's mind right now.

While Jackson’s transformation was a savvy collaboration with makeup brand CoverFx, temporary tattoo camouflage has snowballed as an essential celebrity makeup technique. While shooting the Disney+ series “The Bear,” Jeremy Allen White required extensive tattoo coverage (and temporary tattoo re-application) that would withstand filming for hours in a hot kitchen. Paris Jackson was a blank canvas on the red carpet after her makeup artists spent two hours camouflaging her 80 tattoos, shown on the right. Elsewhere on the red carpet, while Rey and Jackson were disguising their ink, Doja Cat (who scooped three awards this season) went face-first into the world of — albeit temporary — tattoos. SARAJEVO (Reuters) - The trial of Bosnian Serb separatist leader Milorad Dodik on charges of defying the rulings of an international peace envoy formally begun on Monday after delays due to his protests against judges he said were biased and other complaints. The trial is taking place at Bosnia´s state court in the capital Sarajevo. The state court dismissed Bubic's earlier requests for eight judges to be exempted from the case over alleged political biases against Dodik. Asked if he has understood the indictment, Dodik said he did not understand any part of it and that it represented a "distortion of facts". "It has not been backed by a single fact, it was done under political pressure by incompetent prosecutors," Dodik told the judge.
