Canada have qualified for the quarterfinals of the Olympic women’s soccer competition — despite the defending champions being deducted six points for spying on opponents earlier in the group stage. Canada were deducted six points by FIFA for flying a drone over opponents New Zealand’s training sessions ahead of the Games, and a wider spying scandal subsequently emerged. The points deduction was handed down ahead of the second group fixture against France, leaving Canada on minus three points in Group A and on the cusp of elimination. British oil giant BP on Tuesday reported stronger-than-expected net profit for the second quarter and raised its dividend despite previously warning of significantly lower refining margins. The oil and gas major posted underlying replacement cost profit, used as a proxy for net profit, of $2.8 billion for the second quarter. BP reported net profit of $2.7 billion for the first three months of the year and $2.6 billion for the second quarter of 2023. At a Berlin trade fair for sustainability, a new gadget caught Waltraud Berg’s eye — a solar panel small enough to be easily installed on the side of a balcony and then plugged into a wall socket to feed energy produced by the sun directly into her home. “I was absolutely thrilled to learn that such a thing even existed, that you can generate your own power and be more independent,” said Ms. Berg, a retiree who installed several panels on the south-facing balcony of her Berlin apartment by herself. Each of the lightweight panels produces only enough electricity to charge a laptop or run a small refrigerator. But in homes across Germany, they are powering a quiet transformation, bringing the green revolution into the hands of people without requiring them to make a large investment, find an electrician or use heavy tools.
