Cluster munitions scatter “bomblets” across large areas, which can endanger noncombatants, and these unexploded bombs, called duds, can pose a risk to civilians for decades. Gen. Patrick Ryder said the Russians have been using cluster munitions with a dud rate as high as 40%. But one nation, and one nation only, gets to determine whether to use cluster munitions on its land — Ukraine. Ukrainians deserve everything we can give them — yes, especially cluster munitions — to save their families. President Joe Biden made the right call on cluster munitions for Ukraine and he should be commended for this difficult but necessary decision.

June 29 (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday struck down race-conscious student admissions programs at Harvard University and the University of North Carolina in a sharp setback to affirmative action policies often used to increase the number of Black, Hispanic and other underrepresented minority groups on campuses. The decision, powered by the court's conservative justices with the liberal justices in dissent, was 6-3 against the University of North Carolina and 6-2 against Harvard. The dispute presented the Supreme Court's conservative majority an opportunity to overturn its prior rulings allowing race-conscious admissions policies. Affirmative action has withstood Supreme Court scrutiny for decades, most recently in a 2016 ruling involving a white student, backed by Blum, who sued the University of Texas after being rejected for admission. June 5 (Reuters) - The Biden administration has asked a federal judge to toss out a lawsuit by Republican-led states seeking to strike down a rule allowing socially-conscious investing by employee retirement plans. The states moved last month for a ruling permanently blocking the rule, which took effect Jan. 30. The Biden administration on Friday said the rule makes clear that retirement plans must base decisions primarily on financial factors. But unlike the Trump-era rule, it also recognizes that issues such as climate change and social justice can impact companies' long-term financial health, the Justice Department said. The judge in March rejected the Biden administration's claim that the states were improperly "judge shopping" by filing the lawsuit in Amarillo, where Kacsmaryk is the only judge.

WASHINGTON, June 2 (Reuters) - The U.S. Department of Justice has closed its investigation into former Vice President Mike Pence without filing any charges related to classified documents found in his Indiana home, a department official said on Friday. The department notified Pence through a letter, the official added. Representatives for Pence, who served under former Republican President Donald Trump, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Pence's spokesman has said the former vice president has "fully cooperated" with the probe and Pence himself has publicly acknowledged what he called a mistake. A Justice Department special counsel, Jack Smith, is investigating Trump's handling of classified materials since leaving office in January 2021.

WASHINGTON, June 2 (Reuters) - A Georgia-based probe into whether former Republican President Donald Trump and others illegally sought to overturn his loss in the state's 2020 presidential election has expanded into activities outside of Georgia, the Washington Post reported on Friday. As part of the probe into Trump and his allies efforts, Willis's office has sought information from Simpatico Software Systems and Berkeley Research Group about their actions in Georgia and other U.S. states, the Post said. The companies declined to comment to the Post as did Willis' office and representatives for Trump. The Department of Justice is also investigating Trump's role in efforts to overturn his 2020 loss to Democrat Joe Biden. A number of individuals under investigation in the Fulton County probe have accepted immunity deals, court records showed last month.
