Birkenstock, the longtime German shoe brand known for its comfy and durable styles, is expected to price its IPO at $46 per share on Tuesday, giving it a tentative valuation of about $8.64 billion, according to a person familiar with the matter. Combined with the 21.51 million in shares its selling stockholders were looking to offload, the offering could bring in around $1.48 billion. Birkenstock's offering comes as the IPO market remains choppy after a number of recent filers began trading in muted debuts. But after an initial 40% pop, it closed at $33.70 on its first day on the Nasdaq and is now trading below its opening share price. It posted a net income of about 187 million euros ($198 million) in fiscal 2022.

Birkenstock has set a price for its initial public offering of stock that values the 249-year-old German maker of upmarket sandals at $8.64 billion. It is due to start trading Wednesday on the New York Stock Exchange under the “BIRK” ticker symbol. Birkenstock Holding Ltd. sold about 10.8 million shares in the offering, raising about $495 million. The company's footwear was first cobbled together by Johann Adam Birkenstock in Germany in 1774. There were just 71 IPOs in the U.S. last year, the lowest number since 2009, according to Renaissance Capital.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Highly pathogenic bird flu has made its first appearances in U.S. commercial poultry flocks this season, affecting one turkey farm in South Dakota and one in Utah. The outbreaks are the first reported among commercial flocks in the U.S. since the disease struck two turkey farms in the Dakotas in April. While wild birds often show no symptoms of avian influenza, infections in them are a concern to the poultry industry because migrating birds can spread the disease to vulnerable commercial flocks. South Dakota producers lost nearly 4 million birds last year. Iowa, the hardest-hit state, with nearly 16 million birds lost, hasn't recorded a case since March.

Birkenstock would end up raising $1.58 billion at the top of the range. While shares of Arm and Klaviyo still trade above their IPO price, Instacart's stock is now worth less than its IPO value. This helps explain why Birkenstock is not inclined to raise its IPO price range despite the strong initial investor demand. To leave less to chance, Birkenstock launched the roadshow for its IPO last week with some investors lined up. Birkenstock was founded in 1774 in the German village of Langen-Bergheim by Johannes Birkenstock and his younger brother Johann Adam Birkenstock, who were both shoemakers.

Revo Foods is the first company to sell 3D-printed vegan salmon fillets, now available in Europe. The foodtech startup Revo Foods in September became the first company to sell 3D-printed vegan salmon filets in select grocery stores in Vienna, Austria, and opened an online shop that ships the product to most European countries this month. "It flakes very nicely into layers just like salmon," Robin Simsa, the CEO of Revo Foods, told Insider. Over the past several weeks, Simsa said Revo Foods' vegan salmon has sold out within hours of hitting store shelves. Revo Foods sells 130 grams, or about 4 ½ ounces, of its vegan salmon for 7 euros, or about $7.

A pair of shoes is pictured in a window of a Birkenstock footwear store in Berlin, Germany, January 21, 2021. Birkenstock is the latest high-profile listing to put investor focus on the initial public offering (IPO) market, which is gradually reopening after two relatively quiet years and a burst of activity in September. Due to recent price hikes, worldwide footwear sales are expected to rise just 2.9% over 2022, according to market research firm Euromonitor International. AllBirds (BIRD.O), Dr Martens (DOCS.L), and On Running (ONON.N) have all seen their market value fall since their IPOs in 2021. "When you look at the trend of other shoe companies that have IPO-ed, it doesn't give a great outlook for Birkenstock," Valechha said.

That thought was echoed by Cleveland Fed chief Loretta Mester, who said: "I suspect we may well need to raise the fed funds rate once more this year." Either way, this is not the sound of a Fed who thinks the inflation battle is won. Workers using OpenAI's ChatGPT may actually perform more poorly than those who don't, new BCG research finds. AdvertisementAdvertisementIf you're using ChatGPT as a shortcut at work, you may want to be extra careful. For tasks "inside the frontier," consultants using AI were "significantly more productive" and "produced significantly higher quality results" than those who weren't using the chatbot. BCG's findings demonstrate a cautionary tale for workers thinking about using ChatGPT to help do their jobs. AI-generated errors may only get worse: In a recent paper, AI researchers found that generative AI models could soon be trained on AI-generated content — a phenomenon they call "model collapse."

Birkenstock, the German premium footwear brand backed by private-equity firm L Catterton, said on Monday it is seeking a valuation of up to $9.2 billion in its highly anticipated initial public offering (IPO) in New York. The U.S. securities regulator is well-staffed now that a government shutdown has been averted, allowing it to review IPO filings by companies looking to take advantage of the long-awaited reopening of the IPO window. On its website, the company says all elements of its design - the buckles, the straps, the sole and the footbed - have a "functional purpose". Most of its products are manufactured in facilities in Rhineland-Palatinate, North Rhine-Westphalia, Hesse and Saxony in Germany. Goldman Sachs, J.P. Morgan and Morgan Stanley are among the underwriters for the IPO.

CNN —New analysis has identified the oldest shoes ever discovered in Europe, according to a study published this week in the journal Science Advances. The ancient footwear, along with Mesolithic baskets and other tools, was first discovered back in 1857, when a cave in southern Spain was looted by miners. The sandals were made of grasses as well as other materials, including leather, lime and ramie bast, a type of natural fiber. Using the descriptions provided by Góngora, the study hypothesizes that the bodies were buried wearing the sandals. The first phase was related to the Early Holocene hunter-gatherer populations, and the second phase to Middle Holocene farmers, researchers said.

Nike on Thursday estimated a 100 basis point boost to current-quarter gross margin while maintaining its annual forecasts. The jump also lifted shares of Adidas, Puma and JD Sports (JD.L) between 5%-7%. Still, demand in North America remained under pressure, leading Nike to post a slight miss on first-quarter revenue.

Birkenstock believes it can obtain the final sign-off from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission even during a shutdown when the financial regulator would operate with only essential staff, the sources said. SEC Chair Gary Gensler said on Wednesday that a shutdown would reduce his agency's staffing to "skeletal" levels, blocking it from approving companies' IPO filings and hindering the agency's ability to respond to any market turmoil. An SEC spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Birkenstock's IPO plans. Companies less advanced in their IPO preparations, including healthcare software vendor Waystar, healthcare services firm Brightspring and car-sharing platform Turo, could be affected by a government shutdown. They did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
