The United States has announced new export controls on advanced technology, including quantum computers, in line with restrictions imposed by international partners. Besides quantum computing items, the curbs will affect equipment for producing advanced semiconductors, additive manufacturing items to produce metal components and gate all-around field-effect transistor (GAAFET) technology, according to a Federal Register posting. Several countries, including the United Kingdom, have already imposed similar controls, and others are expected to do so as well. “The most significant controls are the ones on quantum computers and related technology,” said Washington trade lawyer Kevin Wolf. But, she said, small companies may decide, “we don’t want to have to figure out this reporting.

LONDON — Britain's competition watchdog on Friday issued a statement of objections over Google's ad tech practices, which the regulator provisionally found are impacting competition in the U.K. In a statement, the Competition and Markets Authority alleged that the U.S. internet search titan "has harmed competition by using its dominance in online display advertising to favour its own ad tech services." The CMA further noted that Google disadvantages ad technology competitors, preventing them from competing on a "level playing field." "Many businesses are able to keep their digital content free or cheaper by using online advertising to generate revenue. The core of this case rests on flawed interpretations of the ad tech sector."

Historically, women's healthcare has been impaired by challenges like bias and a lack of specialized providers. For years, healthcare systems weren't designed for women, and there are still gaps in research and treatments for women's health issues. AdvertisementWith this reality in mind, Joanna Strober cofounded Midi Health, a website designed to help people experiencing menopause and perimenopause access specialists. Interventions can range from lifestyle coaching to prescription medication, and Midi providers can refer patients to in-person treatments when needed. Midi Health is on its way toward doing that; the company closed a $60 million Series B round in April.

They found that registration for Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders increased by 43%, from 550,682 to 787,982 voters. However, things changed in 2020 when Asian Americans had a significant double-digit increase in presidential election turnout. Ramakrishnan pointed out that since the data set ended before Vice President Kamala Harris entered the race, it’s likely that the increase in Asian American voter registration is even more dramatic. “We’re seeing this more generally, regardless of race and ethnicity, but especially what I’ve seen is among younger voters, among female voters, voter registration has gone up significantly in the last month,” he said. “I would expect the Harris candidacy to also drive higher voter registration and higher voter interest among Asian Americans.”For more from NBC Asian America, sign up for our weekly newsletter.

"Nature-based carbon removals, such as soil carbon sequestration, store carbon temporarily in living biomass," said Dr. Allanah Paul, a CO2 removal and carbon accounting expert based in Europe. Nature-based carbon removal does have advantages. The rise of negative emissionsOther climate experts view the criticisms of nature-based carbon removal as missing the central point. "As an emitter, every company should focus on reducing their emissions, but as a purchaser looking to offset residual emissions, they should prioritize purchases of robust negative emissions," he stated. "My understanding is that Symbiosis intends to create a demand for high-quality nature-based carbon removal by setting very high standards for removal quality," Leslie-Bole said.

Europe’s air safety regulator ordered inspections on engines of a flagship Airbus jet on Thursday, after a fire broke out during a Cathay Pacific flight. Mr. Ford kept their daughter at home to ensure Ms. Ford wouldn’t tell anyone in the emergency room how Robert’s injury happened. Ms. Ford, now 65, is serving a sentence of life without parole at the Central California Women’s Facility in Chowchilla. Leigh Goodmark, the author of the book “Imperfect Victims,” said that self-defense law imagines two parties of equal strength, size, weight and physical capability. But where self-defense law really fails to capture a woman’s experience is around the question of imminence. For women like Ms. Ford, Ms. Ayobi and many others, killing their way out of a relationship was an act of salvation — for themselves, for their children.

State and local governments often lease or sell land to builders, including affordable housing developers, particularly in areas with high demand for homes. In a rare overlap of goals between the two campaigns, Harris and Trump have both proposed building housing on federal land. Some Republican lawmakers agree that more federal land should be used for homes. The Biden administration has proposed selling hundreds of acres of land in Nevada controlled by the Bureau of Land Management to local governments to build thousands of new homes. But repurposing federal land for new residential communities in Nevada would likely mean more sprawl, which comes with both environmental and economic concerns.

Last week, the Democratic presidential nominee unveiled early details of her economic platform, which included a pledge to ban grocery price gouging. In a study from May, price gouging was the second leading perceived cause of inflation among surveyed consumers. WASHINGTON — The Harris campaign has tapped Yohannes Abraham for a top role in the presidential transition team, according to a source familiar with the planning. Covington and Burling LLP, the law firm where former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder works, will help the transition team get set up. Abraham's appointment comes as the General Services Administration prepares to engage the Harris and Trump campaigns in the presidential transition process. Federal law related to presidential transitions stipulates Sept. 1 as the deadline for GSA to enter into formal agreements with presidential transition teams. Several former Trump administration staffers are part of the groups behind Project 2025, but McMahon and Lutnick haven’t been connected to the effort.

Comparisons were drawn to the 1968 Chicago convention, when national unrest during the civil rights movement and over the Vietnam War sowed an atmosphere of violence and chaos. Chicago Police Department officers were trained to deploy a disciplined and patient approach that focused on protecting free speech and allowing people to lawfully protest, a department official said. “The department trained more than a year for this,” a Chicago Police Department official who was not authorized to speak publicly told NBC News. “We are trying to get away from the old image of the Chicago Police Department,” the official said. At the 2016 Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, Rep. Patrick Maloney, D-N.Y., was met with thunderous applause as he proudly introduced transgender advocate Sarah McBride. “She is right now the first trans person ever to address a national convention,” Maloney boasted. But at this year’s Democratic convention in Chicago, trans people were notably absent from the stage. To some trans Americans, the omission did not go unnoticed. Harris, who has actively supported gay rights throughout her career, is also seen by advocates as having one of the most, if not the most, LGBTQ-friendly policy record of any presidential candidate.

A New Zealand charity that works with low-income people says it unknowingly distributed candies containing potentially lethal levels of methamphetamine. The New Zealand Drug Foundation, which tested the candies that were still on the premises, said each one contained about 3g of methamphetamine, up to 300 times the level someone might usually take. The group said people who had started to consume the candies reported a bitter taste and feeling unusual. Lobster fishing is a game of inches, and the number of inches is about to change. Fishing regulators are instituting a new rule that lobster fishermen must abide by stricter minimum sizes for crustaceans they harvest. The changes do not apply in Canada, which has an even larger lobster fishing industry than the U.S. Some scientists who study the fishery have supported the minimum size change. But the lobster industry sees a different story, said Patrice McCarron, executive director of the Maine Lobstermen’s Association, the oldest and largest fishing industry association on the East Coast.

But the widowed 78-year-old now has to skimp on her meals because her Social Security benefits haven’t kept up with the rising costs for food, housing and health care in recent years. Social Security benefits have lost 20% of their buying power since 2010, according to a recent analysis by The Senior Citizens League, an advocacy group. Every January, Social Security recipients get an annual cost-of-living adjustment, known as a COLA, but the increases often don’t keep up with the actual rise in prices – hurting senior citizens, many of whom live on fixed incomes and depend heavily on their Social Security benefits. Social Security benefits have risen by 58% between 2010 and 2024, but the cost of goods and services purchased by typical retirees jumped 73% during that time, the league said. For Albrecht, it feels like her Social Security benefits have lost more than 20% of their buying power.

London CNN —A record-breaking series of auctions of King Charles III banknotes has raised £914,127 ($1.2 million) for 10 UK charities, according to the Bank of England. The banknotes, auctioned by Spink & Sons over the summer, sold for 11.7 times their face value of £78,430 ($100,318), as collectors snapped up some of the first versions of the new cash to roll off the printing presses. The runaway success of the auctions highlights the value that collectors attach to banknotes with especially low serial numbers, which denote that they are among the first to be printed. “Lucky numbers” also attracted high bids, according to Spink & Sons. Two £5 notes with serial numbers ending in 88 and 888 were auctioned for £2,200 ($2,800) and £2,400 ($3,100).

The initial application from Lykos presented positive data from two late-stage clinical trials that used MDMA in combination with talk therapy to treat PTSD. The advisers said it was also difficult to parse how much the accompanying talk therapy — an area that the FDA does not regulate — contributed to outcomes. Advocates for the treatment, including some veterans groups, said they were “incredibly disappointed” by the FDA decision. Dozens of clinical trials involving psychedelics are in various stages, and additional scrutiny can help strengthen the findings and build confidence.
