The number of Republican women in the House has tripled to a record 36, including two nonvoting members. Others involved in the effort to boost GOP women are also hopeful they can reach a new milestone this year. The number of House candidates has dropped overall since 2022, a redistricting year that brought a surge of new candidates. The Center for Women and Politics found the steepest drop was among Republican women. For Stefanik, the effort to recruit more GOP women to run for the House has been a resounding success.

PHUKET, Thailand — Thailand’s landmark marriage equality bill has been endorsed by the monarchy, making it the first country in Southeast Asia and the third place in Asia to recognize same-sex marriage. It will take effect in 120 days, allowing LGBTQ couples to register their marriages starting Jan. 22. “Congratulations on everyone’s love,” Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra said in a post on X that included the hashtag #LoveWins. Thailand, one of the most popular tourist destinations in Asia, is known for its tolerance and vibrant LGBTQ social scene, but it also retains conservative social values that made passing the law a yearslong struggle for activists. Taiwan was the first place in Asia to allow same-sex marriage in 2019, followed last year by the South Asian country of Nepal.

But as other pandemic Zoomtowns continue to see increases in prices and rents, Austin stands alone in its change of fortune. Housing in Austin has been through so many extreme distortions that nobody really knows what "normal" even means anymore. All told, Austin's housing stock has ballooned by more than 76,000 units since 2020, an 8.34% increase that includes single-family homes, condos, and townhomes. Considering the size of the Austin market, moving the stock of homes by nearly 10% is a colossal feat. It was the second knife attack on Japanese children and third assault on foreigners in China in recent months. “As a Chinese, I feel heartbroken, outraged and ashamed,” said a Shenzhen resident who laid a white rose outside the Japanese school following the boy’s death last Thursday. The killing has shaken the Japanese community in China, with some of Japan’s biggest companies offering to repatriate staff members and their families. Generations of Chinese grew up learning about the atrocities committed by Japanese soldiers in school textbooks and on state television. “There is no so-called Japan-hating education in China,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said Monday.

Zelensky told the UN General Assembly “radiation does not respect state borders.”Since Russia “can’t defeat our people’s resistance on the battlefield,” Zelensky said Russian President Vladimir Putin is “looking for other ways to break the Ukrainian spirit.”For a third winter, Russia is stepping up its strikes on Ukraine’s energy grid in a bid to leave Ukrainians in the “dark and cold,” Zelensky said. In his speech Zelensky recalled the “horrifying” moment in the first weeks of the war when Russian attacks on the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), the largest in Europe, stirred fears among Ukrainians of another Chernobyl-style disaster. “No one could know how Russian strikes on the nuclear facility would end, and everyone in Ukraine was reminded of what Chernobyl means,” he said. Two-and-a-half years later, Zelensky warned the ZNPP remains “at risk of a nuclear incident.”This is a developing story and will be updated.

Why Trump is polling better in Georgia than North CarolinaBy Steve KornackiThe latest round of New York Times/Siena College state polls is a continuation of what has become a pattern: Donald Trump seems to be faring slightly better in Georgia than in North Carolina. And Trump is up by 2 points in North Carolina, where he prevailed by 1.3 points four years ago. And yet — at least in polling — it’s Georgia, not North Carolina, where Trump seems better positioned. According to exit polling, Trump won the noncollege white vote in each state by roughly the same margin in 2020: 59 points in Georgia and 57 points in North Carolina. It’s a smaller lead among a slightly smaller share of the electorate than Harris has over those early voters.

Nearly 1 in 3 Americans may have an undiagnosed iron deficiency, a problem that can lead to fatigue, brain fog and difficulty concentrating, a new study suggests. An analysis of data from more than 8,000 adults in the U.S. revealed that 14% had low iron blood levels, a condition known as absolute iron deficiency, while 15% had the right iron levels but their bodies couldn’t use the essential mineral properly, known as functional iron deficiency, according to the report published Tuesday in JAMA Network Open. Doctors don’t typically screen adults for iron deficiency, which is why the condition has been overlooked in many people. There had been hints in other studies suggesting iron deficiency might be more widespread than doctors assume. The rates of iron deficiency between men and women are more similar after the age of menopause, experts said.

Jim Pillen announced Tuesday he will not call a special legislative session to change how the state allocates its electoral votes, dashing Republican hopes that the switch could happen before November. Former President Donald Trump and his allies have been pushing state lawmakers to switch to a winner-take-all system, in which the presidential candidate who carries the state receives all five of its electoral votes. Currently, three of the state’s votes are awarded to the candidate who wins each of its three congressional districts. Jim Pillen, a Republican, will not call a special session to change the way the state allocates its Electoral College votes. "Based on the lack of 33 votes, I have no plans to call a special session on this issue prior to the 2024 election.

Federal Reserve Governor Michelle Bowman said Tuesday she thought her colleagues should have taken a more measured approach to last week’s half percentage point interest rate cut as she worries that inflation could reignite. In explaining her rationale, Bowman said the half percentage point, or 50 basis point, reduction posed a number of risks to the Fed’s twin goals of achieving low inflation and full employment. Though Bowman favored a reduction, she preferred the Fed lower by a quarter percentage point, more in line with the traditional moves at the central bank. In recent statements, Fed officials have cited easing inflation and a softening labor market as justification for the cut. At last week’s meeting, individual policymakers indicated they expect another half percentage point in cuts this year and another full point in 2025.
