The number of ETFs tied to cryptocurrencies is expanding dramatically in the first week of October, with a wave of funds that buy ether futures launching on Monday. "I think the long-term buyers of these products are financial professionals — financial advisors, family offices," and registered investment advisors, said Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan. The fund has slightly lagged the price of spot bitcoin since inception in 2021, when bitcoin was near an all-time high. "The thing that people wanted to find out was would a bitcoin futures ETF do its job? And in fact it has done that quite well," said Simeon Hyman, head of the investment strategy group at ProShares.

In the final quarter of the year, bitcoin is likely to see continued chop and although there's room for some upside, it may be limited. Despite this, it remains on pace for an 11% decline in the third quarter, historically a weaker quarter for the cryptocurrency. Meanwhile, holding a non-yielding asset like gold or bitcoin could become "less interesting" as rates go higher, Amberdata's Magadini said. There's a significant crowd on both sides, Cox said – "that's why bitcoin is up 60% in a year when the Fed has hiked interest rates so aggressively." The answer to that depends on interest rates, which will probably stay high."

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsSept 28 (Reuters) - Investment manager Valkyrie Funds LLC has begun adding ethereum futures to its existing Bitcoin futures exchange-traded fund, after getting the green light from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the company said on Thursday. The renamed Valkyrie Bitcoin and Ether Strategy ETF (BTF.O) will launch on Monday, Valkyrie's chief investment officer Steven McClurg told Reuters. Rival asset managers VanEck and ProShares are looking to offer pure ether futures ETFs, in contrast to Valkyrie's hybrid ETF. The SEC's decision to drop long-held objections to ether futures ETFs is a boost for the crypto industry, which has been pushing the agency to expand the types of crypto ETFs they can offer. Media reports that the SEC was poised to approve ether futures ETFs appears to have been boosting the token's price.

Bitcoin is facing a number of headwinds including low liquidity which is contributing to volatility. Cryptocurrency prices rose broadly on Monday, with bitcoin climbing above $27,000 for the first time this month. Bitcoin was last higher by less than 1% at $26,685.97, according to Coin Metrics. The reason for the move wasn't clear, although there was a spike in trading volume during opening hours in the Asian market, said Dessislava Aubert, senior research analyst at crypto data provider Kaiko. "In the current low liquidity environment, relatively low buying and selling pressure could amplify spot price movements and spur liquidations on derivatives markets," she said.

Despite ether's recent price action, the network has been thriving since the "merge" – and could just be getting started. Still, market participants are seeing and feeling the success of the Ethereum merge. Here's how Ethereum is doing on some of its post-merge goals: Yields Ether's staking reward reference rate was 5.854% per annum on Sept. 15, 2022, according to Ethereum data provider Beaconchain. The percentage of ether supply being staked has risen from 11.99% on Sept. 15, 2022, to 20.46% on Aug. 30 of this year. Burning fees and decreasing supply Ethereum has a mechanism programmed in to regulate the network's notoriously high transaction fees, called gas fees, by "burning" them.

Bitcoin's price this week is near a familiar and key support level, but its latest stop there is a little more worrying than previous ones this year, according to Wolfe Research. "With support in this area on dual fronts, it makes sense that price would hold and consolidate in this region. "Longer term momentum is starting to break in bitcoin," he added. Short term price action is never our worry, it's when longer term trends start to break, that we want to take notice and pivot accordingly." "As the retail investor comes under pressure and liquidity is drained, our concerns will only grow for crypto prices," Ginsberg added.

During the hearing, Dorsey overruled concerns raised by two FTX customers who said FTX sales could cause crypto prices to crash and that FTX may not own all of the crypto that it holds in its accounts. FTX said in court filings it was keenly aware of the risk that its effort to liquidate coins could move crypto markets. But keeping its current crypto portfolio intact also carries risks, potentially locking FTX into holding certain assets as their prices decline, according to FTX’s court papers. FTX filed for bankruptcy in November 2022 in the wake of claims that it misused and lost billions of dollars worth of customers' crypto deposits. FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried has pleaded not guilty to charges that he defrauded FTX customers by using their funds to prop up his own risky investments.

Many crypto and asset management industry professionals now expect the first so-called spot bitcoin funds to launch in 2024 . The number of firms jockeying for a spot bitcoin ETF has already broken into double digits, and it's still growing. The largest bitcoin futures ETF, the ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) , has an expense ratio of 0.95%. Valkyrie has a Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BTF) that holds futures and has also applied to launch a spot product. He pointed to a Roundhill Ether Futures ETF filing with a proposed 0.19% fee as a more realistic target.
