Nicolas Cage Photo: Butcher's Crossing Film LLCThe Western “Butcher’s Crossing” begins in 1874 Kansas, where a cosseted young Harvard student is heading west in search of adventure, love or meaning—possibly all three. The audience settles in knowingly to watch as every force on the frontier conspires to delete that grin. “I’m a rather quick study,” Will tells townspeople as he searches for a job, the more arduous the better. McDonald ( Paul Raci ), an ornery old cuss who deals in buffalo hides, tells him to get lost. Neither the fear of being scalped nor the possibility of freezing to death in a prairie winter are as daunting as this man, mainly because he’s played by Nicolas Cage .

The role of Paulie, who was also the brother of Rocky's painfully shy love interest and soon-to-be wife, Adrian (she marries Balboa in "Rocky II"), earned Young an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actor. Young reprised the Paulie role in all six of the original "Rocky" sequels. In later years, Young made a name as painter, whose works were displayed in galleries around the world.

In a jittery loud voice, a man from across the hall told about us the Hamas invasion of Israel that had just begun. That moment repeats on a loop in my mind — when I wake up at night and when the sirens repeat. Mr. Netanyahu has been prime minister for 13 of the past 14 years. While the head of the Shin Bet security service and the commander of military intelligence have publicly taken responsibility, the prime minister has glaringly failed to do so. But if the army and country were unprepared for the Hamas invasion — as they clearly were —- there is no place else for the buck to stop.

For the first time in a long time, tech workers are in a funk. This rare combination of generous compensation and a reasonable work-life balance kept tech workers happier than employees in other industries. Economy wide, there were on average 6.6 front-line workers per manager in 2018 and 2019, but post-pandemic, the ratio dropped to 6 to 1. It's possible that as tech companies have grown into more complex organizations, more management layers are necessary. Fundamentally, it's about listening to and elevating the voices of front-line employees.

Opinion: Where the war goes from here

We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. The war plays out on everyone’s screens, forcing people to confront cruelty and killing and to fear what comes next. “Hamas’ mission is, by definition, to end Israel, not to seek to establish a self-governed Palestinian state that peacefully coexists alongside the Jewish state. “An Israeli normalization deal with Saudi Arabia — the location of the two holiest sites in Islam — would be hugely symbolic and have real security benefits for Israel,” wrote Peter Bergen. “After all, almost exactly half a century ago, during the 1973 Yom Kippur War, two Arab states, Egypt and Syria, attacked Israel.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House said on Friday that North Korea has delivered more than 1,000 containers of military equipment and munitions to Russia for its ongoing war in Ukraine. The containers were shipped between Sept. 7 and Oct. 1 between Najin, North Korea, and Dunay, Russia, according to the White House. The U.S. has accused North Korea of previously providing ammunition, artillery shells and rockets to Russia. North Korea has previously denied providing weaponry to Moscow. After decades of hot-and-cold relations, Russia and North Korea have drawn closer since Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

The so-called core PPI increased 2.8% on a year-on-year basis in September after climbing 2.9% in August. Wholesale goods prices increased 0.9%, with a 3.3% rise in the cost of energy products accounting for nearly three-quarters of the increase. Excluding the volatile food and energy components, core goods prices edged up 0.1% for the second straight month. This mostly reflected the normalization of supply chains, whose disruption fueled goods inflation in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. Though core inflation is cooling, higher gasoline and food prices could hamper progress by raising the cost of other goods as well as causing consumers to expect inflation to rise.

Most of the people participating in the trend are in their 20s, citing various reasons for quitting ranging from low wages to burnout. LiangAccording to China’s LinkedIn equivalent Maimai, out of 1,554 employees across various sectors surveyed from January through October 2022, 28% resigned that year. A similar movement, dubbed the Great Resignation, had taken off in the United States, with almost 50 million people quitting their jobs in two years. Despite the proliferation of higher education degrees, China’s economy doesn’t currently require as many high-skilled workers and it takes time to transform the economic structure, she said. The resignation trend could affect fertility, but it’s not yet clear how, she said.

At a hearing at Oakland County Circuit Court, Judge Kwame Rowe will announce his decision on the possibility of parole for Ethan Crumbley, who was 15 years old when he carried out the mass shooting at Oxford High School. Crumbley pleaded guilty last October to 24 charges, including one count of terrorism causing death and four counts of first-degree murder. Defense attorneys presented testimony from doctors who saw the potential to remedy Crumbley's mental health issues over time. She told the FTX podcast she decided to join Bankman-Fried at Alameda despite lacking experience with cryptocurrencies to "maximize my impact." ELLISON MAY TESTIFY ABOUT ENCRYPTED MESSAGESProsecutors may ask Ellison about whether Bankman-Fried directed employees to use encrypted messaging platforms and ensure their messages automatically deleted. She has told prosecutors that Bankman-Fried said it is hard to build a case if information is not written down or preserved, court records show. Days before FTX declared bankruptcy, Ellison told Bankman-Fried her "increasing dread of this day" had been weighing on her for a long time, according to prosecutors.

NEW YORK, Oct 26 (Reuters) - A few years after graduating from college, Sam Bankman-Fried grew worried he was not taking enough risks. Two years after launching a hedge fund, Alameda Research, Bankman-Fried founded FTX, an exchange that let users buy and sell digital assets such as bitcoin. Based in the Bahamas, Bankman-Fried became known for his mop of unkempt curly hair and for wearing rumpled shorts, even when entertaining dignitaries like Bill Clinton. They contend the theft came to a head in 2022, when crypto prices swooned and he used FTX funds to plug losses at Alameda. Defense lawyers have argued that their cooperation agreements with prosecutors encourage them to implicate Bankman-Fried in the hopes of receiving lenient sentences.

September 22 - Jameson Taillon struck out seven while going six innings and Seiya Suzuki clubbed a two-run homer for one of his three hits, and had three RBIs, as the Chicago Cubs beat the visiting Colorado Rockies 6-0 on Friday. Taillon (8-10) certainly helped the cause, though he was far from dominant while yielding four of Colorado's six hits and four walks. The Cubs loaded the bases with one out in the first against Colorado rookie starter Noah Davis (0-3), but managed only a run via Suzuki's RBI single. Rockies left fielder Nolan Jones cut down Ian Happ trying to score a second run on the same play to end the inning. In his first major league start since June 20, Davis lasted five innings, allowing three runs, four hits, walking three and striking out four.

The issue that comes up the most — particularly among women and even from some Republicans and independents, she says — is protecting abortion rights. For those on either side of the debate, Virginia — where all state House and Senate seats are up for election and early voting begins Friday — is among the biggest fights this year over abortion rights. The other is the resounding defeat of incumbent Sen. Joe Morrissey, a scandal-plagued, self-described “pro-life” Democrat, by his June primary challenger, Lashrecse Aird, who centered her campaign around abortion rights. In August, Ohio voters rejected a measure pushed by Republicans that was seen as a proxy for an abortion rights question on the ballot this fall. Perry defended her record and said she believes Virginia — and her Senate matchup against Segura — will be bellwethers for 2024.

The White House on Wednesday announced a program that will aim to train 20,000 young people for climate-focused jobs related to clean energy, land restoration, forest management and more. In addition to training, the program also intends to be a pipeline for participants to get hired into green jobs. In 2021, he proposed spending $30 billion on a Civilian Climate Corps, which would have had over 300,000 members, as a part of the larger Build Back Better Act bill, the framework of Biden's climate agenda. The Civilian Climate Corps appeared to be a modern version of the New Deal-era Civilian Conservation Corps, a program for unmarried young men to train for jobs in public land and forest improvement. But after The Mail on Sunday newspaper wrote about the calls, thousands of irate callers flooded the BBC switchboard and the incident became a political storm. Brand was forced into an apology, but Greenslade said that incident didn’t affect Brand’s popularity among fans as it played into his “bad boy” image. With those videos, Monbiot said, Brand engaged young and disenfranchised voters in a way that actual politicians had struggled to do. Over time, the tenor of the Brand’s videos changed, and became filled with conspiracies and conservative talking points, including vaccine skepticism.
