Opinion | Biden’s Aid, and Pointed Advice, to Israel
  + stars: | 2023-10-19 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +4 min
Ron BoyerEugene, Ore.To the Editor:As an American Jew, I am horrified by President Biden’s response to Hamas’s horrific murder of Israelis on Oct. 7. By providing military aid to Israel, the U.S. government is fueling the Israeli government’s vastly disproportionate response, in which it has already killed more Palestinian civilians than Israeli civilians were killed by Hamas. To the Editor:As an American Israeli living in Israel with a son in the Israel Defense Forces, I feel that I must speak out. It is clear to Israelis that in carrying out these atrocities, Hamas was seeking to draw Israel into precisely the actions that Israel is now engaged in. The justification for those actions could be debated endlessly, but the world must know that Israel considers itself in existential peril.

Eugene Hoshiko/Pool via REUTERS Acquire Licensing RightsIWAKI, Japan, Oct 19 (Reuters) - A team of international scientists collected fish samples from a port town near Japan's crippled Fukushima nuclear plant on Thursday, seeking to assess the impact of the plant's recent release of treated radioactive water into the sea. Scientists from China, South Korea and Canada observed the collection of fish samples delivered fresh off the boat at Hisanohama port, about 50 kilometres south of the plant which was destroyed in the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. The samples will be sent to laboratories in each country for independent testing, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said. Before being released, the water is filtered to remove isotopes, leaving only tritium, a radioactive isotope of hydrogen that is hard to separate, plant operator Tepco says. Dash Cart users are required to sign in to the cart using an Amazon or Whole Foods account. At the time, Amazon made the Dash Cart available at select Whole Foods stores, in addition to many of its Fresh grocery stores. Once personalized ads are rolled out, Dash Cart users would get ads based on things like the area of the store they are in. Dash Cart users are able to automatically check-out products placed in the cart without having to go through a cashier. But its physical stores revenue, mostly coming from Whole Foods and its Fresh grocery stores, grew just 6% year-over-year last quarter to $5 billion.

Journal Editorial Report: A deep Republican divide paralyzes the government. Image: Ohad Zwigenberg/Associated PressMost victims of the Oct. 7 massacre in Israel weren’t yet buried when some prominent international voices—including U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders , the nonprofit Human Rights Watch, and Josep Borell , the European Union’s top diplomat—suggested that Israel’s first efforts to defend itself are war crimes. This raises an important question: Does international law require a nation to choose between committing war crimes and having war crimes committed against it?

The stagnation of investment does not stem only from the size of government. But the United States has effectively starved programs focused on the future at the expense of those focused on the present. For decades, incomes and wealth have grown more slowly than the economy for every group other than the very rich. Net worth for the typical family shrank during the first two decades of the 21st century, after adjusting for inflation. The trends in many noneconomic measures of well-being are even worse: In 1980, life expectancy in the United States was typical for an industrialized country.

Amazon's executive in charge of its private-label business has found a new role on the supply chain side, following the company's decision to axe dozens of house brands, Insider has learned. Matt Taddy, formerly Amazon's VP of private brands, is now VP of supply chain optimization technology, also known as SCOT, according to an internal email reviewed by Insider. Amazon's private label business launched dozens of in-house brands in recent years across a number of categories, including clothing, furniture, and electronics. The Federal Trade Commission said in a lawsuit against Amazon last month that the company "degrades its search quality by stacking the deck against third-party competitors of Amazon's private label products." In response, Amazon started significantly scaling back its private label business, and decided to cut many of these brands, according to the Wall Street Journal .

The Moon crosses in front of the Sun over Albuquerque, New Mexico, during an annular eclipse on October 14, 2023. Cheers erupted among crowds in Oregon and New Mexico on Saturday as a rare "ring of fire" eclipse of the sun that had millions across the Americas waiting with anticipation began putting on a spectacular show. Clouds and fog threatened to obscure the view of the eclipse in some western states, including California and Oregon. Unlike a total solar eclipse, the moon doesn't completely cover the sun during a ring of fire eclipse. Amazon accidentally published a job posting for a director of security engineering for something called "Project Panda" with a strange description indicating the listing would be used to find "opportunistic candidates." "This posting was listed in error and we're working to remove it," Brad Glasser, an Amazon spokesperson said. "Pooling requisition for security," the now-deleted job posting repeatedly stated. The job posting, and the description in particular, fueled speculation among insiders over if Amazon is advertising positions the company doesn't intend to fill, one told us. Amazon laid off 27,000 employees over the past year, and has put a hiring freeze in many teams across the company.

Lynch said his agency is seeking congressional authorization to study another round of deepening for the Savannah River shipping channel. The Army Corps of Engineers last year finished deepening the waterway by 5 feet (1.5 meters), a $973 million project that took 25 years to study and execute. Buddy Carter, a Republican whose district includes Savannah's port, said they support studying another harbor expansion. “This port affects every county in Georgia,” said Georgia House Speaker Jon Burns, a Republican who attended the speech.

SEOUL, Oct 12 (Reuters) - Kia Corp (000270.KS) on Thursday unveiled three new small-to-medium sized electric vehicles (EV) to attract a wider range of customers in an effort to expedite its electrification strategies. The production of the EV5 will take place in both China and South Korea, Kia said, adding that the EV5 in China and South Korea would have different battery types. Kia did not disclose the detailed driving range of the EV5 for South Korea, adding that it will be tailored to meet market demands. Analysts said Kia's push to launch more affordable EVs is timely as an increasing number of car buyers are looking to purchase price friendly EVs. "While those early adopters have preferred more expensive premium electric vehicles, as EVs have become more popular among more general public, consumer needs for more affordable EVs have significantly grown," said Lee Jae-il, an analyst at Eugene Investment & Securities.

The union and Kia's management had been holding talks for three months over wage increases and an extension of the retirement age. Earlier, the union said it would limit working hours for six working days from Oct. 12 after negotiations stalled, in what would have been the first industrial action at Kia in three years. Kia declined to comment on the industrial action. Last month, the union at South Korea's second largest automaker with more than 26,600 members said 92.3% of its members had approved strike action unless the management accepts their demands. Because the deals with Hyundai Motor and affiliate Hyundai Mobis (012330.KS) were concluded without any industrial action, Kia's unions are likely to avoid any major industrial action, analysts said.

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — The New Hampshire presidential primary filing period starts Wednesday, a ritual unruffled by either a changing of the guard or changes to the nominating calendar elsewhere. They need only meet the basic requirements to be president, fill out a one-page form and pay a $1,000 filing fee. But he wouldn’t be the first reelection-seeking incumbent missing from the primary ballot: President Lyndon Johnson won the 1968 Democratic primary as a write-in, though a shockingly strong-second place showing by Sen. Eugene McCarthy helped push him out of the race. Scanlan, who served as deputy secretary of state for 20 years, said he was excited to welcome candidates starting Wednesday. “That was Bill’s style, and he was really, really good at it.”

Amazon is working on a secret new initiative, called Project Nile, that overhauls its search engine to add AI chatbot technology. One potential outcome from the upgraded search experience is more sales from mobile users, according to a transcript of an internal presentation earlier this year by Joseph Sirosh, VP of Amazon Search and Alexa Shopping. Sirosh said it will be "mobile first" because that's where the new features may have the biggest impact on sales. "If we can increase the conversion on mobile, because we provide great experiences, great expert answers, then that could be a potentially significant lift to Amazon," Sirosh added. During the presentation, Sirosh said the new AI conversation layer will be added to the currently existing Amazon search bar.
