However, the economy and the job market may be too strong to warrant steep rate cuts in the near term. "September's strong employment report and upward revisions in July and August murdered the hard-landing scenario," Yardeni said in a note to clients this week. The 30-year mortgage rate has crept higher, not lower, since the Fed delivered its big rate cut. As the economy reaccelerates, inflation could become a problem again, solidifying a higher for longer interest rate outlook that many had abandoned after the Fed's jumbo rate cut last month. AI expert Gary Marcus says OpenAI may be forced to become a surveillance company to make money. AI expert Gary Marcus says the company shaping the global AI arms race is on the cusp of turning what Orwell imagined into reality. "What they're going to be pressed to do is become a surveillance company." But Marcus thinks the company won't be able to earn enough money to support its valuation that way because the technology isn't advanced enough. Marcus suspects that OpenAI will eventually tap into this potential income stream and become a powerful surveillance company.

When I first learned I'd be subject to China's infamous 996 hours, I was actually excited. At that point, I'd worked for nearly two years in Guangzhou as an English-Chinese interpreter at a local tech giant. I had this idea that those work hours meant I was on a serious, valuable team and that my productivity mattered. Then, I'd work until 12:30 p.m. when it was time for lunch. My dream is still to make games in China, but I'm not sure if any company could ever entice me to work 996 hours again.
