A man accused of chewing off the ear of a 78-year-old man on a light-rail train platform near Portland, Oregon, told detectives he thought the victim was a robot trying to kill him, police said. Koryn Daniel Kraemer was charged with second-degree assault in Multnomah County District Court on Wednesday, the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office said. Officers used force to remove Kraemer from the victim and the victim was taken to a hospital, the affidavit said. The victim’s right ear was bitten off in the attack and part of his skull was visible, the affidavit said. Multnomah County jail staff later identified the man as Kraemer, who had recently moved to Portland from Georgia, the affidavit said.

They found that the fear of an emotional loss was more than twice as powerful as an emotional gain. Twenty people who were on a Hawaiian Airlines flight near Honolulu suffered significant injuries when the jetliner bucked violently in a patch of turbulent air Sunday, officials said. The aircraft was at capacity, with 278 passengers, eight flight attendants and two pilots on board, when the incident shook it enough to damage interior panels and cause head injuries for multiple people, Hawaiian Airlines officials said. Flight 35 was at a cruising altitude of 36,000 feet when it hit the patch, Hawaiian Airlines Chief Operating Officer Jon Snook said at a news conference Sunday. Fasten seat belt lights were on at the time, but at least some of the injured were not restrained properly, airlines officials said. Such a level of turbulence has not affected a Hawaiian Airlines flight since the century began, Snook said.
The Securities and Exchange Commission has charged seven social media influencers with securities fraud, saying Wednesday that they were part of a $100 million scheme to use social media platforms Twitter and Discord, as well as podcasts, to manipulate the price of certain stocks. Discord is a private chatroom and messaging platform that is popular with gaming influencers and, more recently, financial influencers. According to the SEC, seven of the defendants promoted stocks to their hundreds of thousands of Twitter followers and in stock trading rooms on Discord since at least January 2020. They would then promote the stock to their followers and inflate the share price, announcing price targets and teasing upcoming news about the company. Those stocks are often ripe for manipulation because they receive less attention and have lower trading volumes.
The seal of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is seen at their headquarters in Washington, D.C., May 12, 2021. The influencers allegedly gained a profit by pumping the stock prices and then selling once they rose, earning about $100 million in total, the SEC claims. The seven charged with securities fraud used the social media platforms to manipulate exchange-traded stocks in a scheme going back to at least January 2020, the SEC alleged. The SEC alleged Knight also traded with the other defendants and saw profits from the scheme. Some of the defendants' Twitter bios include disclaimers at least as of Wednesday that appear to try to mitigate their legal risks.

Officials downgraded the alert level for Hawaii's Mauna Loa volcano from a warning to a watch on Saturday as they predict that the eruption of the world's largest active volcano could soon end. "High eruption rates will not resume based on past eruptive behavior and current behavior suggests that the eruption may end soon," the U.S. Geological Survey said in a bulletin issued Saturday. The new alert level reflects "the limited hazards associated with the current activity," the latest update states. Its eruption began Nov. 27, marking its first eruption since 1984 and prompting warnings from officials that residents stay alert. Before the most recent eruption, geologists had recorded 33 eruptions since 1843, making Mauna Loa among the world’s most active volcanoes.

Dec 10 (Reuters) - Lava and volcanic gas emissions at Hawaii's Mauna Loa, the world's largest active volcano, declined on Saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said. As a result, the Observatory downgraded the alert level for the volcano to a watch from the previous level of warning, with lava confined to a small area. Under a watch alert level, an eruption is underway but poses limited hazards. Mauna Loa began erupting in late November for the first time since 1984, ending its longest quiet period in recorded history. The behavior of the volcano suggests the eruption may end soon.
Jewish and anti-hate organizations are urging social media influencers and tech platforms to stop hosting interviews with Ye, the rapper and artist formerly known as Kanye West, as he’s continued to make antisemitic statements and criticize Jewish people in his recent public appearances. Ross has been silent on the topic of the Ye interview since the call with Fuentes was published.

There are no guarantees for a screen actor anymore. There are no guarantees for a screen actor’s audience. Perhaps that’s why we’ve turned, along with many an actor, to television, where the ground feels more fertile. There is enough outstanding work on television alone to fill a portfolio twice or three times the size of this one. We want to applaud, marvel at and salute the achievement of screen acting, the increasing miracle of it in challenging and confusing circumstances.

People watch lava from the Mauna Loa volcano on Dec. 1, 2022, near Hilo, Hawaii. If lava does cross the highway, the Hawaii National Guard can help plan for alternatives and try to set up bypass routes, the governor said. Cars wait in traffic along Saddle Road, with occupants waiting to view the Mauna Loa volcano on Thursday. Mauna Loa, which means “Long Mountain,” covers half the island, according to the USGS. It is one of six volcanoes in Hawaii, according to the agency.

REUTERS/Go NakamuraDec 2 (Reuters) - The lava flowing from Hawaii's Mauna Loa, which is the world's largest active volcano and erupted this week, is edging closer to the Big Island's main highway. But the USGS also said that because of the unpredictable nature of lava flows, it's "difficult to estimate when or if the flow will impact" the highway, which is the island's main east- west road. On flatter ground, lava flows spread out and "inflate" - creating individual lobes that can advance quickly and then stall. Mauna Loa rises 13,679 feet (4,169 meters) above the Pacific Ocean, part of a chain of volcanoes that formed the islands of Hawaii.
For many in the Native Hawaiian community, it carried a larger cultural and political symbolism and a message to respect Indigenous communities and land. Many Native Hawaiians are drawing from their mythology around Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of fire and creator of the islands, to help assign meaning to the historic eruption. “You don’t have authority to shape our sacred lands.”The eruption, Ing said, “is Pelehonuamea saying, ‘They’re right. And Pele’s lava flow, ho’omanawanui said, is associated with a cleansing that the Native Hawaiian community receives with gratitude rather than fear. So now Pele is coming in.”The symbolism around the eruption can also be applied to another lasting colonial force on the island: the tourism industry, Ing said.
A new aerial video shows the eruption of Hawaii's Mauna Loa volcano, which began late Sunday after a series of large earthquakes, officials said. The video, captured by helicopter, shows the volcano spewing fountains of lava, which stretch across its surface, as clouds of smoke rise above. The lava flow earlier cut off access to a key climate monitoring station, according to KHNL. The eruption followed weeks of warnings from officials that a blast was imminent following a spike in earthquakes at the volcano’s summit and that Big Island residents should be prepared to evacuate if necessary, KHNL reported. Officials have said the eruption threatens air quality, which could be hazardous for local residents with respiratory issues, KHNL reported.
