The cushy Big Tech job is dead

Hopping from one mid-six-figure salary job in Big Tech to the next? More tech workers get laid offOver the last 18 months, tech workers say it's felt difficult to stay employed as round after round of layoffs have swept Big Tech and the broader industry. The tech job market got tougherTo add insult to injury, keeping a job in tech isn’t the only thing that’s more difficult. Aline Lerner, a former tech engineer and founder of interviewing.io, a site for tech recruiting and mock interviewing for tech job seekers, said it's now much more difficult to land a tech job, particularly at a high-profile or Big Tech company. “Anecdotally, I’d say it’s the hardest it’s been to get a tech job since probably the dot-com bust," Lerner said.

We got a preview of this unprecedented criminal trial mixed with a presidential campaign on Thursday at a key hearing in the New York criminal case. Claiming violent crime in cites, especially those run by Democrats, is one of Trump’s favorite talking points. The idea that violent crime is at an “all-time high” is completely untrue, as CNN’s Daniel Dale wrote last October. But the judge in Manhattan has filled Trump’s calendar at the end of March, when that federal trial could theoretically have taken place. But as The New York Times notes, despite the rising number of migrants in the city, violent crime has dropped.

Executives at the online furniture retailer Wayfair told its staff in January that remote workers were likelier to be hit in its latest round of job cuts. Add in long-term trends, like the decline in loyalty between employers and employees , and it's no wonder remote workers feel anxious about cuts. “It’s not too surprising,” Peter Cappelli, a management professor at the Wharton School who has never been a big fan of remote work, said. “That is something remote workers should be thinking about as they’re engaging with supervisors,” she said. Remote workers aren’t doomed to the unemployment line, but they may want to try a little extra to get noticed.

The ruling left Mr. Trump with the opportunity to raise different objections to Mr. Vance’s subpoena. AUTUMN 2020Prosecutors interviewed employees of the main bank and insurance company that serve Mr. Trump and issued several new subpoenas. The brief unsigned order was a decisive defeat for Mr. Trump and a turning point in Mr. Vance’s investigation. Just hours later, eight years of financial records were handed over to Mr. Vance’s office. After Mr. Bragg expressed reservations about the case, Mr. Pomerantz and Mr. Dunne suspended the presentation of evidence about Mr. Trump to a grand jury.

It's introduced a fresh wave of young professionals who are shaking up the dating scene. But a new influx of transplants also creates divides among young professionals and locals. The rise of remote work has resulted in new waves of migration and, in turn, refreshed dating pools around the country. Gone are the days of app dominance, especially as younger dates forsake online dating for in-person connections.

The logo of car manufacturer Ford is pictured in Inwood, New York, on February 5, 2024. LONDON — Ford was warned on Wednesday that more than 3,000 white-collar workers across the U.K. could launch industrial action after union members rejected a pay offer from the U.S. automotive giant. The union warned Ford that if it did not attend negotiations via Acas, the U.K.'s independent conciliation service, it would begin the process of balloting its members on potential strike action. Ford said it has been in pay negotiations with employee representatives since the end of last year, as its previous two-year deal ends. "Whilst trade union members have voted internally at a members vote to reject the company's offer, Ford remains willing to continue dialogue through our established bargaining frameworks on the fair and balanced offer made," the company said.

These stylists charge thousands to help workers balance professional and casual styles. So white-collar workers in tech, law, and finance are turning to professional stylists to help them navigate their sartorial confusion. And they’re willing to shell out thousands of dollars to nail the right balance of cool and professional. Those hiring a professional stylist should be prepared to swap their $50 shirts for ones closer to the $250 range, Michelle Sterling, a professional image consultant previously told Business Insider. Gen Zers and millennials are wary of layoffs — especially a recent wave hitting the tech sector. Job security, a pension, strong benefits, and student loan forgiveness. "People in private sector jobs are three times more likely to lose their jobs than people in federal government jobs," she said, adding that public sector workers can also expect to enjoy a "better work-life balance" with a lot more paid time off. It's no secret that Gen Z is looking to rethink their approach to work and careers. It may seem counterintuitive to want to work in the public sector, which typically has lower salaries than the private sector.

Climate change is stretching the length of time parts of the Far North go without sea ice, which polar bears rely on to hunt their preferred prey: blubbery, calorie-rich seals. When the ice melts in summer, the bears move onto land and face two options. They can rest and slow down to a state approaching hibernation, or they can forage for alternative food like berries, bird eggs and small land animals. Scientists tracking 20 polar bears in Manitoba, below the Arctic Circle at the southern end of the animals’ range, found that the option the polar bears chose didn’t make much difference. Scientists estimate that, going forward, there will be five to 10 more days without sea ice each decade.

Voters who feel betrayed tend to act like spurned lovers, punishing the offending party even if it means electing somebody who will actually be worse. That’s how America got Donald Trump as president. More important was using their votes to punish Democrats for abandoning the working class. Joe Biden understood that, and in 2020 he set out to atone for the sins of the Democratic Party by promising to be the most pro-union president ever — a promise he has kept. It’s not just that he appointed the most pro-union National Labor Relations Board since the 1930s, as the labor historian Jeff Schuhrke told me.

In New Hampshire, more than 4-in-5 Haley voters said Trump would not be fit to serve again if convicted and that Biden had legitimately won. In that poll, two-thirds of Haley voters in Iowa said they would not vote for Trump in a general election; that number soared past three-fourths of her voters in New Hampshire. One key reason: fully 93% of all GOP-leaning voters said they disapproved of Biden’s performance as president. SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — A South Korean court on Monday acquitted Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong of financial crimes involving a contentious merger between Samsung affiliates in 2015 that tightened his grip over South Korea’s biggest company. The court said the prosecution failed to sufficiently prove the merger between Samsung C&T and Cheil Industries was unlawfully conducted with an aim to strengthen Lee’s control over Samsung Electronics. Lee had denied wrongdoing in the current case, describing the 2015 merger as “normal business activity.”Lee, 56, did not answer questions from reporters as left the court. Lee Jae-yong served 18 months in prison after being convicted in 2017 over separate bribery charges related to the 2015 deal. Some shareholders had opposed the 2015 merger, saying that it unfairly benefited the Lee family while hurting minority shareholders.

While Jackson’s transformation was a savvy collaboration with makeup brand CoverFx, temporary tattoo camouflage has snowballed as an essential celebrity makeup technique. While shooting the Disney+ series “The Bear,” Jeremy Allen White required extensive tattoo coverage (and temporary tattoo re-application) that would withstand filming for hours in a hot kitchen. Paris Jackson was a blank canvas on the red carpet after her makeup artists spent two hours camouflaging her 80 tattoos, shown on the right. Elsewhere on the red carpet, while Rey and Jackson were disguising their ink, Doja Cat (who scooped three awards this season) went face-first into the world of — albeit temporary — tattoos. In a memorable montage from the 1999 workplace satire "Office Space," Peter Gibbons, a fed-up office drone, decides to take a stand. For years, the office cubicle was the four-walled avatar of corporate disaffection. Late '90s films like "Office Space," "Fight Club," and "The Matrix" enshrined its detested status. The tech boom arrived, bringing with it open office plans and a Silicon Valley-led gloss of egalitarianism, epitomized by Google's high-profile headquarters redesign in 2005. The top comment on the "Office Space" cubicle clip on YouTube captures the irony of this shift: "I would have killed for a cubicle," the commenter wrote.
