One alternative would be to sail to West Coast ports on the other side of the country, likely using the Panama Canal, a journey of thousands of miles that would hike costs and add weeks to delivery times. Bryan R. Smith / AFP - Getty Images fileThe ILA is seeking a big pay raise along with commitments to halt port automation projects it fears will kill jobs. The USMX had offered a 50% pay bump, but the ILA said it was insufficient to address its concerns. The strike affects 36 ports — including New York, Baltimore and Houston — that handle a range of containerized goods. Biden’s administration has repeatedly said it will not use federal powers to halt the strike.

Trade tensions, too, have resulted in tariffs and affected world trade in certain goods. The market for companies in this space is driven by the volume of global trade, and this so-called supply chain "complexity," Goldman noted. It sees some stocks as being able to benefit from higher supply chain "complexity." Freight-forwarding firms such as DSV , DHL Forwarding and Kuehne+Nagel are "well-placed to help their clients navigate higher complexity and shocks," Goldman said. Container lines such as Cosco, Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd are less directly exposed to the higher supply chain complexity, said Goldman.

For many with allergies, fall is peak season that’s now probably compounded by a warming planet. Allergy season is starting earlier and lasting longer, which scientists attribute to a variety of causes, including the climate crisis. With respiratory viruses also prevalent in colder weather, how can people distinguish between seasonal allergies and a virus? Common symptoms of fall allergies can include a runny or stuffy nose as well as sniffling, sneezing, watery eyes and coughing. CNN —While there are still five weeks until Election Day, voting is already underway across the country and a CNN review suggests pre-election voting this year will drop from the pandemic-era highs of 2020. That’s a tiny fraction of the roughly 158 million votes cast for president in the 2020 election. The downtick in interest in early voting so far shouldn’t be surprising. The 2020 election featured historic levels of pre-election voting during the COVID-19 pandemic. Federal spending on children climbed to a peak of $11,690 per child in 2021 in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2024, that spending is expected to level off to $8,760 per child — a decline of about $230 per child from the previous year, the research found. In 2021, child poverty fell to 5.2%, down from 12.6% in 2019. The expiration of the aid drove child poverty back up to 12.4% in 2022. Tax expenditures represent the largest drop in federal spending on children between 2022 and 2023, while there were also sharp declines in spending on nutrition and more modest changes in education funding, according to the Urban Institute.
