Germany blocks sale of VW gas turbine business to China

London/Berlin CNN —Germany has blocked the sale of a Volkswagen subsidiary to China on national security grounds, delivering a fresh blow to the already tense relationship with its biggest trading partner. MAN Energy Solutions, part of the Volkswagen Group, said in June 2023 that it planned to sell its gas turbines business to Chinese state-owned CSIC Longjiang GH Gas Turbine Co (GHGT). But a German government review, initiated in September, raised concerns that China might use the gas turbines to power warships, according to Reuters. In November 2022, Germany blocked the sale of one of its semiconductor factories to a Chinese-owned tech company, also citing security concerns. “(We) will now initiate a structured process to close-down the gas turbine division, which will take place over the coming months,” the company added in a statement shared with CNN.

Messi missed Argentina’s opener but penalty king Emiliano Martinez saved Argentina’s blushes, stopping Ecuador twice to see his side progress to the last four. Every time Messi floated wide to try to get on the ball in space, Ecuador closed down with multiple defenders. Lisando Martinez, unmarked at the far post, calmly headed the ball into the net to score his first goal for Argentina. Through the first 30 minutes, Ecuador had fairly good control of the game. On the ball, Ecuador was pushing quickly up the field, especially through the left side and Jeremy Sarmiento.

Joe Biden refuses to drop out of the presidential race even as some liberals, rattled by the incumbent’s frightening debate performance last week, keep pressuring him to do so. The inertia of a presidential campaign is one of the most powerful forces in politics. Furthermore, all serious presidential contenders, particularly those who hold or have already held the office — this year, we have both — have a God complex. There are throngs of advisers, boosters and confidants around Biden to keep that doubt at bay; to introduce it is blasphemy. Biden can’t be forced out of the race; he would have to be persuaded to leave it.

Jamaica was hammered by a surge of water, damaging winds and flooding rainfall on Wednesday as Hurricane Beryl delivered a glancing blow when it passed just south of the coast, claiming at least one life on the island. The effects of the storm, a Category 4, struck Jamaica just days after it swept through the eastern Caribbean, killing at least seven other people. Ahead of the hurricane, Jamaica closed its airports and issued an evacuation order for low-lying and flood-prone areas. The storm was the strongest to approach the island in over a decade. The last time a major hurricane passed within 70 miles of Jamaica was in 2007, and it has been even longer since one made landfall.

Keir Starmer, the leader of Britain’s Labour Party, nodded sympathetically as a young mother recalled, in harrowing terms, how she had watched closed-circuit television footage of the fatal stabbing of her 21-year-old son, whose heart was pierced with a single blow. “Thank you for that,” a somber Mr. Starmer said to the woman and other relatives of victims of knife attacks, as they stood around a wooden table last week, discussing ways to combat violent crime. “It’s really, really powerful.”It was not the most feel-good campaign event for a candidate the week before an election that his opposition party is widely expected to win. But it was entirely in character for Mr. Starmer, a 61-year-old former human rights lawyer who still behaves less like a politician than a prosecutor bringing a case. Earnest, intense, practical and not brimming with charisma, Mr. Starmer finds himself on the cusp of a potential landslide victory without the star power that marked previous British leaders on the doorstep of power, whether Margaret Thatcher, the 1980s free-market champion, or Tony Blair, the avatar of “Cool Britannia.”

With Monday’s Supreme Court presidential immunity ruling likely preventing a trial in the federal election subversion case before the election, Trump is poised to avoid pre-election trials in the three most significant criminal prosecutions he faces. It will determine Trump’s legal fate. Read previewThe Supreme Court isn't willing to blow up the internet just yet. The Texas law applied to social media companies with at least 50 million users, while Florida included companies with over 100 million users. As Judge Andrew Oldham wrote in his appeals court decision upholding the Texas law, the Florida law "prohibits all censorship of some speakers," while the Texas law "prohibits some censorship of all speakers." Part of the reason the Supreme Court might have agreed to hear the cases to begin with is because there was a circuit split between the states. But Calvert said on Monday that because the high court's decision is so favorable to the social media companies, that's not likely to happen.

Voters are being asked to choose their representatives in the 577-seat National Assembly, the country’s lower and more prominent house of Parliament. If a new majority of lawmakers opposed to Mr. Macron is ushered in, he will be forced to appoint a political adversary as prime minister, dramatically shifting France’s domestic policy and muddling its foreign policy. That will be especially so if he is forced to govern alongside Jordan Bardella, the 28-year-old president of the National Rally. If no clear majority emerges, the country could be headed for months of political deadlock or turmoil. Mr. Macron, who has ruled out resigning, cannot call new legislative elections for another year.

Scientists have now found evidence that a group of the winged travelers flew over 2,600 miles (about 4,200 kilometers) across the Atlantic Ocean without stopping, according to a new study published June 25 in the journal Nature Communications. The insects, which are not usually found in South America, were worn out with holes and tears in their wings. Tracking a butterflyResearchers took a few crucial steps to confirm these out-of-place butterflies really did travel across the ocean. By this method, the scientists concluded the butterflies’ birthplace to be in either Western Europe, North Africa or West Africa, she added. The researchers hope to use the same techniques to investigate the migration patterns of other species of butterflies, she added.

CNN —A major Supreme Court ruling Friday that shifted power from the executive branch to the judiciary stands to transform how the federal government works. By overturning a 1984 precedent, the court’s conservative majority has made countless regulations vulnerable to legal challenge. The Supreme Court ruling could boost efforts by conservatives who have taken aim at the Biden Environmental Protection Agency’s rules limiting planet-warming pollution from vehicles, oil and gas wells and pipelines, and power plants. The ruling has injected legal uncertainty into regulations of all types, including those on technology, labor, the environment and health care. But the Supreme Court has yet to decide a case heard this term that might gut that limitation.

Read previewIssues with charging has nearly half of electric-vehicle owners in the US considering going back to fossil fuels — the latest bad sign for the EV transition. A recent consumer study conducted by McKinsey found that 46% of US EV owners surveyed were likely to switch back to a gas-powered vehicle, compared to a global average of 29% of EV owners who said they would likely switch back to an internal-combustion engine. Respondents said the top reason for ditching their EVs was a lack of charging infrastructure. Though a push from the automotive industry to fund charging infrastructure has led to a boom in public charging stations in the last two years, these have largely been money-losing ventures. The Biden administration has set aside $7.5 billion for charging infrastructure and has said it would add 500,000 EV charging stations by 2030.

A general view of the U.S. Supreme Court building in Washington, U.S., June 1, 2024. WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Friday overturned a 40-year-old precedent that has been a target of the right because it is seen as bolstering the power of "deep state" bureaucrats. It is the latest in a series of rulings in which the conservative justices have taken aim at the power of federal agencies. The ruling was 6-3 with the conservative justices in the majority and liberal justices dissenting. The Trump administration had embraced the war on "deep state" agency power, selecting judicial nominees in part based on their hostility to the federal bureaucracy.
