Lilly expects the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to decide by the end of this year whether to approve donanemab. The company had previously reported that 24% of the overall donanemab treatment group had brain swelling. The deaths of three trial patients were linked to the treatment, researchers reported. For high tau patients, donanemab was shown to slow disease progression by about 17%, while the benefit was 35% for those with low-to-intermediate tau levels. Both medications are also being studied in large trials to see if they have an impact on delaying onset of Alzheimer's disease symptoms.

London CNN —A rising number of British stores are using a facial recognition system powered by artificial intelligence to identify repeat shoplifters in what one human rights group has called the spread of “airport-style security” on the high street. Human rights groups say this type of technology flouts people’s right to privacy and often makes mistakes. Facewatch also retains shoppers’ data for only two weeks — half the amount of time a regular “CCTV” security camera in the UK typically stores footage. But Gordon is confident Facewatch’s system doesn’t have any bias and stresses that it is supported by human staff who’ve been trained in facial recognition. Last month, the European Parliament agreed to ban the use of real-time, AI-powered facial recognition technology in public spaces.

The UK-based budget airline canceled 1,700 flights between July and September, per Reuters. Disgruntled passengers stranded by a budget airline's flight cancellations are blasting the "disgusting" hotels the carrier put them in. Of the 90,000 flights scheduled for the rest of July and August, British budget airline EasyJet has canceled around 1,700 flights, predominantly from London's Gatwick airport, Reuters reported on Monday. Twitter user @angeldelight28 shared pictures of the hotel room she said EasyJet had put her up in after her flight to Liverpool was canceled, leaving her stranded in Larnaca, Cyprus. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday asked a federal judge in Ohio to block Medicare's new powers to negotiate drug prices before Oct. 1. They argued that the drug negotiations violate the First and Fifth Amendments of the U.S. Constitution, as well as the separation of powers. The Chamber asked Judge Thomas Rose on Wednesday to block the negotiations before they get under way because they violate the due process clause. Drugmaker Abbvie , a member of the U.S. Chamber and the Dayton, Ohio area chamber, fears that its blood cancer drug Imbruvica will be selected for the negotiations this fall. The Medicare drug price negotiations do not provide these safeguards and impose price caps that are well below a drug's market value, the chamber's lawyers said.

How often should you poop?
  + stars: | 2023-07-12 | by ( Kristen Rogers | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
CNN —Everyone poops, but it turns out we don’t all need to poop every day. It’s helpful to know what your poop looks like in addition to just how often you poop. But if you’re excessively straining when trying to poop or feeling like you haven’t totally emptied your bowel, you may need to make changes to either poop more often or have healthier stool quality, experts said. But if we’re stressed, hormones and nervous system changes can prevent poop from moving toward the rectum, resulting in constipation. But don’t delay — the right time to poop is when you’re feeling the urge to do so, experts said.

Farmers serves 100,000 customers in Florida but said there will be no impact to customers who use Farmers’ owned subsidiaries like Foremost Signature and Bristol West. “Such policies will continue to be available to serve the insurance needs of Floridians,” Farmers Insurance spokesperson Trevor Chapman said in a statement. Florida requires affected policyholders to receive a 120-day notice that their policies aren’t being renewed. Earlier this week, Farmers limited new homeowners insurance policies in California because of high costs and wildfire risks.

June 30 (Reuters) - The U.S. government on Friday revised its guidance for its Medicare drug price negotiation process, allowing drug companies to publicly discuss the talks, but did not make major changes likely to convince drugmakers to end their suits seeking to halt the program. In September, the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) will select 10 of the Medicare program's costliest prescription medicines and negotiate price cuts to go into effect for 2026. That guidance precluded drug makers from talking about the negotiations and required them to eventually destroy data received from CMS. Industry group the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) made an additional claim that the price negotiation program violates the U.S. Constitution's Eight Amendment, which protects against excessive fines. The Biden administration's drug pricing reform aims to save $25 billion annually by 2031 through price negotiations for the drugs most costly to Medicare.

You Really Are a Tick Magnet

The tiny arachnids spread a variety of harmful diseases, as they expand their range to new areas. But two scientists recently set out on a counterintuitive mission to collect as many bloodsucking ticks as possible. Dr. Lihou is a veterinary parasitologist who studies ticks, and Dr. England is an ecologist who studies electricity and electroreception. The resulting paper, published Friday in the journal Current Biology, provides a new reason to worry about ticks. While the finding may add to ticks’ terrifying attributes, this knowledge could also be used to improve antistatic tick defenses.

Medicare on Friday said it will allow pharmaceutical companies to publicly discuss the program's historic drug price negotiations, dropping a confidentiality requirement that the industry argued violated the First Amendment in lawsuits filed this month. It also required companies to destroy any information within 30 days if the drug is no longer selected for negotiations. The Inflation Reduction Act, passed last year, empowered Medicare to directly negotiate with pharmaceutical companies over prices for the first time. "Pharmaceutical companies have made record profits for decades," Becerra said in a statement. "Now they're lining up to block this Administration's work to negotiate for better drug prices for our families.

GLASTONBURY, England, June 21 (Reuters) - Tens of thousands of music fans streamed into Worthy Farm in southwest England on Wednesday at the start of Glastonbury, the beloved music festival that will feature Elton John, Guns N' Roses and the Arctic Monkeys this weekend. Elated fans wore sun hats and lugged camping gear to the site of the world's biggest open-air arts and music festival, primed to witness hundreds of acts over five days culminating in British singer Elton John's last ever UK show on Sunday night. Heavy showers fell over the 900-acre grassy expanse of Glastonbury on Wednesday, although fans, many equipped with Wellington boots to wade through muddy fields, appeared undeterred. Glastonbury, founded by Michael Eavis 53 years ago, typically sells out before any headliners have been announced, given the strength of previous line-ups. The pharmaceutical industry's largest lobbying group and two other organizations Wednesday sued the Biden administration over Medicare's new powers to slash drug prices for seniors under the Inflation Reduction Act. Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, along with the National Infusion Center Association and the Global Colon Cancer Association, argue that the Medicare negotiations with drugmakers violate the U.S. Constitution, in a complaint filed in federal district court in Texas. The groups asked the court to declare the program unconstitutional and prevent the Department of Health and Human Services from implementing Medicare negotiations without "adequate procedural protections" for drug manufacturers. It marks the fourth lawsuit challenging the controversial provision of the Inflation Reduction Act, which became law last summer in a major victory for President Joe Biden and Democratic lawmakers. The lawsuit also argues the policy violates due process by denying pharmaceutical companies and the public input on how Medicare negotiations will be implemented.

The Sad Story Behind a Fossil’s ‘Grin’

Before the dawn of the dinosaurs, the world belonged to reptiles called rhynchosaurs. They were the size of pigs and thrived all over the planet 225 million to 245 million years ago during the mid- and late Triassic Period. They may get overshadowed by the earliest dinosaurs, he suggests, although they make up 90 percent of vertebrate fossils in some Triassic digs. This highly unusual way of eating may have doomed rhynchosaurs as they reached old age. Unable to bite their food, these old rhynchosaurs may have starved to death, Dr. Benton said.
