When he announced his decision to provide Abrams tanks to Ukraine, President Joe Biden made a point to say Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin had recommended the move. Biden wasn’t initially sold on sending the tanks, despite pressure to do so to give cover to Germany to send Ukraine some Leopard 2 tanks, the officials said. But because Germany had said it would send Leopards to Ukraine if the U.S. agreed to commit tanks, too, the U.S. promise of a future delivery opened the door for Germany to send tanks to Ukraine now. In the case of the tanks, U.S. military leaders argued the Leopards and the U.K.’s Challengers were much better options. Military leaders, namely Milley, also have been more publicly vocal about the importance of potential talks to end the war.
In New York City apartments, dining rooms are as rare and coveted as banquettes are in restaurants. Administrators at a Virginia elementary school were warned three separate times that a 6-year-old student had a gun or was threatening people before he allegedly shot his teacher, an attorney said. “This tragedy was entirely preventable if the school administrators responsible for school safety had done their part and had taken action when they had knowledge of imminent danger,” Diane Toscano , an attorney representing teacher Abigail Zwerner , said Wednesday. “But instead they failed to act and Abby was shot.”
The Virginia teacher who was shot by her 6-year-old student texted a loved one before she was wounded that the boy was armed and that school officials were failing to act, according to a source close to the situation. "At least one administrator was notified of a possible weapon," Parker said in a video reviewed by NBC News. The principal and vice principal of Richneck did not respond to requests for comment from the Post on the teacher’s account. It is set to reopen on Monday and will be outfitted with a metal detector, school officials have said. The district has secured funding for 90 state-of-the-art metal detectors that will be placed at all district schools, officials said.
Sen. Josh Hawley is trying to taunt Nancy Pelosi by renaming a stock trading ban bill. His PELOSI Act is a retread of a proposal that garnered no support in the last Congress. House lawmakers recently reintroduced a bipartisan stock trading proposal with broader backing. Pelosi famously pushed back against any stock trading prohibitions during the 117th Congress — "We're a free market economy." Meanwhile, Democratic Rep. Abigail Spanberger of Virginia and Republican Rep. Chip Roy of Texas have reintroduced a more comprehensive stock trading ban bill (H.R.
"This tragedy was entirely preventable if the school administrator responsible for school safety had done their part and taken action when they had knowledge of imminent danger," said Toscano. She did not say what damages she would seek on behalf of the teacher, who was wounded in the chest. Toscano said another student told a third teacher that the boy showed him a gun during recess and threatened to shoot him if he told anyone. A fourth employee who learned of the threat asked for permission to search the boy, but was denied by the same school safety administrator, the lawyer said. Tragically, almost an hour later, violence struck Ridge Elementary School," Toscano said.

The West needs to ramp up military assistance to Ukraine to ensure the war with Russia does not turn into a bloody, open-ended stalemate, British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said Tuesday during a visit to Washington. The United Kingdom also said it would provide more heavy artillery and ammunition to help Ukraine roll back Russian forces from its territory. “The U.K. has been very much on the front foot” in its security assistance to Ukraine, Cleverly said. He stopped short of urging the U.S., Germany or other governments also to supply Ukraine with new tanks or other more advanced weapons. Germany has faced growing calls to send its Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine and to allow other countries that have Leopards to provide Kyiv with them.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Parents at the Virginia elementary school where a 6-year-old boy shot a first-grade teacher this month are demanding answers for how the child managed to use the weapon after his backpack was searched. If the backpack was searched, they didn’t search it right,” said Desiree Yvette, whose 6-year-old daughter witnessed the Jan. 6 shooting at Richneck Elementary School in which Abigail Zwerner was critically wounded. Thomas Britton, 35, questioned the steps school officials took after they learned the child may have taken a gun into the school. “Once the news dropped it, that’s when a lot of parents started rushing to the school with mass confusion,” Garcia said. Drew said Sunday the investigation entails looking into the boy and his parent’s history.

The FDA later backed the vaccine panel, authorizing a new formulation of the booster shots. “The people who are talking about why young people need it are missing the point,” he said, referring to the booster. Levy, the director of the Precision Vaccines Program at Boston Children’s Hospital, continues to encourage Covid boosters for everyone who is eligible. Relatively few people in the U.S. have had updated boosters.

The 6-year-old boy accused of shooting his Virginia teacher Friday with a gun he took from home is unlikely to be charged, but his parents could be criminally culpable depending on if they properly secured the weapon, experts said. The boy shot Zwerner with a 9mm Taurus firearm he obtained from his home, Drew said. NBC News legal analyst Danny Cevallos said it’s highly unlikely the boy will be charged, even in juvenile court. In recent years, several adults have been charged in Virginia after a child has fired an unsecured gun. In October 2013, the Virginian-Pilot reported the parents of an elementary school student in Norfolk were charged with child neglect after their son brought a handgun to school.

Jan 9 (Reuters) - Police on Monday hailed a 25-year-old Virginia teacher as a hero for evacuating students from her classroom even after she was shot by a 6-year-old student. Meanwhile the 6-year-old boy was in temporary custody at a medical facility, and a judge had until Tuesday to determine whether to extend a temporary order keeping him in custody, Drew said. "She made sure that every one of those kids were out of that room, that she was the last one to leave. And she took it upon herself in that situation, after suffering a gunshot wound, to make sure that her students ... were safe," Drew said. Zwerner, who took a defensive posture, was shot through the hand and into the chest.
House Republicans voted on Monday to hobble the Office of Congressional Ethics. George Santos, facing multiple investigations and ethics complaints, called the changes "fantastic." The Office of Congressional Ethics, first established in 2008, is a quasi-independent body tasked with investigating allegations of misconduct against members of Congress. It then makes a determination as to whether those allegations are worth investigating further, at which point it makes a referral to the House Ethics Committee, which is evenly divided between Republicans and Democrats. In 2017, House Republicans voted in conference to subsume the office under the House Ethics Committee, effectively neutering it.
