Russia and Ukraine have exchanged threats this week to ships sailing through the Black Sea. The Kremlin then went much further, warning it may attack any vessels it believes are bound for Ukraine, effectively turning the Black Sea into a no man's land. They added that Moscow even published a video claiming to have detected and detonated an alleged Ukrainian sea mine. "Our information indicates that Russia laid additional sea mines in the approaches to Ukrainian ports. Many airlines, corporate fliers and governments see so-called sustainable aviation fuel, or SAF, as a way to reduce aviation’s contribution to global warming. It recently converted an oil refinery in California and is expanding its refineries in Singapore and Rotterdam. We worked on a former fossil-fuel refinery and converted that into a renewable refinery. The carbon footprint of aviation can be affected today from today’s SAF technology. It will continue to incentivize current SAF production, but it will be difficult to be the impetus for future production.

WASHINGTON/BAGHDAD July 19 (Reuters) - The United States has barred 14 Iraqi banks from conducting dollar transactions, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday, citing U.S. officials. The United States uncovered information that the Iraqi banks engaged in money laundering and fraudulent transactions, some of which may have involved sanctioned individuals and raised concerns that Iran could benefit, the newspaper said. The Iraqi government, the U.S. Treasury Department and the New York Fed did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Iran has been unable to access billions of dollars in assets in several countries due to U.S. sanctions. The United States has insisted that oil-rich Iraq, the OPEC group's second-largest producer, moves towards self-sufficiency.

ISLAMABAD, July 19 (Reuters) - Pakistan will open criminal proceedings against former prime minister Imran Khan on charges of exposing official secrets, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah said on Wednesday, the latest in a string of cases the former premier has been facing. The case is related to diplomatic correspondence between Washington and Islamabad, which Khan said early last year was part of a U.S. conspiracy to topple his government. Sanaullah said the principal secretary also testified that Khan told him he had lost the copy of the letter when he was asked for its return. "It is a crime to expose an official secret," the interior minister said, adding the state will be filing the charges in the court against Khan. The secrecy charge is the latest in a multitude of charges Khan has faced since his ouster, including graft, murder and sedition.

For instance, what if China seeks to take the island by force and Washington opts to not respond? Published in 2021, “2034,” is basically a beach read about how we get to nuclear war. In “The Avoidable War,” Rudd cautions that the incentives for Beijing and Washington to escalate hostilities, whether to save lives or save face, “could prove irresistible.” Ackerman and Stavridis follow that script. Both the United States and China view themselves in exceptional terms, Allison explains, as nations of destiny. “China will be a falling power far sooner than most people think,” Brands and Beckley declare.

In the realm of defense, the alliance was not as advertised. The war in Ukraine, for all the talk of Europe stepping up, has left that asymmetry essentially untouched. Far from a costly charity program, NATO secures American influence in Europe on the cheap. Before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, roughly half of European military spending went to American manufacturers. Yet already there are signs that NATO is making headway in getting Europe to follow its lead in the theater.

HAVANA, July 11 (Reuters) - Cuban authorities on Tuesday said the U.S. recently had a nuclear-powered submarine at its military base at Guantanamo Bay and called the action a "provocative escalation" of tensions weeks after Washington alleged that there was a Chinese spy base on the island. Washington did not confirm that there was a submarine at the naval base. It said Cuba was looking to distract from the two-year anniversary of largest street protests seen in Cuba since Fidel Castro's 1959 revolution. Critics have said the Guantanamo Bay prison has been used for arbitrary detention and torture of people suspected of terrorism. In June, Havana and Beijing rejected reports citing U.S. officials alleging that China was using Cuba as a spy base.

Such a penalty would be far higher than any previously imposed by Brussels. Fourth of July gas prices take almost unprecedented plunge

During the week ending June 26, the average gas price was $3.57 a gallon, according to the US Energy Information Administration. Although pump prices have retreated from last year’s record highs, gas prices were cheaper in the summer of 2021 and certainly in 2020 when Covid-19 shut down large swaths of the economy. Pump prices plunge in Ohio, CaliforniaStill, over the past 12 months, gas prices are down in all 50 states, according to AAA. Washington recently replaced California with the unwanted distinction of having America’s most expensive gas prices. Hong Kong CNN —Nvidia warned Wednesday that if the United States imposes new restrictions on the export of AI chips to China, it would result in a “permanent loss of opportunities” for US industry. The rules, as reported, could make it harder for companies like Nvidia (NVDA) to sell advanced chips to China. Fueled by a boom in demand for its AI chips, the company briefly hit a market capitalization of $1 trillion in late May. We do not anticipate any immediate material impact on our financial results,” Kress added. Chinese AI stocks suffered much heavier losses.

The increase in Los Angeles mirrors trends playing out in cities across the country, including Phoenix, as a housing shortage has led to rising costs, squeezing families. In Los Angeles, volunteers fan out over a couple of nights each January to visually count people who appear to be living outdoors or in vehicles. Washington, D.C., has already reported an increase of 11 percent, while the Phoenix area said its homeless population was up 7 percent. Los Angeles is hardly the only American city to struggle with homelessness, but its homeless population is disproportionately large, and about 30 percent of the nation’s homeless population lives in California. As a result, Los Angeles is a kind of large-scale test case for which solutions work and which don’t.

The weakness in Nvidia's stock — down around 1.8%, at $411 a share, in late trading Wednesday — may prove temporary as a result. Nvidia downplays possible U.S. chip export restrictions
  + stars: | 2023-06-28 | by ( Kif Leswing | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Nvidia CFO Colette Kress downplayed the effect of the potential export restrictions at a financial conference on Wednesday, saying that they would not have an "immediate financial impact" but that further restrictions could hurt the company's growth in the future. "We are aware of reports that the U.S. Department of Commerce is considering further controls that may restrict exports of A800 and our H800 products to China," Kress said, referring to the company's chips. And the impact on our future business and financial results is there," Kress continued. Nvidia is the leader in the parts needed to build advanced AI systems, and AI engineers covet the company's A100 and new H100 chips. But according to the Journal, new Commerce Department limits could restrict the export of even those chips.
