Judges can threaten gag order violators with fines or jail time, but jailing a presidential candidate could prompt serious political blowback and pose logistical hurdles. A gag order may also slow down the case because it's likely Trump either violates it and the judge will want to punish him or Trump will challenge the order in advance, he said. In one case, a federal appeals court in 1987 lifted a gag order on U.S. Rep. Harold Ford Sr., a Tennessee Democrat charged in a fraud case. Ford’s gag order prohibited him from even sharing his opinion of or discussing facts of the case. He said he was dubious that Trump’s attacks, “while in very poor taste,” posed the kind of danger to merit a gag order.

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin is in Israel on Friday for meetings with senior government leaders and to see firsthand some of the U.S. weapons and security assistance that Washington rapidly delivered to Israel in the first week of its war with the militant Hamas group. Austin is the second high-level U.S. official sent by President Joe Biden to visit Israel in two days. His quick trip from Brussels, where he was attending a NATO defense ministers meeting, came a day after Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in the region. Gaza's Hamas rulers responded by calling on Palestinians to “remain steadfast in your homes and to stand firm" against Israel. Within hours after the brutal Hamas attack across the border into Israel, the U.S. moved warships and aircraft to the region.

AdvertisementAdvertisementOn Sunday, Israel declared a state of war and a day later announced a "complete siege" of Gaza . Buckner pointed to signs of escalations across Israel's borders that could tilt a possible Israeli-Hamas war into a regional conflict. Biden said this week he will ask Congress to send Israel additional aid in the wake of Hamas' terror attacks. Between 2001 and 2020, Israel received more military aid from the US than all other nations combined. Despite concerns that Israel will continue killing civilians and children in Gaza, there is bipartisan support for aid to Israel. In 2016, the US signed its third 10-year Memorandum of Understanding on military aid to Israel, pledging to send it $38 billion between 2019 and 2028. In 2022, the US spent a total of $4.8 billion on military, economic, and missile defense aid for Israel.

A newly remodeled Ford F250 Super Duty truck is displayed at the new Louisville Ford truck plant in Louisville, Kentucky, U.S. September 30, 2016. UAW President Shawn Fain on Wednesday ordered a strike at Ford's Kentucky Truck factory after Ford negotiators did not present a richer contract proposal. About 4,600 Ford workers could be idled because their jobs depend on production of Super Duty pickups and large Lincoln and Ford SUVs at Kentucky Truck, said Ford manufacturing vice president Bryce Currie. Already, 13,000 workers at Ford suppliers have been furloughed because of earlier UAW walkouts at two Ford assembly plants, Ford supply chain chief Liz Door said. Fain and other UAW officials called a meeting with Ford at on Wednesday evening and demanded a new offer, which Ford did not have, a Ford official said.

Around 8,700 Ford workers Wednesday evening walked off the job at the automaker's Kentucky truck plant — its largest and most profitable globally — after the UAW said Ford refused further concessions in contract bargaining. "It's time for a fair contract at Ford and the rest of the Big Three," he added. Ford was apparently caught off guard by the strike at its Kentucky plant, which generates $25 billion in annual revenue, roughly a sixth of the company's global automotive revenue. The USS Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group was deployed in the eastern Mediterranean amid a growing crisis in Israel. Carrier strike groups host significant airpower and firepower, and the Ford's new technological capabilities make it a major presence. US officials announced the movement of the carrier strike group toward Israel on Sunday, the day after Hamas carried out deadly terror attacks against the US ally. The amount of firepower each vessel brings adds up, especially considering the capabilities of the air wing aboard USS Gerald R. Ford. It set out on a short maiden deployment last year and its first full deployment as part of a fully certified carrier strike group earlier this year.

The first plane carrying advanced U.S. weapons landed at an air base in southern Israel, the Israel Defense Forces said Wednesday. They are expected to reach the Mediterranean Sea in roughly two weeks, defense officials said, potentially putting two aircraft carrier strike groups, or about a dozen warships, near Israel for a potential response to the crisis inside Israel. The USS Gerald R. Ford and its accompanying ships arrived near Israel on Tuesday, the Pentagon announced. U.S. national security adviser Jake Sullivan said Tuesday there were no current plans to send U.S. ground troops into Israel. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin earlier this week offered Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant planning and intelligence support from special-operations commandos to help Israel deal with a deepening hostage crisis.

The Navy's most advanced aircraft carrier and its strike group arrived in the eastern Mediterranean Sea on Tuesday, where it's been positioned to deter anyone from capitalizing on the chaos of the Israel-Hamas war. US Central Command said the USS Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group was among several forces deployed to the area in order "to deter any actor seeking to escalate the situation or widen this war." The forces included the actual aircraft carrier and support aircraft, the Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Normandy, and the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers USS Thomas Hudner, USS Ramage, USS Carney, and USS Roosevelt. US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said on Sunday the USS Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group would be sent to the region. US defense officials are still considering sending another aircraft carrier to the region, in addition to the Ford.

The U.S. carrier strike group sent toward Israel as a deterrent measure against hostile regional groups arrived Tuesday afternoon, the Pentagon announced. The USS Gerald R. Ford, an aircraft carrier, and its accompanying ships were operating in the Mediterranean when the Biden administration directed them toward the Middle East shortly after Hamas attacked Israel on Saturday. “The arrival of these highly capable forces to the region is a strong signal of deterrence should any actor hostile to Israel consider trying to take advantage of this situation,” said Army Gen. Erik Kurilla, commander, U.S. Central Command, which is responsible for U.S. military operations in the Middle East, said in a statement. The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, another carrier, which was previously scheduled to travel to the Mediterranean, is expected to leave the U.S. later this week.
