Fires were set at three ballot boxes in the area in the past three weeks. An “incendiary device” found attached to the side of a ballot drop box in Portland, Oregon, early Monday damaged ballots, but most were unaffected because of fire suppressant installed in the ballot box. Investigators have also linked the two incidents to a third ballot box fire on October 8, also in Vancouver, which is just across the Columbia River from Portland. All ballot boxes in Multnomah and Clark counties – where Portland and Vancouver are located, respectively – have fire suppressant installed, election officials said at a news conference Monday. In Clark County, Washington, 60% of the ballots received are from ballot drop boxes and 40% are received by mail, according to Clark County Auditor Greg Kimsey.

BAE Systems is one of the largest defense contractors in Europe. Its subsidiary, BAE Systems Submarines, headquartered in Barrow-in-Furness, builds and assembles the UK’s nuclear submarines. “There is no nuclear risk,” Cumbria Police said in a statement on X. NEW YORK — A woman who owned a New York City day care center where a toddler died after ingesting fentanyl pleaded guilty to federal drug charges Tuesday. More than a year after the September 2023 death of 22-month-old Nicholas Dominici, Grei Mendez entered the guilty plea in Manhattan to charges including conspiracy to distribute narcotics resulting in death. Earlier this month, her husband, Felix Herrera-Garcia, was sentenced to 45 years in prison after pleading guilty to drug charges and causing bodily harm. Mendez said her husband encouraged her to open the day care center, and she believed he was doing it to help her. Three other children exposed to the fentanyl at the day care survived after medics administered the overdose-reversing drug Narcan.

A police officer and a suspected shooter were injured Tuesday after gunfire erupted at a Midtown Atlanta building occupied by a Four Seasons hotel and residences, authorities said. The officer was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said at a news conference. Police responded to the high rise after 10 a.m. following a dispute between a Four Seasons worker and the man on the 33rd floor, which is occupied by residences, Schierbaum said. The Four Seasons hotel takes up 19 of 53 stories of the high rise and occupies 244 rooms, 23 of which are designated suites. Brian Carr, spokesperson for the Midtown Alliance in Atlanta, said the high rise also includes 96 residences and 97,000 square feet of office space.

The owner of a Boston area pizza chain who forced undocumented victims to work for him in grueling conditions, and under violent physical abuse and threats of deportation, has been sentenced to over eight years in prison. He was convicted in a jury trial on three counts of forced labor and three counts of attempted forced labor in June. The sentencing of Papantoniadis marks just the latest in a string of complaints over labor practices at his businesses. In 2019, the business owners were ordered to pay more than $300,000 in back wages, according to NBC Boston. A slain woman's body was found inside a guest room at a chic spa and resort in the Hamptons, authorities said Tuesday. Two police officers shot back during the exchange. One officer and the suspect were taken to a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, but authorities didn’t know whether either were shot, Schierbaum said. Officers were told that the suspect had been involved in an altercation with a hotel employee, he said. The suspect eventually raised his hands, and a SWAT team went to his door and took him into custody, Schierbaum said.

London CNN —The teenager charged with the murder of three young girls in a July stabbing attack at a dance class in northwest England will face a terrorism charge, British prosecutors announced Tuesday. The new charges he faces in relation to the attack in the town of Southport, England, are in addition to three charges of murder, 10 charges of attempted murder and one charge of possession of a knife. “Searches of Axel Rudakubana’s home address resulted in an unknown substance being found – testing confirmed the substance was ricin,” Kennedy told reporters at a news conference. The attack on July 29 has not been declared a terrorist incident, the police chief said. The matter for which Axel Rudakubana has been charged with under the Terrorism Act does not require motive to be established.

CNN —A man has died and up to nine other people are missing after a 10-story hotel collapsed in Argentina. Firefighters, paramedics and police were working to remove debris in order to reach people who are thought to be buried. The victim is thought to have been an 80-year-old man who lived in the building next to the collapsed hotel, minister of security of the province of Buenos Aires Javier Alonso said on the TN news channel. The missing include workers from a construction site at the hotel that was apparently operating “clandestinely, without complying with municipal regulations,” according to the statement. Emergency workers are trying to free up to nine people believed to be trapped in the rubble.
