Election observers worry that delays in counting mail ballots could give the public a false sense of who’s winning the election. In Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, election officials are still barred from beginning to process mail ballots before 7 a.m. on Election Day – even though election workers in both states have clamored for change. Georgia's State Election Board members discuss proposals for election rule changes at the State Capitol in Atlanta on September 20, 2024. The new law could delay by an hour or more – depending on the county – the posting of unofficial early results, state election officials have said. In Maricopa County, the general election ballot covers both sides of two pages – twice the length of the ballot voters encountered four years ago.

In the past, such a drumbeat of controversy in the final weeks of the campaign might have given voters pause, even prompting shifts in the race. “We are on overload with wild stories every news cycle,” said David Kochel, a longtime Republican strategist and a veteran of several presidential campaigns. You can’t keep up with it all, so a lot of people just tune it out.”Adding to it all was a moment far outside his control: Mr. Trump faced a second assassination attempt. It is unclear what — if anything — could reshuffle the race in such a fiercely polarized nation. In fact, views of Mr. Trump have improved from earlier this year when he was leading Mr. Biden, with more voters viewing him favorably now than they did several months ago.

The local police team responsible for the roof a shooter used to fire at ex-President Donald Trump on July 13 in Butler, Pennsylvania, had never spoken to the Secret Service prior to the attempted assassination, a report released by the Secret Service on Friday says. Among other errors, the report found that one local police entity working security at the Trump rally requested support from another local department without the Secret Service being aware. While investigating the incident, the Secret Service placed some officials, including the director of the Secret Service’s Pittsburgh Field Office, on leave. “The former president is getting everything that the current president has with respect to Secret Service assets,” Rowe said. Rowe also told reporters at a news conference Friday that the Secret Service did not deny security assets to the Trump campaign ahead of the July rally in Butler.

The main national body of the Teamsters union may have declined to endorse a candidate for the 2024 presidential election, but that hasn't stopped local units from doing so. The teamsters have generally backed Democrats for president in recent races. Harris enjoys broad support from other union groups including the AFL-CIO, the nation's largest labor group, the Service Employees International Union and the Culinary Workers Union. And while the Teamsters' official non-endorsement was a clear setback for Harris, the action has not stopped individual Teamsters units from offering their own statements of support.
