Stanford University’s board of trustees is investigating whether multiple research papers co-authored by the school’s president, neuroscientist Marc Tessier-Lavigne , contained altered images, raising concerns about the academic integrity of the leader of one of the world’s top research institutions. The board launched the review after the Stanford Daily, the school’s student newspaper, reported this week that a European scientific journal was reviewing one of Dr. Tessier-Lavigne’s papers and said that an expert on research misconduct also found potential errors in three other papers on which Dr. Tessier-Lavigne was co-author years ago.

[1/2] Bret Taylor, Co-CEO of Salesforce, speaks at the Viva Technology conference dedicated to innovation and startups at Porte de Versailles exhibition center in Paris, France June 15, 2022. Jefferies analysts said the surprise exit indicated that the "co-CEO model is not working with two departures in three years." Benioff tapped Taylor as co-CEO in 2021, to replace Oracle (ORCL.N) executive Keith Block who stepped down from the role just before the pandemic began. He was previously chief operating officer and chief product officer of the company. "We view this leadership change as a significant blow given his leadership role on product," Needham analysts said in a note.
Amazon France said there had been no sign of disruption to operations so far. Two years later, Laborde has opened what he says is the first alcohol-free wine store in a country renowned the world over for its Bordeaux red wines and white Burgundies. While non-alcoholic drinks have gained popularity elsewhere, they have lagged in France. As she tasted a glass of alcohol-free red wine, Helene Bourgy said the drink was a compromise that allowed for an alcohol-free but still “festive atmosphere”. Even if the French have been slow to take up non-alcoholic drinks, their wine consumption has fallen from 20th-century peaks.

The shot is based on lab-made viral proteins provided by Sanofi and an adjuvant ingredient from GSK that increases the immune response. Adapting the older protein technology chosen by Sanofi and GSK to a new virus variant requires several months longer than under the mRNA approach, which saw a breakthrough during the pandemic. Work on the shot by Sanofi and GSK, two of the world's largest vaccine makers by sales, was delayed repeatedly. The partners later pivoted to targeting the Beta variant, requiring months in additional development time. While the shot tested at the time was bivalent - meaning it was based both on original Wuhan strain of the virus and Beta - Sanofi and GSK later focused on a monovalent shot based on Beta only.
An early mover in the electric car race, Renault has fallen behind newer, more agile rivals like Tesla. But big question marks remain on its strained relationship with long-standing Japanese partner Nissan, as Renault looks for other outside investors for each of its divisions. Nissan (7201.T) is expected to take a stake in the EV venture, codenamed "Ampere", alongside other investors, though Renault will keep a majority stake. Renault CEO Luca De Meo said the group wanted to give the alliance a strong future and a "new chance". Aside from the Ampere EV unit and the combustion engine division, Renault will have an additional three businesses - the Alpine sports-car brand, financial services and new mobility and recycling activities.

The lawsuit, filed Friday in federal court in Chicago, came days after a study from the U.S. National Institute of Environmental Health Safety (NIEHS) finding that hair-straightening products may significantly increase the risk of uterine cancer among frequent users. The plaintiff, Jennifer Mitchell, said she was diagnosed with uterine cancer in 2018, after using L'Oreal's products since about 2000, when she was 10. Uterine cancer is the most common gynecologic cancer in the United States, according to federal government data, with rates rising, particularly among Black women. The company "profited, significantly" from "unethical and illegal conduct that caused plaintiff to purchase and habitually use a dangerous and defective product," the lawsuit said.

With more companies resuming business travel and people planning vacations, Visa Inc (<V.N>), Mastercard (<MA.N>) and American Express (<AXP.N>) are likely to see a jump in cross border volume, according to analysts. Cross border volumes are a measure of travel demand reflecting spending on cards outside the country they were issued. American Airlines (<AAL.O>), United Airlines Holdings (<UAL.O>) and Delta Air Lines (<DAL.N>) have also forecast strong profits for the rest of the year, in a sign that travel demand was offsetting concerns about expensive air fares. American Express will report its quarterly earnings on Friday, followed by Visa and Mastercard next week. AmEx shares have dropped 12%, while Mastercard and Visa are down 17% and 14% this year, respectively.

REUTERS/Benoit TessierPARIS, Oct 19 (Reuters) - The arrival of veggie meat dishes on Parisian steakhouse menus with names such as "tenderloin" and "flank" poses a challenge to French government efforts to ban meat names for plant-based products. The products of Redefine Meat made their debut in a Parisian restaurant this week after the Israeli startup firm struck a deal with importer Giraudi Meats to drive European distribution of its "New Meat" steak cuts produced on 3D printers. Beyond Meat (BYND.O), one of the world's leading plant-based meat producers, cut its revenue forecast last week. Redefine Meat sells its New Meat in almost 1,000 restaurants in Israel, Britain, the Netherlands and Germany, and they currently pay about $40 per kilo for its steak cuts.

Stanford University has apologized for limiting the admission of Jewish students in the past. Stanford University apologized for intentionally restricting the admission of Jewish students in the 1950s, a practice the institution admitted it historically denied. The apology, issued Wednesday, cited a report that detailed efforts in the early 1950s to limit the number of Jewish students on campus. Stanford University President Marc Tessier-Lavigne called the practice “appalling antisemitic activity” and listed steps the university plans to take to improve campus life for Jewish students.
Stanford University apologized Wednesday for limiting Jewish student admissions during the 1950s — a practice that the school long denied had taken place. Stanford had targeted specific high schools known to have significant populations of Jewish students, allowing the school to still "claim that the university did not impose a quota on Jewish students," the report said. It said that despite "decades of denials," a 1953 memo, dubbed the "Glover Memo," clearly reported Snyder's "intentions to act against Jewish students." "However, the report articulates how this effort to suppress Jewish enrollments had long-lasting effects and dissuaded some Jewish students from applying to Stanford in later years. “This is what we want for all members of the Stanford community,” she said, according to the outlet.

A bitcoin representation is seen in an illustration picture taken at La Maison du Bitcoin in Paris, France, June 23, 2017. "Bitcoin miners have continued to watch margins compress - the price of bitcoin has fallen, mining difficulty has risen and energy prices have soared," said Joe Burnett, head analyst at Blockware Solutions. That's put serious pressure on some players who bought expensive mining machines, or rigs, banking on rising bitcoin prices to recoup their investment. Shares of Marathon Digital (MARA.O), Riot Blockchain (RIOT.O) and Valkyrie Bitcoin Miners ETF (WGMI.O) have sunk more than 60% this year, for example, while crypto-mining data center operator Compute North filed for bankruptcy last week. "From managing their balance sheet, processing units and energy costs, miners will look to stay afloat regardless of current market conditions," he added.
