Summary IUCN releases biodiversity barometer during U.N. talksClimate change, pollution 'devastating' marine speciesDugongs number in just the hundreds in some regionsGENEVA, Dec 9 (Reuters) - The effects of human activity from climate change to pollution are "devastating" marine life, with nearly a tenth of underwater plants and animals assessed so far threatened with extinction, the latest Red List of Threatened Species showed on Friday. "It shows that we are having quite a devastating impact on marine species," Craig Hilton-Taylor, head of the IUCN Red List, told Reuters. Hilton-Taylor said the portion of marine species facing extinction was likely much higher than current data shows because those analysed so far have tended to be widespread fish species, not currently under threat. The latest list reviews abalone species, a type of mollusc sold as a luxury seafood item, for the first time and found that around 44% of them face extinction. "The awful status of these species should shock us and engage us for urgent action," said Amanda Vincent, chair of the IUCN Species Survival Commission Marine Conservation Committee.
PARIS, Dec 4 (Reuters) - Right-winger Eric Ciotti is in poll position to become the next leader of France's formerly heavyweight conservative Les Republicains (LR) party after winning a first round ballot of party members on Sunday. LR or its predecessors have governed France for much of its post-war history. "I want to be the candidate of hope and of the return of a big political family on the right," Ciotti said in a tweet following Sunday's vote. Both Ciotti, whose home base is the traditionally right-wing Nice region, and Retailleau are politically further to the right than outgoing LR leader Christian Jacob. LR remains a key force in parliament, however, as Macron - who lost his legislative majority in parliament - often relies on the party to get his government's bills voted through.
The 56-year-old LR veteran Ciotti, whose home-base is the right-wing Nice region, says he wants to stop what he calls a "migratory invasion." "We are together so that France remains France," Ciotti told a rally last month, saying that authority, identity and liberty were the pillars of his policy, with the fight against Islamism a key issue. LR has lost veteran figures to Macron's camp, including Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire and former prime minister Edouard Philippe. Nearly three quarters of LR voters consider LR cannot fly solo, an Odoxa poll for LCP showed last month. The favoured option for LR supporters would be an alliance with Macron's camp, but not far ahead of a deal with the RN.
Now, scientists have discovered a previously unknown species — the largest sea turtle found in present-day Europe ever to be identified. The unusual animal’s presence in this part of the prehistoric world revealed that giant turtles were more common than previously thought, according to the study. With these finds, the scientists observed more features not previously seen in any living or dead turtle species. Before this recent discovery, all prehistoric giant marine turtle discoveries were part of the same lineage as Archelon. Fragments of a giant turtle's pelvis and carapace are shown at the excavation site in northern Spain.
Shipping giants are racing to find scalable green alternatives to gas-guzzling container ships. Other shipping giants are betting big on green methanol fuel derived from agricultural waste. By comparison, conventional container ships can handle loads of over 38,000 tonnes. ©PIRIOU / courtesy of TransOceanic Wind TransportBut as more shoppers prioritize sustainability, some big name brands are pledging to use sustainable cargo ships once the designs become a reality.
A U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent and a suspected smuggler were dead Friday after a shootout off Puerto Rico’s coast, authorities said. Two other CBP agents were also injured in the gunfire, they said. A CBP agent was fatally shot, while one of at least two suspected smugglers also died, CBP spokesman Jeffrey Quiñones said, addressing reporters Thursday. The CBP Air and Marine Operations agency said in a tweet it was a marine interdiction agent who had died. “These are brave members of our Air and Marine Operations within @CBP," Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said in a statement shared on Twitter by a DHS spokesperson.
For more than 70 days this summer, a marine heatwave cooked the waters of the western Mediterranean. "We've been witnessing marine heatwaves during the last 20 years," said Garrabou, who's also coordinator of the T-MEDNet marine monitoring network. A 2016 marine heatwave along Chile's southern coast caused huge algae blooms that wiped out fish farms and cost the aquaculture industry some $800 million, said scientist Kathryn Smith with the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom. As the world warms, marine heatwaves are expected to become more frequent, according to the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Though economists have yet to account fully for the impacts of marine heatwaves, recent experience has many concerned.
The Group of Seven (G7), which includes the United States, Britain, Germany and France, agreed in September to enforce a low price on sales of Russian oil. And with just three weeks to go, time is running out to fully convince the shipping services industry it will work. Concerns are centred around a scenario in which insurers discover that oil in transit at sea, which was believed to have been sold below the price cap, was in fact sold above it. The official spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak about the matter. "This would be a bad development as no one will want uninsured ships sitting off coasts," he added.
Russian officials on Monday denied allegations that an elite marine unit had suffered catastrophic losses during an “incomprehensible” assault in eastern Ukraine. Officials responded to what pro-Russian military bloggers and Telegram channels said was an unsigned open letter from members of the 155th marine brigade of Russia’s Pacific Fleet. The letter alleged that the unit was ordered to take Pavlovka, but instead, half the unit’s equipment was destroyed over four days. Chief of the General Staff Gen. Valery Gerasimov and Lt. Gen. Rustam Muradov, commander of Russia’s eastern military district, were guilty of “hiding” the true number of losses, it added. Who is now destroying our people on the routes of evacuation of the wounded and the supply of ammunition,” the letter said.
LONDON, Nov 7 (Reuters) - Russia's defence ministry took the rare step on Monday of denying allegations that a naval infantry unit had suffered disastrous losses of men and equipment in a futile offensive in eastern Ukraine. It was addressed to Oleg Kozhemyako, governor of the far eastern Primorye region, thousands of miles from Ukraine, where the unit is based. Kozhemyako appeared to acknowledge the letter was genuine but said it exaggerated the scale of the true losses. The defence ministry statement, quoted by state-owned RIA news agency, rejected the assertion that the marines unit had suffered "high, pointless losses in people and equipment". I am sure that in any case the situation will be analysed and the competent authorities will give their assessment," he said.
LONDON, Oct 31 (Reuters) - Lloyd’s of London insurer Ascot is suspending writing cover for new shipments using the Ukrainian grains corridor in the Black Sea until it has more clarity about the situation there, a senior official said on Monday. Moscow said it was forced to pull out of the Black Sea grain shipping deal after blasts damaged Russian navy ships in the Crimean port of Sevastopol on Saturday. "From today we are pausing on quoting new shipments until we better understand the situation,” Ascot head of cargo Chris McGill told Reuters. Ascot and broker Marsh launched a facility for grain traders in late July to provide up to $50 million in cargo cover for every voyage. Russia's announcement on Saturday that it was suspending its role in the U.N.-backed programme that escorts cargo ships through the Black Sea fanned fears it would reimpose a blockade on Ukrainian grain.
SYDNEY, Oct 21 (Reuters) - Australia-based environmental artist Marina DeBris aims to portray the power of one person in the planet's fight against marine pollution with her latest sculpture showcased at a Sydney beach exhibition. "Just a drop in the ocean, Said 7.8 billion people" is on display at Sculpture by the Sea, which opened on Friday. DeBris, who begins her day by picking up rubbish washed ashore on beaches, has been transforming the trash into sculptures and wearable art since 2009. Her art has been called "trashion", which she says has raised awareness about single-use plastics and pollution in the oceans. A study by the University of New South Wales last year found 84% of rubbish found on Australian beaches was plastic and about 40% of marine debris was caused by littering.
Laro Pilartes / 500Px | 500Px | Getty ImagesThe U.S. Department of Energy said $35 million in funding would be made available "to advance tidal and river current energy systems" under plans it hopes will provide a shot in the arm to a sector whose current footprint is tiny. In a statement Tuesday outlining the move, the DOE said the funding opportunity — which is slated for release in 2023 — represented the "largest investment in tidal and river current energy technologies in the United States." The DOE said it proposed "to develop a tidal or river current research, development, and demonstration site and to support in-water demonstration of at least one tidal energy system." Alejandro Moreno, who is acting assistant secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, said oceans and rivers represented "a huge potential source of renewable energy." "The U.S. tidal and river current energy industry requires long-term and substantial funding to move from testing devices one at a time to establishing a commercial site," it said.
SAN DIEGO — An 18-year-old Marine recruit died last month after collapsing during training at Southern California’s Camp Pendleton, military officials said in a weekend statement. Javier Pong “became unconscious and unresponsive” while “conducting scheduled training” on Sept. 27 at the base near San Diego, according to a Marine Corps statement Saturday. Gen. Jason Morris, the commanding general of Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, said the Marines are investigating Pong’s death. Javier Pong as he pursued his journey to become a United States Marine,” Morris said in the statement. The Marines did not immediately respond to the Union-Tribune’s questions about what type of training recruits were engaged in when Pong collapsed.
Many of the most destructive and potentially deadly impacts of a hurricane — including storm surge, flooding and rainfall — are not accounted for in a storm's category number. "Hurricane Ian is a very large, slow-moving hurricane. "There have been several alternative scales proposed over the years and none have gained enough attention or traction by the National Hurricane Center," Collins said. "It is important to have such evidence before even proposing to the National Hurricane Center that this should be considered as a replacement." Kantha said the National Hurricane Center acts conservatively and carefully with changes, particularly those with legal implications.
A well-oiled transportation system is vital to keeping the economy humming — especially in a country as large as the United States. Unfortunately, Americans' ability to get resources where they need to go has been crippled by a pair of outdated laws: the Jones Act and the Foreign Dredge Act. As with Jones Act ships, hopper dredges constructed in US shipyards are significantly more expensive than those built abroad. But despite these huge costs, the Jones Act and the Foreign Dredge Act survive largely intact. The Jones Act and the Foreign Dredge Act are just two examples among many, and behind each one lies an entrenched interest group dedicated to its preservation.
Blue whales, which are endangered, grow to be 80 feet long and can live for 80 years. "By ensuring these small changes, MSC is making a significant difference for these endangered whales. Tharaka Basnayaka/NurPhoto/Getty Images"Re-routeing is the key hope to turn the tide for blue whales off Sri Lanka. Blue whales are the largest living animals on earth. While hunting blue whales is prohibited, the species continues to be threatened, primarily due to declines in its primary food source, krill.
A Navy-trained bottlenose dolphin devoured eight venomous sea snakes one day, GoPro videos show. Dolphins have never been documented eating sea snakes, only playing with them. The attacks puzzled scientists, since consuming venomous snakes can be dangerous. Prior to this study, which was published in the journal PLOS ONE in August 2022, there was no documentation of dolphins eating sea snakes — only playing with them and releasing them. They searched for other fish that might look like a sea snake on camera, but they found no other explanation.
Stunning drone footage shows an orca carrying a great white shark in its mouth as blood pooled. A study published last month suggested orcas had driven great whites from South African waters. Suddenly, a third orca rises from the depths, carrying a 9-foot-long great white shark in its mouth. Great white sharks are considered apex predators, meaning they have no known predators; however, researchers have identified rare occurrences of them being preyed upon by orcas. The researchers noted carcasses of dead great whites had been washing ashore with their livers ripped out and, for some, without their hearts.

However, humans are a larger threat to sharks than sharks are to us. Sharks may be helpful for our environmentTiger sharks, one of Australia’s primary predators, may help ecosystems respond to extreme climate events. “It seems like it’s more than just tiger sharks,” Heithaus said. Some sharks, like mako sharks and bull sharks, give live birth, while other sharks, like cat sharks, lay eggs, said Jasmin Graham, president and CEO of Minorities in Shark Sciences, based in Bradenton, Florida. With this finely attuned sense, sharks hunt sick and weak animals, playing a crucial role in keeping the marine ecosystem healthy.

Redeeming credit card rewards for a stay in the Maldives can save you thousands of dollars. I'll no longer use points for Maldives resorts after an all-inclusive stay that was a much better value. As COVID-19 was sweeping the globe, speculative bookings to faraway places like the Maldives plummeted amid the uncertainty in future travel restrictions. In order to generate revenue, many hotels in the Maldives started offering great deals on fully refundable all-inclusive package deals. Here's how seven days at The Standard Huravalhi Maldives permanently changed my booking approach to one of my favorite destinations.

CNN —The second half of hurricane season is here and there have already been 17 named storms to keep hurricane hunters busy. But have you ever noticed hurricane hunters’ flight patterns shown by meteorologists on TV look like random, odd shapes? Hurricane hunters don’t fly away from these storms like commercial airlines do. There are two distinctive groups of hurricane hunters, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the US Air Force Reserve (USAF). Fixed missionsFixed missions are designated for systems that meet tropical cyclone qualifications, such as tropical depressions, tropical storms, and hurricanes.

Modern Marine Corps scout snipers are required to study their history, to learn from the outstanding snipers that came before them. In many conflicts throughout US history, Marine Corps snipers have proven to be valuable assets on the battlefield. Carlos N. Hathcock:Carlos Hathcock USMC ArchivesIn Vietnam, Hathcock had 93 confirmed enemy kills and several hundred unconfirmed. That never mattered to him though, according to Charles Henderson's book, "Marine Sniper: 93 Confirmed Kills." The only US military sniper with more confirmed kills than Mawhinney in Vietnam was Army sharpshooter Adelbert Waldron with 109 confirmed kills.
