Ukraine attacked Russian airfields with new ATACMS missile systems, a US-based think tank said. The weapons could push Russian aircraft away from the front, per the Institute for the Study of War. AdvertisementAdvertisementUkraine's strikes on "operationally significant" Russian airfields with its new US-made ATACMS will likely force Russia's military to pull some of its aircraft away from the front lines, according to the Institute for the Study of War. "The Ukrainian ATACMS strikes on operationally significant Russian airfields in Ukraine will likely prompt the Russian command to disperse aviation assets and withdraw some aircraft to airfields further from the frontline," it said. The arrival of ATACMS also poses a significant threat to Russian ammunition depots in rear areas, it added.

The Detroit Casino Council (DCC) called the first strike in its history after negotiations which began in the summer did not yield a new contract. On Sept. 29, 99% of voting workers from all unionized groups at the three Detroit casinos voted to authorize the DCC to call a strike if negotiations weren't progressing. The committee estimates the strike would risk $3.4 million in operator revenue per day, with the greatest impact to MGM Grand Detroit at $1.7 million per day. "We've made six proposals to the union and our current offer includes the single largest pay increase in the history of MGM Grand Detroit," the company said. Industry gaming revenues have surpassed pre-pandemic levels, with the Detroit casino industry generating $2.27 billion in 2022, according to the DCC negotiating committee.

A change in the way activist and private equity investors are viewed is underway, Corvex Management founder Keith Meister said Tuesday. Corporate raider is a term used to refer to aggressive activist investors. "The reason it hasn't happened more quickly is because the amazing large private equity funds have been victims of their own successes," Meister said. Activist investors, which include Trian's Nelson Peltz, can agitate for a wide variety of changes including selling off underperforming or undervalued businesses or replacing management teams. Private equity investors, meanwhile, usually build a controlling stake in a company, with the aim of taking it private and making it more valuable before selling it for a profit.

Jim Cramer sees a bull market in cybersecurity

Despite recent market weakness in several sectors, CNBC's Jim Cramer said he sees a bull market in cybersecurity. "You always want to buy the stocks of companies in industries where demand is most rabid," Cramer said. MGM , Caesars , Johnson Controls and Clorox have faced recent hacks. Clorox took a huge earnings hit due to processing delays and product outages, Cramer noted. To Cramer, cybersecurity companies such as Palo Alto Networks , CrowdStrike , Okta and Zscaler may be very valuable with businesses willing to pay high prices to protect against hackers.

Casino stocks are slumping – and that could be bad news for the US economy. Top investor Jim Chanos has touted the Las Vegas strip as a potential economic indicator in the past. Casino stocks' losses have likely been driven by Wall Street taking a gloomier view on the economy, according to analysts. Las Vegas' next big test will be the third-quarter earnings season, with most casino operators expected to announce their results over the next month. It all kind of started Wednesday of last week when Johnson Controls revealed it had been hit by a cyberattack. But why is this specific cybersecurity incident of particular interest? That agency is reportedly investigating if any floor plans and security information were exposed as a result of the attack. The culprit was a significant cybersecurity breach from August — "which caused wide-scale disruption of Clorox's operations, including order processing delays and significant product outages." Clorox is now expecting a hefty year-over-year sales decline as well as a quarterly loss thanks to the incident.

NEW YORK (AP) — The cybersecurity attack at MGM Resorts last month is expected to cost the casino giant more than $100 million, the Las Vegas-based company said in a Thursday regulatory filing. MGM wasn't the only casino giant to see a cybersecurity breach last month. The Reno-based company said that its casino and online operations were not disrupted. Beyond the casino world, Clorox also disclosed a cybersecurity attack recently — noting the company identified “unauthorized activity” on some of IT systems back in August. ________________AP Reporters Ken Ritter and Rio Yamat in Las Vegas contributed to this report.
