Japan's newest strategic review names China, North Korea and Russia as threats to Japanese security. Clearer explanations of the threats to Japan's national security will prove critical as the government seeks public support for an ambitious defense spending plan." The review is part of a reconsideration of Japan's needs in the face of growing threats from its well-armed neighbors, especially China. China has "conducted joint bomber flights and naval navigations with Russia in the vicinity of Japan," the paper said. AdvertisementBesides external threats and new equipment, the paper highlighted a critical need for the Japan Self-Defense Forces: more people.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the independent presidential candidate, confessed on Sunday that he had left a dead bear cub in Central Park in Manhattan in 2014 because he thought it would be “amusing.”Mr. Kennedy posted a video detailing the bizarre story on social media apparently ahead of an article in The New Yorker. In the video, Mr. Kennedy appears to be seated in a kitchen as he casually tells the actress Roseanne Barr about the ordeal. He says that he was driving through the Hudson Valley when he saw a woman in a van hit and kill a young bear. “I pulled over and I picked up the bear and put him in the back of my van because I was going to skin the bear,” he says. “It was very good condition and I was going to put the meat in my refrigerator.”

Clermont County Common Pleas Judge Richard Ferenc sentenced Chad Doerman, 33, to three life terms without the possibility of parole for the killings of Clayton, 7; Hunter, 4; and Chase, 3. Chad Doerman followed him and repeatedly fired, striking the boy, Tukelve said. Laura Doerman’s daughter, then 14, had seen Hunter’s killing and followed Clayton and Chad Doerman from the house. After the boy ran to his mother, there was a struggle over the gun and Laura Doerman pressed her finger into the barrel. “Ultimately she had to drop Chase.”When she did, Tukelve said, Chad Doerman shot the boy once in the head, killing him.

“That was a sign to ‘Murdoch watchers’ that something was up,” said Jim Rutenberg, a New York Times reporter who broke the news about Mr. Murdoch’s engagement. Mr. Rutenberg, who writes about politics and culture, has long reported on the Murdoch family. In 2019, he and Jonathan Mahler wrote an exhaustive article for The Times Magazine about the Murdochs’ sprawling media empire and its global influence. “That, for better or worse, sort of cemented us as the experts on this family,” said Mr. Mahler, who covers various topics for the magazine, including politics and entertainment. The outcome will determine who will have control of the empire after Mr. Murdoch’s death.

Chinese researchers envision the solution as flotillas of mass-produced laser subs that could be dispatched to oceans around the world. They would wait for tracking data from other non-submarine platforms to determine when a target satellite is overhead. In addition to destroying satellites, these subs could also blast aircraft or land targets such as radars and oil refineries. Laser subs could also shield China's ballistic missile submarines from detection.

Trenton, New Jersey AP —New Jersey’s ban on the AR-15 rifle is unconstitutional, but the state’s cap on magazines over 10 rounds passes constitutional muster, a federal judge said Tuesday. “Bans on so-called ‘assault weapons’ are immoral and unconstitutional. He added: “We look forward to pressing our arguments on appeal.”Several challenges to state assault weapons bans have cited the Bruen decision. A gun rights group has challenged Connecticut’s landmark 2013 gun control law, passed after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, that bans assault weapons, including certain AR-15-style rifles and large capacity magazines. The state’s assault weapons ban dates to 1990 and includes various other weapons, but Sheridan focused on the Colt AR-15, citing the plaintiffs’ concentration on that weapon in their court filings, and the law specifying that make of the rifle.

That's not realistic and, in my experience, typically means their parents still have to support them. Had my parents supported me through this, I wouldn't have become self-sufficient as quickly, and it wouldn't have set a great boundary. AdvertisementSeveral cities have been trying to take advantage of the new policy, including Dubai, Milan, and more. A recently relocated hedge fund manager in Milan is planning to visit London or New York six or seven times a year going forward. "The best type of knowledge comes from people, from frequent interaction with people," said a Milan-based hedge fund manager. Several people — based in spots such as Dubai, Milan, and Zurich — mentioned that people early in their careers should still prioritize working in the biggest cities though. Moving to the Middle East just to interact with fellow UK ex-pats doesn't add much diversification to a portfolio manager's life.

Alma Powell, an advocate for children, literacy and military families who was the quiet force alongside her husband, Colin L. Powell, the revered military commander, secretary of state and national security adviser, and who played a crucial role in his decision not to seek the presidency in 1996, died on Sunday in Alexandria, Va. She was 86. Her son, Michael, confirmed the death, in a hospital, but did not specify a cause. When he retired as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in September 1993, more than two years after the end of the Gulf War, Mr. Powell, who died in 2021, was by all measures the country’s most popular political figure. A military hero and commander beloved by both Democrats and Republicans, he was often called the Black Eisenhower. As Washingtonian magazine once noted, Mr. Powell had “virtually no known enemies — in a town where everyone of consequence is disliked by someone else of consequence.”Ms. Powell was the consummate military wife, an exemplar of resilience and discipline — Mr. Powell had served two tours in Vietnam at the start of their marriage — whose elegance and experience bolstered her husband’s mystique.

Why Americans are snubbing McDonald’s and Starbucks

New York CNN —On the surface, it looks like Americans are laying off the Big Macs, booze and even — gasp! On Monday, McDonald’s reported sales fell 0.7% in the US from the same period in 2023. The once reliably cheap McDonald’s pushed its prices up, while sit-down restaurants leaned into value and convenience. Applebee’s, for one, made a direct pitch to the hordes of ticked-off McDonald’s customers who felt the chain had abused its pricing power. Now, McDonald’s is trying to win back poorer customers while appealing to more affluent customers who want something new.

Perplexity AI on Tuesday debuted a revenue-sharing model for publishers after more than a month of plagiarism accusations. Media outlets and content platforms including Fortune, Time, Entrepreneur, The Texas Tribune, Der Spiegel and WordPress.com are the first to join the company's "Publishers Program." Under the new partner program, any time a user asks a question and Perplexity generates advertising revenue from citing one of the publisher's articles in its answer, Perplexity will share a flat percentage of that revenue. "Some of it grew out of conversations we were having with publishers about integrating Perplexity APIs and technology into their products," Shevelenko said. Newfound fossils of the extinct arthropod Odaraia alata recently provided scientists with a first glimpse of Odaraia’s jawlike structures, called mandibles. He conducted the research at the Royal Ontario Museum while pursuing a doctoral degree in the University of Toronto’s department of ecology and evolutionary biology. For the new investigation, the researchers examined around 150 fossils collected by Royal Ontario Museum during expeditions between 1975 and 2000. The carapace folded over Odaraia’s limbs, so it may have been unable to walk on the seafloor, according to the Royal Ontario Museum.
