CNN —Japanese players and fans were left in tears after the country claimed its first ever victory against European opponents in the FIBA Basketball World Cup on Sunday. Hong Kong CNN —NBA star James Harden expressed disbelief after Chinese fans snapped up 10,000 bottles of his own-branded wine in seconds, demonstrating the massive reach of livestreaming in the country, where basketball is loved by millions. “How many bottles do you usually sell in a day … from one store?” Yang asked Harden, who replied: “A few cases.”Yang then told the star to watch how quickly they could sell them. Go!” Yang told viewers. Basketball is enormously popular in China, in no small part thanks to Chinese legend Yao Ming’s Hall of Fame NBA career. That popularity among hundreds of millions of Chinese fans translates to lucrative sponsorship deals for the league and its star players.

CNN —With some of the world’s leading soccer players being tempted by the money on offer from Saudi Arabian soccer clubs, the Saudi Pro League’s (SPL) new Director of Football, Michael Emenalo, says the Gulf state is “disrupting the industry, but we are disrupting to enhance. We’re adding value to the industry.”The Saudi Pro League consists of 18 clubs, four of which are 75% owned by the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) – one of the world’s top 10 sovereign wealth funds. Cristiano Ronaldo, N’golo Kanté, Riyad Mahrez and current Ballon d’Or holder Karim Benzema are just a few of players who have joined a variety of SPL clubs over the last few months. That’s true, but there is also a sensible, logical, thoughtful process to making the league better,” said the SPL’s new Director of Football. Sophie Ralph/APLinda Caicedo signed for Real Madrid earlier this year and was already highly regarded before the Women's World Cup got underway. Caicedo scored twice and inspired Colombia to two victories in the group stage, including a famous win against two-time world champion Germany. It was a magical passage of play that underlined her potential to become one of the finest players in the women’s game. Born in Candelaria in the west of Colombia, Caicedo attributes her exciting, slightly unorthodox style to playing street soccer as a child. A key player for Colombia at this year's World Cup, Caicedo will be looking to be at her mesmerizing best against Jamaica to secure a spot in the quarterfinals.

Since men were responsible for colonizing, I guess it’s only right that women are showing how to decolonize football at their World Cup. To that point, this World Cup has also showcased the magnificent talents of Haiti and Jamaica’s Reggae Girlz, the latter making it to the competition in part by raising money via a crowdfunder appeal. More than any other time in the history of the women’s game, this World Cup is showcasing why real and meaningful representation matters. Her stature is a huge win for Muslim women and girls who have never seen themselves represented in this way on football’s global stage. Still, the French state is forcing Muslim women to remove the hijab if they want to play the game they love.

CNN —World Cup tournaments tend to be defined by an emerging star and, this year, it’s Colombia’s 18-year-old sensation Linda Caicedo who is shining brightest. It was in that game, early in the second half, that she produced one of the moments of the World Cup so far. “I wanted to shoot and thank God the ball went in,” Caicedo told FIFA after the game. “I’m still developing,” Caicedo told FIFA+ before the World Cup began. Now, sparing an unlikely swing of goal difference, Colombia will qualify for the last 16 of the World Cup.

has changed its personal conduct policy, expanding the offenses that warrant more serious penalties to include sexual assault “involving threats or coercion” and including “a pattern of conduct” and “offenses that involve planning” as factors that could increase punishment. These changes come one year after a disciplinary officer cited limitations of the league’s policy in issuing initial discipline to Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson, who was accused of sexual misconduct and harassment by more than two dozen women. Watson, 27, denied the accusations. He was not charged criminally and has settled 23 of the 26 lawsuits filed against him; one was withdrawn (“in light of privacy and security concerns,” according to a court filing) and two others are still active. They spoke under condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to comment publicly.

Over the weekend, one of the Saudi Professional League’s more prominent teams, Al Hilal, submitted an offer worth $332 million for the France striker to his current team, Paris St.-Germain. Should the deal go through, it would make Mbappé the most expensive player in the sport’s history by some distance, dwarfing the $263 million P.S.G. On the other side of the world in Auckland, the USWNT took down World Cup newcomer Vietnam 3-0. It was nonsense to worry about what to watch or whether Messi would upstage the women. MLS chief Don Garber, for one, says he’s not worried about the impact Saudi money could have on the ability of the MLS to expand into markets outside the US, especially as it failed to win Messi. Friday may have been the first time in his life that Messi was someone else’s opening act. The USWNT did what was expected, beating a lesser team in Vietnam, but they also have a lot of work in front of them.

CNN —Fans turned out in their droves to watch Lionel Messi’s official unveiling as an Inter Miami player. When Pizarro signed for Inter, he filled one of the club’s three ‘Designated Player’ spots. The rule is also known as the ‘Beckham Rule’ after David Beckham – now Inter’s co-owner – became the first designated player when he joined LA Galaxy in 2007. So, with Messi signing a contract reportedly worth between $50 to $60 million per year, the 35-year-old Argentine fills one of Inter’s designated player spots. Either Inter can look to move one of their designated players on or they can “buy down” a player’s contract.

Those Hall of Famers — like Stan Musial, Derek Jeter and so many other greats — had something in common: Except for the All-Star Game, they never changed teams. That singular identity gives their stars extra glimmer, but largely removes them from a new game sweeping the baseball landscape. The name is Immaculate Grid, and with apologies to the surging Atlanta Braves — who had eight selections for the National League’s team in Tuesday’s All-Star Game in Seattle — it’s the hottest thing going in the sport. The grid — named for the immaculate inning, in which a pitcher strikes out the side on nine pitches — is a daily quiz in the form of a tic-tac-toe board designed by Brian Minter, a software developer in suburban Atlanta. He said the game averages about 200,000 players every weekday.

CNN —Following an investigation, Major League Baseball (MLB) announced the suspension of New York Yankees pitcher Jimmy Cordero for the remainder of the 2023 season, including any postseason games, for violating the league’s Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy. MLB said Cordero accepted the suspension and the immediate placement on the league’s restricted list. “There is no justification for domestic violence, and we stand with the objectives, standards and enforcement of MLB’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy,” a team statement read Wednesday. The right handed reliever has appeared in 31 games for the Yankees this season. MLB said Cordero will “participate in a confidential and comprehensive evaluation and treatment program” supervised by the MLB and MLBPA approved Joint Policy Board.

It was opening day of Grenada Built to Win, the summer basketball league at Edenwald Houses in the Bronx, and there was little space to move. CNN —Argentine soccer superstar Lionel Messi is to earn between $50 and $60 million per year when he joins Inter Miami, the club’s part-owner Jorge Mas told Spanish publication El Pais in an interview. The lower of those figures would make Messi the highest-paid player in Major League Soccer (MLS) by over $40 million, according to sports salary tracker Spotrac. According to that site, Xherdan Shaqiri currently earns the most in the league with an annual wage of $8,153,000. Mas named Jordi Alba and Luis Suarez as players the team had talked to, as well as Messi’s compatriot Angel Di Maria, most recently of Juventus. I’m beginning to feel pretty isolated in a workplace I used to feel was quite congenial. Salaries aren’t high, but we get a 2-to-1 match on our retirement plan contributions, which is significant. HR blames the company that administers our retirement plan and says it is working on a fix. Unless they chase that payment, your former colleagues will never see that money, which I’m sure the organization knows. You have to calibrate how upset you get about this and how much you escalate the issue, with how much you care.

on Thursday announced that three players had been found to have bet on football, the penalties came down with characteristic harshness: indefinite suspensions which can only be appealed after a full season. It was the second such set of gambling penalties levied this off-season, after the league in April invoked the same suspension against three players who had bet on N.F.L. The suspensions, punitive by nature, were also a warning to other pros tempted by the pervasive opportunities to bet on football. But, critics say, the harsh punishment is dissonant with the league’s business partnerships with betting companies, which brought the league more than $1 billion in 2022. suspended Isaiah Rodgers and Rashod Berry of the Indianapolis Colts and free agent Demetrius Taylor through at least the 2023 season for betting on N.F.L.

The three players, who all bet on National Football League games during the 2022 season, may petition for reinstatement after the 2023 campaign, the league said in a statement. Shortly after the NFL announced the suspensions, the Colts waived defensive end Berry and cornerback Rodgers. "We have made the following roster moves as a consequence of the determination that these players violated the league’s gambling policy," said Colts General Manager Chris Ballard. "We will continue to emphasize to our players the importance of understanding and adhering to league rules and policies." Berry broke into the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2020 and played eight games over parts of two seasons.
