CNN —Apple Original Films has unveiled details of Oscar winner Brad Pitt’s eagerly awaited Formula 1 feature film, as crews begin filming scenes with the actor at Silverstone, where Sunday’s British Grand Prix is being staged. The movie is being made in collaboration with F1, and stars Pitt as a former driver returning to the sport with fictional team APXGP, alongside “Snowfall” actor Damson Idris as his teammate. And what better place to film such a feature than Silverstone, famously the first circuit to ever host an F1 race in 1950. The fictional team will even have its own pit-stop at the track, and filming is due to take place amid this weekend’s British Grand Prix. What’s Lost When Censors Tamper With Classic Films

This particular change to “The French Connection” came unexplained and unannounced, so we can only guess at the precise reasoning behind it. We see a bit of banter between two policemen working in what was then called the “inner city,” dialogue underlining their “good cop, bad cop” dynamic; in certain ways, it’s not so different from the set pieces you would find in Blaxploitation films of the era. He is one in a long line of characters that would stretch forward into shows like “The Shield” and “The Wire”: figures built on the idea that “good cop, bad cop” can describe not just an interrogation style or a buddy-film formula but also a single officer. The one newly smuggled into “The French Connection” reveals, to use a period term, the hand of the Man, even if it’s unclear from which direction it’s reaching. Censors, like overzealous cops, can be too aggressive, or too simplistic, in their attempts to neutralize perceived threats.

I speak as one of 25 TCM viewers chosen in a national contest to be a guest programmer on TCM for its 25th anniversary in 2019. Each of us was asked to introduce a film that meant something highly personal to us and to dedicate it to someone special in our lives. She sensed in that serendipitous moment that her father was still with her, and it sustained her. I chose the 1958 Oscar-winning musical “Gigi” and dedicated it to my wife. His gift was tickets to a performance of the show.

CNN —The state of California is about to give movie and TV studios a new lucrative tax perk. The new, refundable tax credits come as competition for film and TV production from other states and countries is on the rise. In a 2020 SEC filing, Netflix said it had $250 million in California R&D tax credits — far more than it could use. In addition to refundable tax credits and stricter safety standards, the bill establishes specific diversity requirements. The bill also adds a new member to the state’s film commission with diversity, equity, and inclusion expertise.

Jennifer Lawrence and Andrew Barth Feldman Photo: Columbia PicturesThere’s a solid comic foundation underneath “No Hard Feelings,” and it isn’t the labored series of bawdy jokes centered on the film’s star, Jennifer Lawrence , which form the movie’s marketing strategy. A woman made of fire falls for a man made of water. The filmmakers behind the new Disney/Pixar movie “Elemental” knew the story they wanted to tell. They encountered plenty of challenges and took a few wrong turns as they worked on this romance-adventure that anthropomorphizes earth, air, fire and water. “Like these families of copper living next to helium, but don’t trust them because they’re gassy,” he said. Below is a closer look at what went into developing the visual style for each element.

‘The Blackening’ Review: Race Against a Killer
  + stars: | 2023-06-15 | by ( Lisa Kennedy | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
There are two games at play in “The Blackening,” a comedic horror film with more jokes than jump scares. The first is the titular race-baiting board game with the grotesque Jim Crow-style figurine that Morgan (Yvonne Orji) and her boyfriend, Shawn (Jay Pharoah), discover as they explore the cabin they have rented for a reunion of college friends. It tests our familiarity with horror tropes while messing with the variegated verities of Black identity. The film’s marketing come-on, “We Can’t All Die First,” winks at the notion that when there is a Black person in a predominantly white horror film, he or she is sure to be the first lamb (Black sheep?) Looking like a charred version of the Creature From the Black Lagoon and wielding the whitest weapon on earth — a crossbow — the movie’s masked killer has an answer for that.

CNN —The armorer on the set of the movie “Rust” likely was hungover when she loaded a prop gun used by actor Alec Baldwin that fired a live round of ammunition during a rehearsal, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, prosecutors said in a court filing. Witnesses told investigators Hannah Gutierrez Reed “was drinking heavily and smoking marijuana in the evenings during the shooting of Rust,” prosecutors said in the Friday filing. Gutierrez Reed will plead not guilty to two counts of involuntary manslaughter in connection with the October 2021 shooting, an attorney for her has said. A final decision on charges against Baldwin would be made before August 8, prosecutors said in the Friday filing. Through their respective attorneys, both Gutierrez Reed and Halls accused Baldwin of deflecting blame onto others.

The Flash gets stuck in the past with Supergirl portrayed by Sasha Calle and Batman played by the original cinematic Batman, Michael Keaton. 'Jurassic Park' still has bite at 30, and here's why

“Transformers: Rise of the Beasts,” a goofy seventh installment that rattles along well enough until the wheels fall off, ballyhoos an evolution: a biomechanical gorilla who calls himself Optimus Primal. In fairness, these metaphysical questions were explored in the futuristic and bizarrely engaging ’90s cartoon “Beast Wars: Transformers” and its spinoff “Beast Machines: Transformers,” which felt like sipping on a spiked juice box in an ashram. When that Optimus Primal was asked if he was robot or animal, he mystically intoned, “Both … and neither. Only then can you truly say, ‘I am transformed.’”But also in fairness, those shows and this movie share zero DNA. “I don’t get ‘Beast Wars,’” Lorenzo di Bonaventura, one of this film’s producers, once said.

“Afire” was not the film that Mr. Petzold set out to make. After presenting his 2020 film “Undine” in Paris, Mr. Petzold and Paula Beer, the film’s lead (she also stars in “Afire”) came down with Covid-19. While convalescing in Berlin, he binge-watched films by the French New Wave director Éric Rohmer and read stories by Anton Chekhov. In that first pandemic spring, Mr. Petzold’s thoughts turned to summer and to summer films, a genre that, according to him, has not properly existed in Germany since “People on Sunday” (1930). “And then I thought about the aftermath, National Socialism, which destroyed everything: the German summers, the German youth, the German bodies, the poetry.

Despite the controversy, the movie was among the most successful films ever to debut on Memorial Day, Box Office Mojo reported. Last year’s “Top Gun Maverick” tops that list with $160 million at the US box office over the long holiday weekend. That came in a hair lower than “The Little Mermaid” with an opening weekend haul of $116.8 million. The comments came a month after prosecutors dropped a criminal charge against Baldwin over Hutchins' death in 2021, citing new evidence. Prosecutors said additional testing was required to see if the hammer was modified, the source of the modification and what impact it might have on the firearm's performance. Ammunition found on the set was requested for testing for manner of assembly and origin of manufacture, prosecutors said. Prosecutors have yet to reveal how live rounds got onto the set of the low-budget movie production. "Rust" weapons handler Hannah Gutierrez-Reed is the only person still facing charges over Hutchins' death.
What Billy understands, and what the movie so beautifully expresses, is that streetball is about more than merely who is the most accomplished player. When Billy drains a three-pointer in a shootout, Sidney nonetheless derides his style: “No aesthetic beauty whatsoever,” he jeers. Or as one of Sidney’s friend puts it, after Sidney’s more elegant three in reply: “A thing of beauty is a joy forever. Only “White Men Can’t Jump” has captured the power of talking smack. “You’d rather look good and lose,” he tells him, “than look bad and win.” It’s an apt diagnosis, but it cuts both ways.
